OSTs catagorised thus - obvs many could fall within a number of catagories, and thats half the fun deciding! For instance, Suspiria could be GOBLIN, ITALIAN or HORROR/SCI FI. But of course all Goblin is filed together in COMPOSERS.

COMPOSERS
Non alphabetical
Together by country of origin
Each alphabetical by film title

SELECTED COUNTRIES
ie Italian/Japanese/Indian/French/Other European
Alphabetical by film title

HORROR/SCIENCE FICTION
Alphabetical by film title

CLASSIC/JAZZ/MUSICALS ETC
Alphabetical by film title

LIBRARY/WEIRD/CHILDREN'S/TV
Alphabetical by composer

60s
Alphabetical by film title

70s
Alphabetical by film title

80s
Alphabetical by film title

90s-ONWARDS
Alphabetical by film title

NEW
Mixed, 40-50 latest purchases

and I have one unit filled with non-OSTs, all genres mixed together, alphabetical by artist.

That's how I'm currently rolling!

I'm with @static, my only variation that I have 3 labels that are separated out - Third Man Records' Vault releases, Death Waltz and One Way Static, which are filed by cat. no.

I love the way the label spines look all in a row. Love it with books and movies, too. Unfortunately, my particular strain of OCD won't let me catalog things that way long term.

Maybe I just need to by more anonymous library records...

BUT SCOJO !!! What do you do with Italian composers that have done library LPs, as well as a few non-italian movies' soundtracks, horror/scifi as well as non-horror/scifi in the 60's and 70's and 80's ? Where do you put Brian Reitzel's solo album : with or separate from his Hannibal scores ? IT IS MADNESS this way of sorting haha ;)

@static14 : Do you separate your Tangerine Dream osts from the non-osts ? :S

Haha there is just no win, imo, sorting out a soundtrack collection never works 100%

Edit:
At the moment, I'm sorting all OSTs and LIBRARY by composer name ( Last name first) or bandname. If the artists have releases that are non-ost, I sort them in the osts anyway. for exemple, Steve Moore's solo releases are placed in with his OSTs. same for Goblin albums, Tangerine Dream as well. I have cut out cardboard separators myself, it's always a tricky debate when I have a collaborative album with two main composers. That mostly happens with library LPs. within each separator, albums are sorted by year. I have a few blue separators for some categories : Compilations, Videogame soundtracks, anime/asian movies soundtracks, and adult films osts hehe.

I have not yet sorted my non ost section

@nathan -

Like this a lot, youre shelving system looks pretty familiar. Mine isnt as confusing as it sounds ;)

Ps I'll bet dollars to donuts that @static has his TD together - otherwise...madness, right??

Ps just to add to the 'what the fuck'-ness of my system...I also recently got rid of every single protective pvc sleeve, and also systematically removed any shrink wrap that I came across while shelving/re-organising my collection. Will let that sink in...I'm sure will cause a little twitching out there ;)

@scojo and @nathan I have all the non ost stuff together. So Tangerine Dream non ost albums are in with the "everything else" section :)

And no doubt outfitted them all with used burlap inners and a thick layer of fryer grease to weather proof the sleeves.

Wow, and unless i skipped it no one made the "autobiographically" joke, so well done all.

So I'm thinking the final decision will be:

By Label, internally by spine:
DW
Mondo
Waxwork
OWS
Lunaris

Alphabetical by composer
All other soundtracks, new releases, reissues, and OPs.

OTHER:

Rescores, Ambient/synth pop
alphabetical by band, chronological by album, except IDIB, DWO, Ghost Box, and Folklore Tapes which will go by label first and then similarly divided.

Rock/Pop/Goth/Punk/Etc
Genre, then alphabetical band name, then chronological by album. EXCEPT IDIB releases which will be grouped together like the above OST labels

@Hatter -

Very nice! Cool mix of methodology there (which I lean towards myself...)

Forgot to say before - the only label sections I have are for Finders Keepers and Trunk...(and whadaya know - only yesterday, I decided to break up the Trunk party and file all those in their respective categories. Will probably do the same with FK soon too ;)

@hatter you've got more than one thread talking about it now, neither one actually 'on topic'!

Interesting choice on the re-scores - think I'd be tempted to put them in with scores, though I'm not sure I have any that don't go into a label section.

Given I'm not a completist for any label, this thread (or rather, this tangent) is making me think I should just move all my DW & OWS to 'gen pop'.
