Hey Members,
The day has arrived (in the UK at least). Welcome to month 1 of the STBC Movie Club:
This month's movie is Zombi 2 (Zombie Flesh Eaters).

Looking forward to this. Don't think I've watched this since I was 11 or 12 (circa 1990).

I've just posted proposed dates for the UK SYNC'D SCREENING, pop pickers!

HERE

If you want to take part, let me know over there and I'll add you to the list. And you can email me if you need details of how I'm proposing we make the sync possible (for those without the film on disc...)

For anyone not following the sync'd screening thread, the club has broken out into twitter and FF will be live tweeting at the same time (10pm UK time, Sunday 8th). A bit of extra encouragement to join in. Thanks to @disco and @spencer.

I just had to make a deal with my wife so I could watch one of my "stupid monster" movies, if she could watch the Grammy's tonight.

One week of February left! Who hasn't watched ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS yet?

For the rest of you who have, what are your thoughts? Many people consider it to be one of the best zombie films, and a highlight in the Fulci catalog. In addition, it also features one of Frizzi's most popular soundtrack themes. Agree or disagree?

Personally, I felt it was as raw and breakneck as when I first saw it, and I agreed with many of the comments in the live sync thread on Fulci's excellent pacing. There are many iconic shots in the film, with practical creature and gore effects that have aged pretty well and can still shock on repeated viewings. I appreciate the film more with each viewing, and the same goes for Frizzi's recordings.

My thoughts on fulci, and Italian horror in general are pretty well summed up by this movie. The plot is paper thin and barely cohesive (this one holds together a bit more than others) BUT if you allow yourself to be taken in by the film as a work of visual art and not necessarily a storytelling device, well then holy shit what a ride.

It's beautiful, wretched, gory, peotic, nauseating and sublime all at the same time. Frizzi's score, like so much of the music of this genre from him and goblin and morricone et al, elevated the imagery from somethig that could come off as cheap to something that feels like a dream. The tones and moods created by the soundtrack push the film past fulci's slapdash storytelling and into something so compelling you can't take your eyes off the screen. I worry sometimes that people will think I enjoy films like this "ironically" thanks to the pervasive nonsense of my generation's lack of authenticity, but the reality is, I genuinely love these films in all of thier quirky flaws, they are like living Bosch paintings scored by some of the most evocative film scoreing ever, music that provides real emotional cues for the viewer.

I show these movies to people because they exist in such a bizzare space, no one would be allowed to make a movie like this today. They are B films that think they are A films and come off like high surrealism and brilliant pop art, there's nothing like them out there. I think ZOMBI 2 may be his masterpiece, until I watch the beyond or city of the living dead at least. Anyway, sorry for waxing on and on, it's 7 am on Saturday morning here in NY and I'm oddly alert. Just wait till I get going on carpenter :) then you'll see some poetry. Cheers

@deaf, a good reminder for those who haven't managed to watch it yet. Also nice to hear some thoughts outside of the sync'd screening - very interesting @deaf and @hatter. The Club taught me this month about the greatness of both film and score, and I don't plan to go another 20 years without watching it again.

Of course, 1 week left of Zombi 2 means there's only 1 week to go until EFNY! Should we start thinking about a sync'd screening?

@Hatter - excellent notes! It would be great to hear from some others as well.

@chief - I think it would be helpful if we try to put together some objectives for the synced screening by announcing the desired cut to be viewed (including total runtime length), so people can see if they have the correct version. We had a couple people who ended up a few minutes ahead of the sync thread due to either starting too quickly or viewing a cut version.

Also, any technophiles care to comment on the NTSC vs. PAL speed debate? I attempted some research, and found many people claiming it no longer applies to the digital/HDMI era of film viewing.

@deaf, that's interesting. During my Prince phase (we've all had one, am I right?), the NTSC Sign 'O' the Times dvd was said to be the correct running time, and pitch. There's a difference of around 3 or 4%, I think. If so, it's inevitable some viewers will be ahead.

The idea for sync'd screenings was entirely @disco's. Not sure if he intends to organise more or wants others to chip in. I'll leave rules to him, but I think a Club sanctioned version for screenings is a solid idea.

@chief!

@deaf!

I'm more than happy to take on the next sync up. I've always been of the mind not to get too complex/OCD about it and just keep it pretty loose/fun...having said that, I also don't have a prob with trying our best to get a good sync with the next one.

Perhaps the best way is if I were to create a file from the UK blu (have been kinda trying to avoid saying this "out loud" but, ahhh.....wtf eh?) and make this viewable using the tinternet in some way. A special link or some such, not a public upload.

Sure it's doable anyhow. Let's make it happen in a way that works for the most STBC'ers without it becoming a chore/insurmountable and time-consuming tech challenge. I'll also take a look at the suggestions previously thrown up by @Static and others.

Escape from New York! I can't friggin' wait!

(and it's my birthday on the 16th March, so might suggest Sunday 15th as an option...heh heh....)

I'll make a new thread soon where folks can drop in and sign up as before, and email me directly for deets.

Bring it!

If you are watching a blu-ray or a true HD stream, I don't believe PAL and NTSC enter into it. All 1080p is at 24fps, so there should be no time differential provided we are all seeing the same cut of a film. DVDs are different. I think with ZFE, we had a lot of different formats in play, but also a couple of different cuts as well to say nothing of human error. I started two minutes late and skipped ahead to "catch up." I'm all for trying to sync better, but I wonder if texhing out to hard will reduce our number instead of grow it. Just a thought and either way I'm stoked for EFNY next month. Cheers, gang.

@disco @mateo

Completely agree, it's more fun than technical precision we should aim for. I don't think it matters a great deal if the sync is perfect, as everyone is typing and reading comments as well. I don't know about anyone else, but I spent a lot of time NOT watching ZFE, and reading comments instead. I think the different cuts contributed to the 'de-syncing' issues for ZFE. It added to the chaos - in a good way - but ideally we'd all get to the end at roughly the same time. Not sure we'll have the same issue for many of the films on the list.

Yes, that's how I feel @chief. As far as I know (unless you're watching some crazy ass TV version of the film!) there is no issue with different cuts of EFNY. In fact, if you think about it - ZFE couldn't have been a worse flick to start with on that front, there being so many dang versions!

As for the whole typing/watching issue - I found it a lot of fun and not a problem watching the film and posting on the board, but I'm not going to attempt to follow twitter as well for this next one - as Spencer said, that was a bit of a head fuck! (tho great to hear Fabio's comments of course...)

I'm starting the new thread now anyhow - let's see how much interest there is in another sync screening ;)

There are lot of great movies, with great scores. That currently would not be eligible for STBC Movie club.

I know some folks were talking about watching some movies outside of the DW catalogue. How about films that have not had their soundtrack recently reissued. Just awesome movies with awesome music.

Maybe we could nominate a film every other month for a group screening? I'm probably not the best person to organise something like this but just wanted to put the idea out there.

any thoughts?

Last couple of days of EFNY, then we move on to Let the Right One In...

I hope there's still some enthusiasm for the Club - I think this month is the first film that's not a great 'Friday night movie' and steeped in nostalgia for many. It's not one of my favourites, but looking forward to giving it another go, and hearing others' thoughts.

I agree @chief - I don't think this one warrants a "sync" screening, but will certainly be nice to hear more considered thoughts by people on their impression upon revisiting. Will definitely be interesting for me, as I seem to be one of the very very few who actually didn't care much for the film first time around! (I believe my pithy comment at the time was along the lines of "yeah, it's just a long creepy Sigur Ros video..." but then I was on an active hipster warpath back then ;)

@disco, "hipster warpath/Sigur Ros" made me laugh a lot.

I think when I was listing the films, this struck me as one of the few that's not really a 'fun' movie. I think for a sync you ideally want a movie that you'd get drunk and watch with your friends.

I'll set up a different thread for the discussion - we'll see how it goes without a sync, as most of the discussion so far has been 'live'.

I'll save my comments on the movie for next month, but I had similar feelings towards it on first viewing.

So, it seems LTROI derailed the Club. Me too, I just couldn't make the time this month. Is it time to shake it up (suggestions below) or close the doors - we had fun watching a couple of films but maybe it's not sustainable.

Suggested changes:
1. We use the original DW list, but take a vote whether to go ahead or skip a release and move on to the next film.
2. We use a nomination system, like the Deep Cuts thread. Using a list based on releases by STBC labels, we take the first 3 nominations by any member (1 nom per member) and vote on which one to watch.

The voting is a bit of a pain, but I'm happy to do the admin on that. If we keep going, we need to make sure there's enough interest. What do we think?

First things first - do we keep the Club going? -

If we don't get at least 10 YAYs, I think it's time to move on. Agreed?

Yay! Couldn't post on the first two occasions, but I was watching in sync and enjoyed the occasion. Looking forward to whatever comes next, and would have a keyboard at hand for realtime posting.

The nomination system sounds like a good idea.
