Mateo Sanboval wrote:Was Sacred Bones the only place to get that bonus 7"? Because now it is sold out and that is a real bummer. I shelled out for four of the thirteen tracks already on the two Redux 12s from last year and I'll be bummed to pay for redundancy and miss out on Body Bags and CotD.

Are these the recordings that were issued as 12" singles a little while ago?

Probably a "Prince of Darkness" reference.

Fair enough.

I'm surprised that Sacred Bones hasn't reissued the JC back catalogue

Sorry @vi, I should have been more specific. All I meant was it wasn't the original recordings, not to suggest they are all previously unreleased.

@chief. What I meant was that around 6 months ago, sacred bones released a series of JC main theme remakes on several individual 12" singles, two themes per record. At the time I thought "just put them all onto one album" but I get the collector aspect of doing so. With this new release,I wonder if it is a compilation of those recordings or if the JC band has re entered the studio to re remake the tracks again?
Aside, It would be nice if Sacred Bones reissued the OST back catalogue as there records are high quality.

Sacred Bones released two 12"s of two, redone themes each by JC (Halloween/EFNY & The Fog/AOP13). I am assuming that those four songs have not been rerecorded or at least, if for some reason they have, not been significantly altered from the 12" versions. Though I would be very surprised if they redid them for a second time.
Lastly, I don't think Sacred Bones could get the rights to JC's old scores. Certainly not all of them anyhow. Many are actively held by other labels. Just too many hoops to jump through when they could just release this instead.

Cool. Yeah I passed on the 12s because I'm too lazy to want to get up after 4 minutes to change the record. Also too tight to want to pay £15 for two short cuts. At the time I thought they could've done them all on one 12". All that said, the artwork was pretty cool. I got it digitally for about $5, which did me. Having those 4 plus the others on a full length is ideal.

I'd like it on black vinyl, but I can't resist the bonus 7" with the deluxe so it'll be red for me. It's a shame that so many of these deluxe and special editions assume you'd be turned off by black wax. I'm a big fan of Mondo's recent black 'variants' - best of both worlds.

I wonder how record labels could control those soundtracks. I'd imagine that the film studios would have more control ie:Malek Akkad owns all the Halloween franchises OST.

rights are typically licensed contractually for a set number of years; 1, 2, 5, 7, 10 perpetuity. obviously the longer you license the more the perceived value is. i think the bigger companies are getting longer licenses. so it is possible that they are all tied up with someone else.

Re: Carpenter Anthology... Isn't it simply the case that Alan Howarth holds the rights/ownership of the classic Carpenter theme score recordings on which they collaborated... ?

Hence, I guess, JC's re-recording of the classic themes, which gets around that thorny issue.

Rights aside, I did enjoy the more 'muscular' versions Sacred Bones put out on the 12-inches, which were closer to the live sound of the touring band, and I would guess this anthology leans in that direction too... the classic themes 'rocked up', for want of a better expression

According to Sean from Storm King productions,Malek Akkad owns the Halloween rights. Both shite Waltz and silver screen records (who aren't larger companies) issued versions of EFNY and The Fog within a small time frame from each other which suggests to me that they aren't exclusively licensed to anyone. Perhaps they are on a limited copy license or a larger company owns shares in both labels.

Shite Waltz also issued Halloween 1-3

Mondo released Halloween (pre-merger). DWRC released II & III, as well as The Fog, EFNY, Prince of Darkness and They Live. I never took that to mean they had complete ownership, but some sort of format/timed exclusivity, or pressing numbers. I liked all of the DWRC pressings and artwork fwiw.

I think all the JC scores deserve to be in print in perpetuity. It's ridiculous that you can't pick up a new copy of Halloween on any format (last I checked).

I love the Halloween 3 record that Dwrc made as well as the H2 cassette.
I agree about availability of Halloween ost,it is one of the most important horror soundtracks ever and new people are discovering it regularly. I missed out on the Mondo release as it was at a time that I was unaware of the reissue industry. I can't jag a copy for under $100.

Beat ball + LITA released Bacalov's Summertime Killer. Black wax and also a lovely splatter color. Been awhile but the Colpo Rovente LP they did was a+ awesome, so I'm sure this will be a good one to pick up. Just ordered a copy from the Lita store.

I remain baffled by this color scheme. That said, please don't go back a few years to (re)discover the time I thought the choice of green for Aliens seemed odd. That is all.
