I'm pretty confident that anything released from this point going forward will be available at Mondocon in Oct, so im going to hold off on this right now despite how much I want it.

The video game market is huge & they go IN for vinyl soundtracks. The price tag seemed quite reasonable, but I've given up importing from US. great game!

My wife says customers are upset with Mondo via Twitter for offering a pre-order of a repress of "The Last of Us" . . ? I didn't read anywhere in the description that this was a limited release; no number quantity was mentioned. This says to me that these people are concerned that their copies aren't going to be worth enough to flip right away instead of being satisfied that their copies will arrive first. They can SUCK IT. I can't wait to pick this up from the gallery on Friday. This release will be legendary!

I was going to post a pretty long comment about this yesterday then deleted it because it was kind of a meandering philosophical business discussion. In light of Mondo's blog post today about TLOU, maybe it has more relevance than I thought.

I did think the fanbro angst was funny, but it got me wondering. Mondo is a brand that, like it or not, for better or worse, built its reputation as a "one and done" operation. In other words, once they sell out they're gone, whether it be posters, records, doormats or sweaters.

It seemed obvious that things changed for the records when Spencer came over and the label adopted more of a DW model (limited variant with regular retail editions as needed), but it wasn't explicitly communicated until today. And that seems in line with what I assume is a mandate from Tim League to grow the collectibles brand in line with the explosive growth of the theater franchise business.

It must be a difficult balancing act: how do you grow the operation without sacrificing the sacred cow of exclusivity and artificial scarcity? What would happen if Mondo took a few recent "hot" posters like Francavilla's Jurassic Park and made them available again on the website--would Espressobeans lose its collective shit? Would it kill the hype train? How much of the demand is what might be called 'organic demand' versus demand for a perceived scarcity?

It will be fun watching the brand develop over time. Hopefully they still have a green light to do an extravagant thing every now and then, and God knows Spencer and Jay can both dream up crazy shit. I liked the post today, straight up.

The collector in me hopes they leave the back catalog alone though ;)

Sorry for a ponderous ramble!!

I think the recent releases from DW have struck the right balance: a limited color variant is released, alongside a regular version (black) that isn't strictly limited although it's not open ended.

As Spencer and others have said before, the whole ultra limited vinyl thing is hurting the industry; it's a bubble. Half the people who are attracted to it are either just getting it to flip or because it's limited and will increase in value, which pushes out the other half who are fans who just want to listen to it.

Records aren't the same as posters or toys, and while I think there is something to be said for limited releases, if companies continue making everything limited and talking the hype of "this special color, only 300 pressed", then people will move on to something else. I don't think there's anything wrong with those things, but having an unlimited version along side that is the key.

People have jobs, and we all can't camp out at our computers waiting to get the latest thing. If something is so limited that you miss out if you didn't catch it in a few hour window, then there will be a lot of disappointed people, and that's not necessarily a good thing from a label's point of view I would think.

For me, I'm over all the hype. I've stopped buying everything these labels put out, and just buy the one or two things I know I'll listen to more than a few times. The only negative thing about the new Mondo/DW is that there is just so many releases coming out, which is only a bad thing if you're trying to buy them all.

We actually are not releasing any more records than normal it's just that they are coming from the same place now so it seems more !

Were trying to make our business as transparent as possible , we are also trying to bunch thing together so folks can save a little on postage , we don't want to drop a record on Wednesday & a t shirt or slipmat on friday and make you doubledown for postage .

One thing we are actively doing is comunicating , we are big but we are not faceless, were fans first and foremost hence the music newsletter , the blogposts and increased Twitter engagement .

Poster runs will remain the same .

As for reissues well, DW has the Beyond coming but had that finished way before we joined Mondo , you won't see any reissues on Mondo that's for sure.

That's a pity - the original Mondo release of Jay Chattaway's 1980's Maniac is surely crying out for a more widely available re-issue? Copies go for silly money if they're ever put up for sale...

That aside, like the new more 'open' Mondo...

Spencer,

I’d appreciate some answers and action please.

I recently ordered a copy of "Hyena" by The The on vinyl from Mondo following messaging by Death Waltz/Mondo saying it would be the only place to purchase the limited colour vinyl from.

Now that Transmission are listing the same item on its website at a lower price £22.00 – http://transmissionrecords.co.uk/shop/hyena-by-the-the/ – I feel a little ripped off. Will Transmission/Mondo/Death Waltz refund me the difference in price? I paid £35 ($53.80 USD)

This is the second time this has happened what with the Scanners/Brood vinyl – never again.

The other day I ordered TLOU (first run), with shippingcost included (Netherlands) it's a big scoop out of my wallet. But I had a choice.. Wait for someone else to release it, or just order something I like fron the people/company I want to support. Recently ordered Nightbreed straight from WW only to find out later that it is €10,- cheaper through Transmission.. But the thing is.. It is what it is.. I support those who feed my addiction :) Don't want to kiss anything here, but I love everything about it! Good work @Spencer, Mondo and Deathwaltz!

£22 isnt cheaper it's 10% more expensive than $30 before conversion fees and exchange rate rips. Not factoring shipping, custom duty etc

If you import from states you're gonna pay through the nose same as if I import from UK, EU, jap or Aus

Could you please keep this in a private mode or (better) Mail directly to transmission?! Thanks

I just don't try to care anymore about the prices... The conversion against the Euro makes all purchases from US and UK expensive. The only thing I try to counter are customs fees. In the Netherlands you only have to pay fees for orders above 50 euro's (if I read the customs info correct). So I am more likely to buy max 2 records in one order.
I also am very happy with how Mondo's customer service is run. They answered my enquiries very fast. They are extremely helpful. Can’t say too many good things!

Here in Belgium you have to pay for customs if the value of the package is above €15.
Mondo always puts $15 on the package no matter what is in it. So no customs for me.

The variants directly from Mondo/DW are the best. I've found a few Mondo and DW releases in stores here in Belgium. Retail price is above €40 and you'll get the black one. Cheapest Jurassic Park I can find is €52.

So I always order directly from Mondo.
+ If your record is damaged when it arrives you can contact the costumer service and they will help you out with a new.

I'm just hoping everything I just mentioned will also aply to TLoU hehe.

BTW: That HYENA on transmission is £30 (?)

Then we have the Black Channels 10" which would only be available from Transmission/Bleep in the UK, except I just saw in on Rough Trade with additional bonus cd exclusive to them... Its sensible to take claims of exclusivity with a pinch of salt and decide if the price is worth it regardless as to whether it pops up elsewhere...

I always take grand statements of exclusivity with a pinch of salt. More often than not they're bull.

I was under the impression that the version of Hyena exclusive to Mondo was 1 red and 1 blue vinyl. I thought the copies on sale everywhere else were 2 blue vinyl. I would also love a Maniac reissue but can accept the stance that Spencer has taken.

Listening to the july megamix. Anything special to get this past the copyright nazis? Every time I've ever used SoundCloud for a mix or even very brief 30-second sound clip it gets nixed by the contentID algorithms.

Still haven't found a really good way to put mixes up for friends, forum etc. Used to do Livestream but it's a pain for listeners (requires account & login) and it is more of a video + audio with not a great way to export the audio-only in good quality.
