I've never seen Hana-Bi, but I just re-watched Sonatine a few months ago; lovely film.

PS - Watching the trailer, I'm not sure how I ever missed this film.

PPS - Looking at Kitano's IMDB page, I'm doubly unsure. I've seen virtually all of the films he helmed in the 90s save this one.

I've still never seen this film and have been told I need to amend that. Something about this style of animation/art bums me out for some reason. I can't quite put my finger on it.

@Mateo - The art style is a bit dreary, and that film just oozes black comedy. Worth your time if you could stomach it.

That is very cool. I have a few numbered items that I am pretty pleased with, numerically speaking, but one in particular comes to mind...

Since the Europe-only CD/tape on Varese are very rare, the 5-disc release DVD/CD set by Subversive is easier to find in the US:

Includes Simon Boswell's original score on a separate CD. The film is incredible, IMHO. This text from Steve Beard sums it up well:
Looks like Tarkovsky on acid and feels like Nightmare on Elm Street placed through a cultural blender."

Agreed! Actually saw it in the theatre back in the day, it played at the local arthouse where I worked :)

I also have this amazeballs set!

Love this flick. Killer set for sure. The workprint version is fun even though it looks like crud. :)

Also a heads up the cd in the dvd set has different mixes/tracks then the old oop cd.

I've got opinions on Richard Stanley....mostly on Richard Stanley's options on Richard Stanley....and I'll leave it at that.

Richard Stanley was in attendance at the Fantasia Festival, for the movie "Replace" which he's co-written. I couldn't stay after the movie to listen to the Q&A but I would have if I could have. Barbara Crampton was there as well. A shame I didn't have the time to stay and get maybe a few records signed by Barbara

@Hatter @Nathan - I think Stanley is now completely off his rocker. That said, it can be entertaining at times to hear such banter in a public forum. Reminds me that I recently heard Michael Ironside claim at a Scanners Q&A to have supernatural powers during a Spanish presser back in the 80's. You could hear the whispers of "what the fuck?" from the crowd. Dude dropped it totally straight-faced without missing a beat.

Jerry Goldsmith died 13 years ago today. I'm at work and will be spinning as much of his work as I can, starting with this one.

Not sure how many of you can access this outside the UK, apologies if it's a dead end. But I'm really digging this right now - a new piece called EVERLAST by composer Mica Levi (Under The Skin/Jackie).
I get variously Sakamoto, Sarde, Shore, Stravinsky and Burwell...and Philip Glass' 'Low Symphony' - though that doesn't dilute the fact that this is wonderfully original music from a fascinating modern composer.

Had a JG sequel morning myself on the commute.

Poltergeist 2 and Psycho 2...both excellent goldsmith scores.

@hatter, Nice choices. Since I'm at work I may have to listen to Intrada's expanded Poltergeist 2.

It sounds very interesting from your description. I believe she is a virtuoso.
