Candyman Dir by Nia DaCosta
This one seems to be a bit mixed from horror fans, I personally fall on the side of loving it. It has some flaws but nothing that really bothered me all that much. It's beautifully shot, acting is pretty great, effects are gory and the score is really damn good. So good I may have to spend the $45 to get a copy from Waxworks. I enjoyed the callbacks and tie in's, I thought the new story was interesting while still keeping in theme with the original. Just a really good "sequel/reboot" of the series imo.
School On Fire Dir by Ringo Lam
My expectations of this film were way off. I've seen praise for the film over the years but never really looked into it. I know Lam is known for his action films and after watching Full Contact last week I was excited to check this one out. I found a fan reconstruction that put the cut footage from VHS back into the film, it's only a few scenes of extra violence that didn't seem to be necessary except the final death of the film which was grisly and very important to keep in place so I'm glad I watched this version. The film itself is not an action film, there are some action scenes in it but they are very "real" and not very stagey but it's a drama first and foremost. A very depressing drama. I watched this saturday evening after having to go be social for a few hours, I got home smoked and put on what I thought was going to be a action film. What I watched was a sad tale of misled youth getting entangled in gang related shit and the destructive force it has on family, friends and your community. It's actually a really good film but it took the wind out of my sails and brought me down for the evening. Watch it, it's recommended but just be aware of what it is.
I started watching a show called
Evil as I've been recommended it by a few people, I'm about 3/4 of the way through season one and I'm enjoying it for what it is but it's nothing special. It's like a modern procedural with an x-files/exorcist style stamped onto it. It makes for some entertaining moments while being super generic at other times. The techno babble is also hilarious, it's like one person in the writing room read about something for 10 minutes then wrote about it the next day remembering bits and pieces.
I have also watched the first 3 episodes of
Midnight Mass, Flanni's new show. It's way better than Hill House imo but boy oh boy is he pushing the "slow burn" plotting to an extreme. I'm curious to see where it's going. It's beautifully shot and the location it takes place makes for some stellar imagery. He's still terrible with song choices, some directors can pull it off (Marty) but others just seem like they are trying too fucking hard.
