So this is a symphonic version of the OST to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
The proto ghibli 'Mayazaki' movie was a big deal in Japanese Cinemas at the time, and the movies success enabled studio Ghibli to exist.

Four albums came out connected to the film, on Cassette aswell as LP, all written and performed by Joe Hisaishi.
The OST.
An all synth 'Image' album based on the score.
A Drama LP (apparently containing the whole audio track to the movie, fx and score included).
And, this LP which is a full orchestral reworking of the score.

I thought this album would be my least liked of them all but it has ended up being my favourite. I think if Milan or some other label could rerelease some of this Hisaishi music it would be no bad thing.

Seems a few copies made it out, though only ever had one copy pop up via Discogs notifications, and that was priced at £100+

I'm glad OWS is releasing a couple of those Popol Vuh re-issue. I only had Waxwork's Nosferatu and after being blow away by it, I stumbled upon (in a record fair) a french compilation called "Discover Cosmic", which combines two releases into one ("Hosianna Mantra" and "Einsjager & Seibenjager". I thought I had to track down more from them, and then OWS and Wah Wah started repressing some titles. Really good timing. I plan on picking all of them up.

The second release is a soundtrack by the Tindersticks. I really loved the soundtrack to "Red Riding : In the Year of our lord 1990" by Dickon Hinchliffe, and he was part of the Tindersticks for a moment, so I took a chance and bought this new release at my local record store. Blind buy. Here's a description from the bandcamp page :

This meditative, immersive film is a tribute to the astonishing work and achievements of naturalist, inventor and pioneering filmmaker F. Percy Smith, who worked in the early years of the 20th century, developing various cinematographic and micro-photographic techniques to capture nature's secrets in action.

‘Minute Bodies’ is an interpretative edit that combines Smith's original footage with a new contemporary score to create a hypnotic, alien yet familiar dreamscape that connects us to the sense of wonder Smith must have felt as he peered through his own lenses and seen these micro-worlds for the first time.

The forming of the edit and its musical score evolved over a three year period.The music was created from a loose collective of invited musicians . With tindersticks at its heart it also greatly benefits from the involvement of Thomas Belhom (percussion) and Christine Ott (Ondes Martenot and piano). There are also cameos from David Coulter (Musical saw and Nose flute) and Julian Siegel (Saxophone). It was recorded and mixed at the bands studio in France.

Today's mail brought me Waxwork's latest. Great packaging artwork, truly fantastic. The music itself is less eclectic than my other Pino Donaggio scores. it's mood is a little bit more set, it feels to me like a mix of melodrama and a tense horror thriller. I have to watch the movie. I know Criterion has released it recently.

after spinning Don't look now, now spinning the Beast in Space. that one is a mixed bag of mood, very eclectic, very odd. Again, It makes me think of Forbidden World in parts, I also think of Spookies, as well as some porno grooves reminiscent of the recent releases from Vinegar Syndrome for Sexworld and Sensual Encounters of Every kind. and just a bit of medieval renaissance music (track3). It's just so odd...

It makes me think... remember that a couple of years ago we couldn't believe that titles like Cannibal Holocaust, New York Ripper, Absurd, Zombie Holocaust etc were getting released on vinyl at all ? Beast in Space is one of those titles that you couldn't think would be given this loving treatment with a great cover art and vinyl release, If you even knew the movie at all (which I didn't). So I'd just want to say thanks Spencer ( and all my favorite labels) for digging those.

Thanks for the review @Nathan, good to hear good things about Beasts in Space.

You need to see 'Don't look now' a classic suspenseful horror flick, and I've only just realised it was directed by Nicolas Roeg of 'A Man who fell to Earth' fame. May have to watch it again myself.

I don't spin this often enough. What a weird record :) it dips it's toe into like 20 different genres. Plays more like a sampler than a score. In a good way though.

I miss when you could dig out amazing records for nothing. It's gotten so hard to do in these days of Discogs and frenzied diggers. I picked this DJ Promo copy of The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby for 25¢ in some guys garage many years ago. The library ID sticker tags it as "miscellaneous ethnic"
