Is anyone here running a 5.1 home theatre set up from Mac or pc?
I'm experimenting with 5.1 files and want someone to test a few files for me to see
if it works or not.
Even better, does your smart tv decode 5.1 via usb,if so which formats?

Need more details. What file are you trying to play and with what software? What type of TV/receiver/etc. are you using?

I'm looking into ways of sharing 5.1 audio versions of music. I am able to create 6 channel wav and ac3 that seems to play fine on mac but won't play back on smart tv. I'm basically trying to get away from authoring dvd and blu ray and trying to find a convenient 5.1 audio file that I can easily share.
It is becoming evident that I will be probably have to go down the path of creating a movie file (mkv etc) but would rather avoid doing so.

Was the source material 5.1 to begin with? AFAIK, something would need to be encoded as Dolby Digital or DTS to be true surround sound, otherwise you might as well hit the five channel stereo option on your receiver to simulate surround sound from a two-channel source.

Your smart TV might also be the issue. It might not be capable of bitstreaming/passing the 5.1 channel stream to your receiver. Why not plug your computer directly into the receiver rather than a smart TV? That part doesn't make sense to me.

My whole original post isn't making sense to you. What I am saying is that I am mixing music into 5.1. I'm not trying to play a bought or downloaded movie, I am creating a 5.1 audio mix from self produced music. I am asking if there is someone here that has a 5.1 speaker setup from a 5.1 audio interface on a computer, so they can test a mix for me.

The talk about a smart TV threw me off. A smart TV isn't going to decode a surround sound file and if you're trying to play something encoded in surround sound you're not going to plug it into your TV. That part makes no sense to me.

Either way, I have a 7.1 surround sound system with a computer connected to it. If you post the files somewhere I can try but I believe the file will need to be encoded into Dolby Digital or DTS for the receiver to properly separate the channels.

I think you're right. I've come to the conclusion that I just have to bite the bullet and buy MORE software just to encode Dolby. It's been a dizzying experience researching this...
