Agree with you on quite a lot of those.

I highly recommend seeking out LOS PARECIDOS (The Similars) which is a great Mexican horror, in the vein of a feature length Twilight Zone episode, with satirical/political undertones.... beautifully done all round. A little long, but never less than interesting, and often approaches genre greatness. The music is wonderful, with nods to Herrmann and The Thing amongst others. Joe Dante has been a vocal fan of it (which, once you've seen the film, comes across as an amusing Easter Egg/in joke actually....you'll see what I mean ;)

It's on Netflix right now. Superb poster too!

Set in 1968 with a twilight zone vibe, will have to check this out, sounds right up my alley.

I also see Neon Demon is up on UK Netflix, still not seen it.

I've been trying to see this flick for months, since it was launched as VOD back in November!

If it's any use to you, in my research I'm pretty sure I discovered that it's gettable from iTunes in the US.

just watched Beyond the Gates, silly...but a lot of fun and totally worth the hour and change it will take you to watch it.

Wojciech Golczewski does it again with the score though, pitch perfect and awesome in every way. according o his band camp DW will be releasing this, so i imagine it will be coming sometime over the next few months.

He is rapidly becoming my favorite new synth guy

Well this is a bizarre one... plenty of eye candy and giallo tropes... but a rather distracting Humphrey Bogart lookalike (and soundalike too, in the English dub) as the police inspector trying to make sense of it all.

Excellent Bruno Nicolai score that doesn't seem to have had a release, that I can find? Anyone else know about this one?

update: Enjoyed this one. Lean and mean plot, and with plenty of axe-wielding. Mysterious, sparse dialogue, which features a lot of cursing and arguing about the insanity befalling all parties involved. I felt all the effects were solid, both digital and practical. The score and sound effects felt like dark, modern horror, but were fitting and edited well. I caught a few synth warbles somewhere in there, and would be interested in a stand-alone listen to the score. It felt like some of the vibe was a tribute to both Hellraiser and The Thing, which was appreciated by me. Good times.

According to Troy Howarth in So Deadly, So Perverse:

The soundtrack by Bruno Nicolai merely recycles cues from earlier, better films, including Jess Franco's Nightmares Come at Night (1970) and the gialli The Case of the Scorpion's Tail (1971) and All the Colors of the Dark (1972). The presence of this music merely reminds one of how good those films were and how very poor this one is in comparison.

I liked The Void a lot. And as an aside, every poster for that flick is freakin fire!

Thanks for that @Bez - thought some of the Nicolai cues sounded familiar, but hadn't twigged that some had been lifted wholesale from other scores - need to dig out my own copy of Howarth's tome to read up :)

I saw a preview screening of the Void in London a few weeks back and thought it was a load of old nonsense, frankly. My expectations may have been unrealistically raised however by the cast member in attendance praising the lead's performance as being comparable to Daniel Day Lewis (!)

Obviously indebted to The Thing and Hellraiser, but that only showed up how far the film was from either of those classics.

Great practical effects and interesting score though. I would say the film's originators were more well versed in effects than they were in directing/storytelling. Just my tuppence's worth :)

@Spun - That's a fair critique of The Void. I certainly would not hand out any gold stars for acting, and the Day-Lewis comparison seems a huge stretch. I think I let the incoherence of the plot completely slide for me, as my expectations were not very high in that regard, and I was a bit more focused on what the film was going to show me rather than try to tell me.

Look intriguing @Bez - have only seen Mimsy farmer in Perfume of the Lady in Black for which DeathWaltz released the score a few years back for RSD.

Currently 20 minutes into another giallo myself - 'Death Steps in the Dark' - a bit Agatha Christie so far and as slow moving as many of these outings are, but hoping it will pick up. The visuals and the lava lamp featuring opening titles are, however, eye catching.
