Despite the season calling for the traditional rankin-Bass offerings, I actually spent some time revisiting their two LOTR adaptations. the animation studio that did them eventually reformed as Ghibli, and you can see the style for sure. flawed as all hell, especially Return of the King, but they also touch upon some of the thematic stuff that Jackson's films left me cold on, and they always have a place in my heart. there's some really interesting scoring there too, especially in the Hobbit, minus the borderline unbearable folk numbers that I have no patience for. Also, as much as its a departure from the description in LOTR, their Gollum is legitimately frightening and creepy, and is my favorite version of the character, likely due in large part to Brother Theodore's unearthly voice acting.

Well said, @Hatter. The original Rankin-Bass version of The Hobbit will always be special to me as well, even the songs like "down, down to goblin town". ;) I saw it when I was young, and also borrowed the 2LP box set from an uncle. I did not know about the relationship to Studio Ghibli - very interesting. I did not see their version of Return of the King until much later, and it felt like an odd add-on after seeing Bakshi's LoTR first. Fully agreed on Brother Theodore being a favorite Gollum performance. A friend gave me a painting of the character many years ago:

The Deathwaltz RSD vinyl of Il Profumo Della Signora in Nero was my favorite from the batch of 4 rsd title, and it's the first of only 2 Nicola Piovani scores that I own on vinyl (the other being Kaos). There doesn't seem to be much recent re-releases of the man's work on vinyl. Not that I know any sores from him anyway, but ''perfume'' is just amazing. when I saw this Blu Ray cover art I was very tempted to try the movie. Let's see if it's any good. It's released by RaroVideo, they have a couple of titles I've never seen that could be interesting : Nightmare City, The Long Hair of Death, Revenge of the Blood Beast (Il lago di Satana), Blue Movie, Man From Deep River....

Not sure if they are quality releases, if anyone care to comment, please do.

I had somewhat of an Italian day today, and watched the 88 Film blurays releases of Anthropophagous, Burial Ground, Alien 2 and Spasmo. I think I'm actually now attached to the lounge.

So the RaroVideo edition of Perfume has a lot of scanner noise in the picture it's kind of annoying. Apparently, 88films are going to release their version of it, according to a post from april 30th on blu-ray.com. Otherwise, the film itself was good although maybe a bit slow, it has a lot of atmosphere that's a bit more Polanski than Giallo. There's a lot of appartment set pieces that are beautiful and hae wallpapers that recalls the artwork on the walls of Suspiria with the flowers and vines illustrations etc, very Art Deco, purple walls, a flashing green neon sign lighting the appartment interior, etc. The last 20/30 minutes are great it goes to full Giallo insanity.

It's kind of a shame that the video itself isn't the best quality, apparently there's a slightly better German edition that's better encoded but the italian audio has no subtitle option, there's a english dubbed version on it though. Probably the 88 films edition would be the best version to get once that is released...

After 20 odd years of not seeing it, I just watched Society again, which I picked up from Amazon. It's a crazy as I remember it so I reviewed it for my movie site. Arrow Films loaded it up with some awesome extras too.

Not really a Now Watching post, per se, but this arrived in today's post and is a Christmas gift for my Brother, a man who has unbelievably never even seen this film. I presume that once he sees it, he'll need to own it for life. Just like everyone else.

Nearing the end of S1 of Luke Cage. I approached with caution, sensing I may be getting a bit burned out on comic book shenanigans if I'm honest.....but this show is killing it!

But let's talk about the music. Absolutely superb, I'm constantly distracted from the on-screen action by some little gem of a cue that dips in and out, blending soulful keys, Stax funk and crisp hip-hoppery in the beats dept - never obvious, always with a touch of something interesting here and there which calls to mind a range of great film scoring from the 70s thru to present. I'm just hoping that Mondo's LP (which I now so desperately need to grab) covers the broadest range of music from the show, inc. featured artists (The goddam Delfonics just showed up ferr chrissakes!) as well as Cotton Mouth's little improv'd Fender Rhodes interludes - which beautifully uses music to express the character as well as setting the tone for some of his most revealing moments.

I didn't necessarily expect to love either the show or the soundtrack. I'm totally gaga for both!
