Had a great laugh last night, though it was definitely difficult trying to see what was happening on here, on twitter and try and watch the film itself, as I couldn't remember much about it. I feel like I need to watch it again! Does anyone have any blu-ray recommendations for which version to get (I don't have a multi-region player). It should be easier for the next few (I assume we're doing this again) as I know those films a lot better and have seen them loads (except Let the Right One In).

I take it we'll just use this thread for anyone else watching/wanting to discuss this month's selection for the rest of February?

I've got the Arrow blu ray of Zombie Flesh Eaters which came out in 2012 I believe. You can still pick it up. It's a restored version so colours look great - in fact last night it looked better than I remember it.

Also have a ZFE collection DVD set which has two sequels and Zombie Holocaust on. This can be bought for around £12. Looks a bit grimy in comparison to the Arrow as you might expect, but great value.

Haven't watched further than the second one as yet, which in comparison to ZFE is pretty bad.

Just need to work out which version of EFNY to grab. There seems to be a Special edition 2 disc DVD or a single disk blu ray up on Amazon currently for the UK market. The one Spencer and others recommend above seems to be US market only (don't have a multi-region blu ray player unfortunately)?

From what I gather, the R2 bluray is passable, but not as good as it should be. Shout Factory (mentioned by Spencer) have so many amazing-looking Carpenter releases it's almost tempting to pick up a multi-region player for those alone.

Thanks for the Zombi tip - I'll pick up the Arrow one suggested.

I have put off buying carpenter on blu that's not from shout, as i'm positive that they are going to try for his whole catalogue, I still use my The Thing DVD since i'm sure Shout will get around to it eventually.

The previous R2 blu ray is almost definitely an SD upscale. It's okay, but definitely not 1080 as advertised! There's a more recent MGM R1 blu which I can't speak for, but this article on DVD Beaver goes into it pretty thoroughly:

Definitely a film that hasn't had gold standard blu treatment yet!

Shout Factory's forthcoming EFNY region A blu-ray will apparently have a new transfer which is the most appealing thing about this new release. The previously issued SE DVD (or HD DVD if you have one of those players) is probably the best version available right now. Despite fans' enthusiasm for Shout, their BDs have not always had sterling picture quality (Some do, some don't. Darkman is a good example of don't.), but they rarely do their own scans so there is some real optimism obout this one. All of the current EFNY BDs suffer from being exceedingly dark (read: black) wherein the darkness of the original film had detail, but on the BDs, darkness is replaced with the color black for no detail at all. This new transfer will hopefully remedy that.

I just checked Shout Factory's product page and the release date for EFNY is April 21st. Ordering directly from them comes with a promise of shipping two weeks early, but that is still firmly April.

Hey Mateo, what other shout factory BD's did you feel were kinda poo?

i have Darkman, but still haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I usually am pretty happy with them, curious as to which ones i should look out for.

Hatter, Darkman is the worst I've seen, but The Island and Deadly Blessing also spring to mind. Don't get me wrong, there are several releases of theirs that folks grouse about that I am fine with like They Live and Halloween III, but I don't have a true videophile's eye. They also have some real beauties (Prince of Darkness and The Nest) as well as some films where they've spent money and time just getting them to look acceptable enough for a release (Final Terror and the upcoming Dog Soldiers) so they clearly do great work as well. My point isn't to be down on SF at all (no reason to be), but to take each film on a case by case basis. Just because it looks beautiful on your shelf doesn't meant it will look beautiful on your telly.

Yeah i actually have no problem whatsoever with their halloween 3, or they live, thought both looked pretty solid. Deadly Blessing is one i still haven't gotten around to. also..haha typo, i meant poor not poo...i suppose contextually it comes out the same.

Agreed that their prince of darkness transfer is stellar, i also greatly preferred their transfer of H2 to the one that had been released a year or so before.
