Well, if they're going to offer a very limited release, give a lot of lead time for news about that release to percolate through various feeds and sites, and give a specific time as to when that release will be dropped, how can they expect anything other than what is happening now? If you wait for an email or a twitter update, there is a chance that it'll be gone, so people are going to refresh whatever they can to try to get it. It's like dangling a bloody carcass above a pit of alligators and then getting pissed that they are all snapping at the meat.
I can't imagine that this approach is profitable to Waxworks, either. It has to spend time and money to make a site work that only experiences large spikes a few hours out of the year.
