I wish it was $25. Unfortunately for the UK its £15, which works out at just under $23 at the moment (annoyingly less than the cost of the new DW releases via Mondo)

Does the 10$ international shipping mean that I can order as much as I want for 10$?!?

texasvinyl: The VAT threshold here in Denmark is $10. Everything above that gets slapped with a 25% VAT + a fixed surcharge of $24. So a $25 record from the States will end up costing $55.

I'm going to write Mondo and ask if they will revert to old practises, otherwise it will simply be too pricey to buy from them.

@occhionero - from what i gather, it is a $10 flat fee for international shipping.

@occhionero - yep, found it:

"$10 FLAT-RATE SHIPPING (international) for ALL VINYL on the site."

I feel you @Rasmus. That's a very low threshold. In the UK it's £15 (about $25), but this would still mean only being able to import one LP at a time to get below the threshold. That said, with $10 shipping on a per LP basis, that's probably still going to work out cheaper (or no more expensive) than waiting on Mondo retail stock in the UK.

In a way, I'm not sure I can object to paying the VAT so much, as I understand the logic (I would pay 20% VAT on an LP from Transmission, for instance), it's the handling fees that infuriate me, as they can be £8-12 ($12-18) in the UK, irrespective of the value of the package. It looks even worse in Denmark - $24???

@layneharvey: thanks man!
@Rasmus: I wrote them and they said, they can´t use the old practice. Means for Germany 19% vat and if you are over 150$ you pay 19% plus 17,5%.

I think you can moan about paying Import carges or VAT as much as you want but they are just part and parcel of ordering worldwide (for good or bad) I agree with you Chief the handling fee is what upsets me as that is £8 for holding my parcel and sending me an atomated letter which seems a bit rich .

Also one thing some folks forget is that if a business is sending you a parcel worth £100 but only claiming it is worth £10 (to avoid you paying fees) if that parcel gets damaged or lost the business will lose out on the £90 as they can only clain what the parcel has been registered for

Out of interest, are all these new releases pretty much read to ship or will there be a waiting period? I only ask as I'm moving offices soon.

No need to wet your pants, in the UK customs only check a small percentage of packages. If it goes through the regular mail chances are you will get your package with no charge. I get lots of packages from abroad but only get hit by customs every few months. However a minority of sellers (for example amazon.com) use a courier which automatically pays the customs charge on your behalf and bills you (probably so they can claim that fee); if you do find a seller like this don't buy from them again.

I understand that Spence, but it doesn't mean I have to like it :)

I got a response from Mondo saying they will be marking each item as $15 each in the future for international customers due to international shipping laws. They're not happy about it, but their hands are tied.

I of course respect that, but it does mean I will have to find my Mondo and DWR releases through distro in Europe in the future.

Is it really like that? Here in Denmark, you can be 90% sure that customs will get their hands on it if it's sent registered from abroad.

In Germany the same. And they wanna see the invoice or paypal bill and then they see the real value.

@Rasmus, I don't know what percentage are checked, but in recent years it seems a lot more are getting picked up if the declared value is above £15 (used to be £18). Having said that, my last Mondo delivery ($30 declared value) wasn't picked up, so it might be correct to say that the risk in the UK is low. I've read on other forums about Germany in particular being strict. I've never been challenged on the declared value or asked to provide additional information in the UK.

I think Spencer makes a good point about the seller's risk when declaring these values. I hadn't particularly thought about problems with lost or damaged packages.

I don't mean to sound harsh on anyone (so apologies if it sounds like I do), as I have similar disappointment when costs increase or if I can't afford something I want, but it's been 4 months since the changes in shipping, and we need to make choices about what we're willing to pay based on shipping from the US vs getting retail versions. Now that it's been confirmed by Mondo re: values (thanks Rasmus), we can at least all make informed decisions on how or if we buy DW and Mondo releases.

@Rasmus "I will have to find my Mondo and DWR releases through distro in Europe in the future"
Good luck with that : here in France, the distro "La Baleine" is asking insane prices for Mondo/DW releases...Pet Sematary was around 75€ one month ago.
My local record shop has decided not to order DW/Mondo releases anymore as it is too risky for them!

Luckily i haven't got any customs problems for years now, so that 10$ worldwide shipping from Mondo is a real blessing, thanks Mondo!

I don't buy so much internationally these days, probably about 10 a month on average and I have been charged 3 times in the last year and they were on quite large packages. At my last house the guy at the sorting office (who is a record collector himself :) ) told me that they are not too bothered as it is not cost effective to collect the money on smaller packages so they just pull out a few to make it look like they are doing something.

The limit on declared value of contents is something like £25 for private mail, if it is business mail they take the combined cost of contents and shipping as the value. When I ship out of the EU I declare on the customs slip low and insure high.

That said the Royal Mail broke a record sent to Brazil which I paid their exorbitant insurance on and they refused to honour because the record was not packaged sufficiently well (7" in box mailer with two pieces of double thickness cardboard, not sure what they want). I couldn't be bothered to fight it but I have heard similar stories elsewhere.
