Candyman Dir by Nia DaCosta
This one seems to be a bit mixed from horror fans, I personally fall on the side of loving it. It has some flaws but nothing that really bothered me all that much. It's beautifully shot, acting is pretty great, effects are gory and the score is really damn good. So good I may have to spend the $45 to get a copy from Waxworks. I enjoyed the callbacks and tie in's, I thought the new story was interesting while still keeping in theme with the original. Just a really good "sequel/reboot" of the series imo.

School On Fire Dir by Ringo Lam
My expectations of this film were way off. I've seen praise for the film over the years but never really looked into it. I know Lam is known for his action films and after watching Full Contact last week I was excited to check this one out. I found a fan reconstruction that put the cut footage from VHS back into the film, it's only a few scenes of extra violence that didn't seem to be necessary except the final death of the film which was grisly and very important to keep in place so I'm glad I watched this version. The film itself is not an action film, there are some action scenes in it but they are very "real" and not very stagey but it's a drama first and foremost. A very depressing drama. I watched this saturday evening after having to go be social for a few hours, I got home smoked and put on what I thought was going to be a action film. What I watched was a sad tale of misled youth getting entangled in gang related shit and the destructive force it has on family, friends and your community. It's actually a really good film but it took the wind out of my sails and brought me down for the evening. Watch it, it's recommended but just be aware of what it is.

I started watching a show called Evil as I've been recommended it by a few people, I'm about 3/4 of the way through season one and I'm enjoying it for what it is but it's nothing special. It's like a modern procedural with an x-files/exorcist style stamped onto it. It makes for some entertaining moments while being super generic at other times. The techno babble is also hilarious, it's like one person in the writing room read about something for 10 minutes then wrote about it the next day remembering bits and pieces.

I have also watched the first 3 episodes of Midnight Mass, Flanni's new show. It's way better than Hill House imo but boy oh boy is he pushing the "slow burn" plotting to an extreme. I'm curious to see where it's going. It's beautifully shot and the location it takes place makes for some stellar imagery. He's still terrible with song choices, some directors can pull it off (Marty) but others just seem like they are trying too fucking hard.

@Inksb: Excellent write up(s) on your recently seens! I‘ll soon check out Candyman and see what I make of it - from what I‘ve read so far I don‘t think I‘ll be disappointed. Score is fantastic.

I remember School on Fire but it‘s a long time ago I saw it. Yes, not what you would expect from Ringo Lam. Have you seen All About Ah-Long? That one really stuck with me. Early Johnnie To with Chow Yun-fat - again, not an action film but a HK drama done right.

I have not seen All About Ah-Long, I will add it to my list. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Lamberto Bava's 1986 Morirai a mezzanotte a.k.a. Midnight Killer
terrific score by Claudio Simonetti

This was actually very enjoyable for an 80's giallo. Not great but for some reason I liked it more than expected.

Fantastic title track! It is one the Demons soundtrack but I am not sure if it was actually used in Demons... It has to be, no?

Ferdinando Merighi's 1972 Casa d'appuntamento a.k. The French Sex Murders
score by Bruno Nicolai

Took me half the movie to get into it... not the best giallo but Rosalba Neri and Barbara Bouchet together cannot make it a bad movie. And I am sure this Bruno Nicolai score was used in another movie but I cannot remember which one.

edit - cues from Jess Franco's Nightmares Come at Night (1970) and The Case of the Scorpion's Tail (1971) and All the Colors of the Dark (1972) were used... I feel so stupid that I cannot name the titles when hearing the cues in another movie...

Demofilo Fidani's 1972 A.A.A. massagiatrice bella presenza offresi… a.k.a. A.A.A. Masseuse, Good-Looking, Offers Her Services
score by Lalo Gori

This was not a great movie but I liked it a lot. It felt like a soap opera. Perfect for this rainy early morning.

Shatner’s delivery of “excuse me” in the finale is…

I’d say enjoy but this is a tough one. Weirdly enough it was my favorite when I was a kid.

There he goes, brave man. Sadly, we will likely never see @Bez again. I really enjoyed his interactions and posts here. TFF claims another victim.

haha...
It was not all bad... but a lot was.
In the beginning I was wondering which bad Italian post-apocalypse flick I put on.
I actually made a sound when they encountered 'god' and all the faces were shown... I was thinking that they could not have been serious.
After it finished I read about all the production stuff and initial story idea from Shatner.
Score was not bad though... Unfortunately not released in Japan so I can't extend my Star Trek obi collection.

i do like the camping scenes a lot actually, the three of them are so comfortable in their interactions at this point in their lives as both actors and characters that it seems so natural and kind of comforting.

and don't get me wrong, i go through all these movies like one a year and i still watch TFF every time.

don't worry Bez, the next one is a huge improvement and IMO one of the best.

These early Cronenberg films are some of my favorite. The melancholy tone is so cold-blooded

Agreed @evan I love those early Cronenberg movies. I probably saw Rabid way too young for my own good but it definitely stuck with me. A movie I still haven’t seen that I should really remedy is the Brood.
