Love it! A George Pan Cosmatos joint, with Robocop!

This was actually quite intense and frightening as a kiddo. Rewatched myself not long ago, and as an adult I would go along with your ‘insane’ summary.

Heh. What always cracks me up about this shot is that for how much the actors go on about their amazement that Sigourney sank it for real in a low amount of takes, there’s nothing about the shot design that sells this fact/couldn’t have easily just been an fx or tricked shot - ball leaves frame completely. What would have been really cool is if the director had had faith she was able to do it and told the camera operator to pan up as she throws, or just framed it so the ball was always in shot. Love Perlman’s reaction though either way!

This is the version that was released direct from Clive a few years ago in super limited bluray.

There was a fan edit that was being worked on called the Ultimate Cabal Cut that was never finished and is just over 3 hours long. I think a version of that is out there but it's not official and I have no ideas what liberties were taken with it.

I have found a fan edit called Integral cut which is supposedly the longest version out there. I'm going to download and let you know what I find.

Cheers - @static pointed me towards The Ultimate Cabal Cut, 3hrs 19min! I have it queued up for later this evening :) Amazingly it seems that this composite has been created out of mostly good source materials (bluray, dvd) and only includes about a minute of inferior ‘vhs production footage’ that isn’t available at this point from a better source.

Thanks for the link, didn't even think of looking on archive

The Ultimate Cut I've read is not necessarily well edited but just composite of every available footage that was found. I will be downloading it and hopefully checking it out myself this week. I do rather enjoy Barkers DC cut and that's my go to when I'm in the mood for Nightbreed.

The Integral Cut I downloaded I think was the "longest" cut prior to the Cabal cut coming out from Clive. It's just over 2 hours long

Yep, I realise that even the original Cabal Cut is a pretty unnecessary kitchen sink mashup but I've always been curious! The Ultimate Cabal is reported to have added a further 20mins of production footage (rushes? all taken from a VHS tape found in the production office) than the original Cabal Cut so I do really anticipate some loopy transitions (characters dying twice in different shots etc).

Well this poking around looking for different cuts of Nightbreed yesterday led me to finding a fan edit of Kill Bill where they assembled an approximation of The Whole Bloody Affair using the Japanese cut of Vol. 1 and some deleted scenes for Vol. 2. I am going to check that out soon too.

Shaolin Soccer dir by Stephen Chow

Well my wife saw a gif online of this and asked me what the hell it was since she thought it looked funny. I proceeded to ask had she not seen or heard of Shaolin Soccer? She had not, which wasn't entirely surprising since she didn't know Kung Fu Hustle either. I found the HK version which I had never seen before, I only had seen the Miramax edited & dubbed version back in the theaters. So it was a "new" viewing for me and her. It's still a blast and very entertaining. Stephen Chow's comedies are always worth your time.

Kite dir by Yasuomi Umetsu
Mezzo Forte dir by Yasuomi Umetsu

I'll be talking about these together as I did a double feature of them and are both very similar. Kite for those that are unfamiliar is one of those highly discussed 90's anime OVA and for two very particular reasons. Violence & graphic uncensored anime sex. The basic set up is the main character Sawa is an orphan who is taken in by a detective after her parents are brutally murdered and she is forced to kill an alleged rapist. After this she becomes an assassin for this detective who also likes fuck the teenage girl he "took in" in scenes that are very clearly non consensual. The sex is quite graphic and uncomfortable, it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't make them so rapey. Outside of the sex scenes the actual anime is quite good with really great action scenes, Sawa has a gun that has delayed exploding bullets, so they enter a body like a regular bullet would then proceed to explode. It makes for some really cool scenes. Overall I really enjoyed this, I've avoided it for 2 decades due to the rape scenes in it but finally decided to give it a go and I understand why it was so praised. There is a censored version out there as well if any one is interested in watching but wants to forego the rape scenes.

Mezzo Forte is kind of the same setup but a little different. We are yet again presented with an assassin female protag who works with two older guys, this time around these guys are not scummy/rapey dirt bags, they are all on the same team and help each other out. Lots of really great action scenes and yet again graphic sex scenes, one is a dream the main character has with her partners, it's odd and seems to only be here because they knew having these types of scenes in here would help sell it? Then there's a rape scene in the second part that is kind of hand waved away later by saying *spoiler* it was actually a sex robot we swapped out just in time. Again this is actually really good OVA with lots of great action and an interesting story. Also available in censored form if you don't want to watch it with it there.

These are definitely products of their time and I don't think they would necessarily fly these days like they did when they released. I will just warn for those that may want to watch it, when I say graphic sex scene I mean fully animated everything including the finished product ;) it's not just nudity and moaning.

Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 dir by Jeff Burr

Boy oh boy was this exactly what I expected it to be. It is so specifically an early 90's low budget horror. I didn't particularly care for it but it has a few moments of entertainment. Very young Vigo was surprising to see. Stuff just kind of happens here for no rhyme or reason and the night scenes are very dark which makes it difficult to see what's happening. Definitely not something I'll revisit any time soon. Should I do Next Generation next? I haven't seen that since the late 90's
