Hourglass Sanatorium is great and has some really deep philosophical ideas going on all over the place.
It's a bit of a tough watch though, as some Polish films can be. The dialogue and plot is so dense and complex it's a struggle to keep up with at times.


Coming back to night of the living dead though.
It's amazing how a film can be so small and so big at the same time. It's obvious how small the budget must have been when watching it, but Romero holds everything together with a solid story, where he takes an idea, a few people, and then builds a world around them.
I love the character dynamics and how they bounce off each other, and this even shines through some truly wooden acting at points.
The lighting and compostion is also fantastic and the way he instills fear and panic is superb, he really isn't afraid to take it to the extreme.
When those power lines go down, Shit gets real!
I also forgot how great the score and sound design was, did he also use library cuts for night of the living dead?

It kind of reminds of the Twilight Zone a little all be it much more darker.

It's an interesting media endeavour: volume 1 of each series is available to stream on YouTube for free, and additional episodes are available via Steam. A nice way to workaround the big studios to get funding for some high-quality scifi-horror.

@Cult - Stranger Things S2 looking excellent, as well as that ripping Thriller(?) mix with the Vincent Price samples, hot damn! That could slay a dancefloor.

Also, Ready Player One looks completely apeshit bonkers. I took my 13yo daughter out to see Besson's Valerian yesterday, and although it was nice to look at in 3D, it was corny af. I am hoping this Spielberg film is a bit easier to get through.

I just finished my weekend which in which I did a few reviews for my website. The two films I reviewed were XX and Captain America: The First Avenger. I also watched a weird western j-horror throwback called Let Her Out.

Blimey. Some films just pass you by somehow...over the years I've heard various little bits about Ravenous but on balance just figured it was not an essential watch.

Can I tell you, this is the most fun discovery I've had in ages?! I think I loved this film! And the score by Nyman and Damon Albarn (which it seems to be suggested on IMDB was a 'controversial' element of the movie) is fucking incredible. Incredible I tells ya! (I kinda feel like I'm gonna get a few 'well, duh! where have you been son' responses to this haha.





Y'know, in some ways I see this flick as a precursor to Bone Tomahawk - the bleak frontier setting, the mordant humour, grisly violence and off-beat characters, not to mention idiosyncratic approach to the score...think I'm on to something here.

In any event, and as you can tell, I'm kicking myself for sleeping on this bad ass movie for so long.

But of course now you've reminded me of its existence, I feel drawn to check it out.

Perhaps it was something to do with the period in which it came out (cusp of the millennium) - perhaps there were bigger movies, bigger bands, new year revelries worth spending my money on at the time. That said, I can't recall it really popping up on the goggle box much either.... not something you'd accidentally light upon flicking through the channels...

@ScoJo - Good catch with Ravenous. I haven't seen it since it was released, but I did enjoy it quite a bit back then. The score did not grab me at the time. Time for a revisit, and I like where you are going with the Bone Tomahawk comparisons.

There is a BD of this. Shout Factory put it out a couple of years ago. It doesn't look pristine, but, from what I've read, this is the best it's going to get. Like Dog Soldiers, the surviving film elements leave much to be desired. That said, it's certainly not the worst BD I've ever seen.

And now I've belatedly read a whole bunch about them, including founder Simon Jeffes fascinating (and ultra-relevant) description of why he started the band on Wiki:

In 1972 I was in the south of France. I had eaten some bad fish and was in consequence rather ill. As I lay in bed I had a strange recurring vision, there, before me, was a concrete building like a hotel or council block. I could see into the rooms, each of which was continually scanned by an electronic eye. In the rooms were people, everyone of them preoccupied. In one room a person was looking into a mirror and in another a couple were making love but lovelessly, in a third a composer was listening to music through earphones. Around him there were banks of electronic equipment. But all was silence. Like everyone in his place he had been neutralized, made grey and anonymous. The scene was for me one of ordered desolation. It was as if I were looking into a place which had no heart. Next day when I felt better, I was on the beach sunbathing and suddenly a poem popped into my head. It started out 'I am the proprietor of the Penguin Cafe, I will tell you things at random' and it went on about how the quality of randomness, spontaneity, surprise, unexpectedness and irrationality in our lives is a very precious thing. And if you suppress that to have a nice orderly life, you kill off what's most important. Whereas in the Penguin Cafe your unconscious can just be. It's acceptable there, and that's how everybody is. There is an acceptance there that has to do with living the present with no fear in ourselves.

Have to agree with brother @mateo - the TT blu of Ravenous isn't a barnstormer, I'm pretty convinced it's actually a 1080p upscale of a standard def transfer, has all the hallmarks. But it's perfectly watchable and preferable to any other version I could source. I'll be re-watching pretty damn soon, for sure.

Now....on to securing the rights to release the score on wax ;-D

There's some really great stuff from Obscure's run. Loads of it really. Harold Budd's The Pavilion is one of my all time favorite albums. No BS. Top 25 or something dumb like that.
