Using an iPhone? It's a camera orientation "feature" (or bug if you prefer). If you hold the phone sideways with the home button on the right, then it should use the correct orientation. It's a flagged buried in the exif data. Otherwise, you have to use a photo editing tool to correct it.

i noticed that they go sideways when you are uploading square format pictures as attachments from iphone. so try to take a regular format picture. or just do it via desktop.

@vj - I had the same problem, especially when using that email shortcut. Something changed in IOS 9.x, I believe.
