Caught alien and aliens double bill at the Alamo back in April, can't recall if they were prints or digital now, but seeing both on the big screen was astounding. I'd seen alien once before in 35, but this was my first time really experiencing the scale of aliens like that. Just awesome.

PPPPPS - These melee fight sequences are pretty atrocious. They look like a Royal Rumble when all 60 dudes are in there. Non of it makes any sense. People engage and disengage for no reason.

PPPPPPS - I bet Clint wishes he had this train in The Gauntlet.

PPPPPPPS - It's cool that they still had the prosthetics for Dr Zaius available to use for the main baddie in this.

PPPPPPPPS - This ending cut is awesome. Chrome pistolas and a savage slow built to the credits. Best part of the film for so many reasons.

I think Ghosts was the first Carpenter I saw in the cinema (twice). I retain a soft spot for it, and Vampires. Not classics but when you're in the right mood, there's enough to make them enjoyable.

Taking in a viewing of the Cory Kilduff unofficial rescore before listening to the tape release:

All in preparation for Aliens on the giant 70mm screen at 10pm tonight.

*edit1: 15 minutes in and I'm floored. Incredibly well-performed surround mix with some pulsating bass and percussion that are working my subwoofer really well. Great musical choices for the opening scenes of the Nostromo.

*edit2: tense build-up to the reveal of the derelict ship. H.R. Giger's awe-inspiring art design is nothing short of stunning on hd blu. Hearing a bit of a homage to Morricone's theme for The Thing as they enter the ship. Great to also hear Goldsmith's original stingers for the space jockey's reveal left intact and mixed well with the rest of the tracks. Zimmer organs and choral synths!

The scene of Brett's death was fantastic with some heavy, intense drums. Reminded me a bit of Maiovvi/Umberto's Law Unit project. This guy can deftly work the mix. Lots of synth chorus throughout. Loving this so far.

Huge pounding percussion for Dallas in the tunnels. Fucking hell.

Edit: The deaths of Parker and Lambert with the xenomorph reveal may just be the best so far. Their screams mixing in with the track bringing it to another level.

Pulsing, arpeggiating synths with the self-destruction klaxon are approaching the finale...

I've watched Dredd an unreasonable amount of times on BD and I'm nowhere near done. A thoroughly enjoyable, kick-ass, re-watchable action flick. A shame it never garnered the interest needed to greenlight a sequel.

After re-watching the first hour of Dredd I'd say they captured the right tone, but it still falls somewhat short of perfection - a lot of that due to budgetary concerns no doubt.

The mega city in the comics was always much more like the city in the Fifth Element movie, densely over-crowded and complete with flying cars etc. Here they just have a few obviously CGI blocks spaced out along regular looking streets bathed in bright sunlight. It looks grimy and down-at-heel, rather than post apocalyptic.

The score used, though I don't hate it (much like I didn't hate the Stallone Dredd from the early 90s - it had Diane Lane, for one!), is quite generic sounding and I reckon Drokk's alternative is a more rewarding standalone listen - but it's hardly controversial to say that.

I think this is one movie that really benefitted from 3D at the cinema - the slo-mo sequences were amazing. Watching in 2D at home can't quite match up.

In short a 'definitive' Judge Dredd movie is yet to be done. Maybe Alex Garland should have been given more free reign on this one.... from what I gather, though the original writer, he kind of took over directing/editing proceedings once the movie was a fair way along, so it was more a case of 'saving' the movie than executing his 'vision' from the get go

I thought dredd was great in certain areas. I thought the casting was good, mama almost felt like a character straight out of the comic. The story was pretty solid too and had a nice beginning middle and end, the whole thing felt dredd like.

What I didn't like was how similar the film is to the raid, was this coincidence? Imo the raid is by far the better action movie. ( on a side note the DW sub gatefold for the raid is one of my favourite recent releases packaging wise.)

I also felt like the film didn't really explore mega city and dredd's world as much as I would have liked it too. I Would love to see a block war on the big screen.
Maybe I thought there were a lot of missed opportunities, I would have loved to have seen a chopper sub story or something similar.

A Dredd TV series would be awesome and I think the TV show model would fit dredd very well with a mixture of anthology and longer running themes over a series. The only issue I'm guessing would be the budget, and possibly censors if the try to be as anti-political, satirical and revolutionary as the original comic, which was also censored if I'm not mistaken.
Thinking about it maybe in the times we are living in we need some dredd like satire and rebellion.

In the past 10-15 years I have only watched about 15 giallo from all decades. All the Argento ones. Some from the 80's.
The last year I made a list of around 140 giallo from the 60's and 70's I am trying to watch chronologically. I am only up to 1970 at the moment...
Next week my girlfriend is talking a holiday with her kids. That means a week of giallo. I am aiming at 10 movies. That will probably get me halfway 1972 :-)

All in all I have seen around 40-45 giallo. I'd love to start watching all the horror movies from those books about horror films in the 70's and 80's. But that will have to wait till I had an overdose of these Italian gems.
I don't have enough time anymore to watch a lot. I am happy if I get to see two movies a week. Still need time to listen to the scores as well you know.

I'll try to write some more about the movies I watch as to enlighten you all, but I am not a very good writer of reviews. And I find it hard to be subjective about this genre. I drive a 1970's car and have furniture form the 60's-70's around me. Seeing the decors in those movies alone make me very happy. Who needs a coherent plot when you hear those great Nicolai and Ferrio tunes :-)

@Deaf: very jealous of your Aliens screening! I would love to have a theater anwhere nearby to show classics on a big screen.

If you're interested, the censored/banned Dredd stories are now out to buy - The Cursed Earth Uncensored - as of last week, due to changes regarding laws governing satire, I believe.

The first run in hardback sold out on pre-orders (EDIT looks like Amazon still has a few), but the publishers (Rebellion) have said they intend to do a soft back follow up. They're also selling a digital version as PDF.

I remember reading the Titan re-prints (without the banned stories) as a kid, so this was a must buy for me. Was lucky enough to get it signed by the writers (John Wagner & Chris Lowder) and artists (Bolland & McMahon).

Bezulsqy - am on a similar giallo watching quest. I bought the Howarth books 'So Deadly So Perverse' Vol 1 & 2, which are a great introduction to the genre, as is Alan Jones' Argento book and the out of print Blood & Black Lace by Adrian Luther Smith (you'll be lucky to find one for £25 on eBay). I also love all the 70s decor and art design in the movies, the sexy dames and the fedora-wearing killers... my only criticism is the slow pacing by modern standards - and at times incomprehensible nature of the plots. Arrow are doing great job with their re-releases though, as is Camera Obscura in Germany.

There are still a lot of giallo titles that are currently unavailable however, even if there are some high quality CD-R pirates doing the rounds among film lovers
