I finally received my copy of AOP13 and the Goblin tour EP from LITA this week. The AOP13 sounds great, but I was really disappointed and bored with the re-recordings on the Goblin record. Nothing against DW, because the package looks great, sound quality is excellent as always...I was just really disappointed in the actual music itself. If I had listened to it before I bought it, I would have never picked it up. There was no character or exciting sounds at all...just very dry, dull studio revisions.

I'm not really sure how I wound up with one - but my Goblin EP is the split clear red/solid red. I thought that was a sub edition only?

After giving subscribers first dibs, the split versions were pretty widely available, and still for sale at LITA. While they give you the option to order a particular version, I don't think they have a way of knowing which is which. I ordered a copy specifically on solid red as I already had the split, and I was sent a split anyway. I did end up grabbing a solid color, which I think on this particular release, sounds better. I actually liked the new versions. They're not radically different from the original versions, but they're a little more rockin', which I think is cool and definitely justifies the new recordings.

Ok, just had my first run through of AOP13 and I have to say that while it is traditionally not been my #1 carpenter score, this version is friggin awesome. The bass enhancement from the 2003 release is profound and gives this a presence I haven't heard in this score before. Top notch. I had no noticeable pops which were not the cause of either static or a slightly dirty record. 237 is spinning right now and I have to say, I hated that movie, but this is an essential record to own. Also amazingly well done.

Has anyone had any problems with their 237? The last 2 tracks on side 1 are unplayable, but don't show any visible scratches or nicks that I can see with my own eyes. Track 3 just starts skipping at some point and track 4 is rife with some sort of feedback or crackle -- I checked the mp3 and it definitely isn't part of the song. I tested it on 2 turntables to be sure and they both had the same problem. This would be a subscriber edition.

Have a question. If someone in the US orders from DW, and that person has a question about shipping, should said someone write to DW or to LITA?

All I ever hear is how awful Room 237 was. I really enjoyed it. I think maybe people are taking it too seriously? I think it's a really fun film to watch, but maybe that's because I look at conspiracy information as a more fun "what if" scenario, rather than just black and white data that you have to either believe or not. I'm still awaiting my 237 vinyl, and am definitely excited to get it because that music sounded damn good on the film.

To quote this review:

http://letterboxd.com/poritsky/film/room-237/

"There's an interesting story here, but it's not about The Shining. It's about the people who see codes in it. Unfortunately it is presented as an analysis of Kubrick's film, which it isn't."

@zuko - Yes! That is a much better way of putting it. It is just like any social commentary/study documentary you find on Netflix now (which I tend to watch them all, sadly). I guess since it is so interesting in that aspect, I don't care that it isn't a whole lot about Kubrick or focused solely on how/why The Shining was made.

The main thing I remember from the doc is the guy going on about the room key, and how "Room No." can only be rearranged as "Moon", ignoring that it can also be rearranged as "Moron".

It was interesting in its own way, but it could have been so much better with a bit of editing, as anything of interest is drowned out by ages of uncut drivel.

I kind of enjoyed the doc. Especially the conspiracy stuff. I loved the overlap screening of the movie forward and in reverse. Reminded me of the whole Dark Side of The Moon/Wizard of Oz thing. I just found the obsessiveness of the participants to be fascinating. Docs on odd human behavior always intrigue me, especially on a topic I'm interested in.

haha! or how about : NO MORO (which, by that point in the doc i was totally feeling.....agree very much with @Si, I was enjoying it enough up to a point around 1 hour in, then started to get pretty weary of the company of those dime-store-semioticians ;) by the end, I felt like it would be a really awesome Shining bluray extra, but as a cinema experience it was quite laboured/too much of a geek-out! (and i'm a Kubrick nut/geek so that's sayin' somthing!)
Still I give full credit to the filmmakers, the way they presented the interviewees theories (without resorting to talking heads!) was very cleverly done, with a very slyly achieved undercutting of their nuttiness using film techniques etc rather than a smarmy narrator.

I picked up a rare version of Room 213 today. Standard orange/red mix, but the sticker on the front is for the New York Ripper release! Funny, I'm kinda over red and orange colored vinyl, as I feel it's a lot more common these days (especially with DW), but the mix here works really well, especially with the cover art. Now I own the sub versions and a standard version of the 3 new releases. Thank you Spencer, this is why I'm broke :) I just can't help myself!
