Okay, so here's the question, to what extent do you let your children "interact" with your prized records? My two at the ages of 3 & 5 are getting really keen and in trying very hard to let them enjoy the experience.

Just interested in what your limits are? Apart from generally hiding OWS cover art from them!

I think when my daughter turned 8 she was allowed to move the cueing lever up or done on an LP that I already had on the table - and she still hasn't graduated beyond that in regards to actually playing my LPs, but if she pushed, I'd give her more training and let her do it.

I don't think either of my kids ever wanted to paw through my records, but I probably would have let them do that (supervised) as everything is in protective sleeves.

I do think it is great to get kids their own table and records - things that if they wreck, nobody does more shed a tear.

'The label who's releases you have to hide from your kids'

This goes on my next biz card.

... Now to figure out how I'm going to hide 1500 Nekromantik albums from my own kids ;-)

I let them look at Candyman and I thought Creepshow was okay from WW but some stuff is way out of limits.

I let them both lower the lever and select a record but only after a deep cleanse of their grubby little mitts.

My 5 year old son loves Soundtracks. But I put the needle on the record for him. He never saw any of the movies (of course!), but he categorizes music in "creepy", "sad" and "funny".

The only music that really scares him is: Michael Jackson!

My 2,5 year old son is really interested in all the records but maybe because he just can't escape them. They are in almost every room besides the kitchen and bath room. When he was born i moved the rarest and priciest to the highest shelves where he could not reach them but with every single day he gets more clever and so i already moved arround 5000 of them to my office. I still let him interact, pull them out of the sleeve, putt them on the plate and sometimes let him drop the needle. heis doind really good in my opinion.

My daughter was just born five days ago so only thing she cares of is mothers breast.

the OWS records are censored with tape till my children turn at least 25 or even older... :-)

Congratulations @milliondollars

I have a 10 month old, so don't have to worry just yet (though my hi-fi system seems to be a big attraction to little hands), but I've been thinking of how best to handle the future. I have another on the way, so I'll need to think of something. I hope they'll one day be interested in the music. I'll probably start with Pet Sounds, rather than House by the Cemetery though!

Re OWS, I'm going to look for black sleeves to protect my own eyes, never mind the bairns'...

Congratulations @milliondollars is that how much your collection is worth!!! sheesh 5000. I'm lucky if I got about 800! ;)
Anyway the question in hand. I have a little girl who is now 3 1/2 and I have always had records around her and to her reach. I keep them in the usual IKEA squares. When she started showing interest it was always- No they're daddies! as she gotten older I started buying her a few, Disney mainly. We have a player in the bedroom and living room and maybe in a few years she'll have a player in her room. Currently though she still goes nowhere near my records or the player. We sometimes take it in turns to choose whats on next, she's now grasped the concept of two sides and has favourites of Creepshow and Blue Sunshine and anything a bit disco. Occassionly she does get her records out to look at the sleeves, but is always careful. I've always said to her ' those are yours, so look after them!' She's only 3 1/2 and so far so good. I know I'm tempting fate leaving so many of my valuables lying around and come to think of it did rip a rare cd to bits when younger. I wonder how I would feel if I came into the room and found Phantasm with it's cover hanging off or my Japanese Halloween. Oh well it's only a record, she's my baby! ;)
