While I was waiting in line for Goblin last night I was talking to a guy who thought they would be playing the score to Suspiria while the movie played. While this was not the case it got me thinking about events where this was the case, I think Umberto did do something as part of beyond fest.

I saw pere ubu play a new score to the man with x-ray eyes once which was fun. I have a bootleg of Lambchop playing a new score to Sunrise/l'aurore in Europe a few years back.

While playing the existing score would be fine (if maybe a bit pointless) what new scores have been created this way? Anything that really should get a release (or did get one)?

when they do this, do they just pause and watch the screen during the score-less parts? do they play loud and mute the voices? enquiring minds want to know what this is like!

I've only ever seen one live score and it was Philip Glass doing Koyaanisqatsi, so it was kind of a unique one in that there were no breaks or speaking parts.

At Beyond Fest Umberto scored the entire movie . So no sound dialogue . For this years Beyond Fest we have him working on something very special with Maiovvi that will feature dialogue.
Usually you get the artist to perform the while thing , give is visually are very interesting spin

I saw that one!! Very good it was too - as it was a silent film there was no problem with clashing with dialogue.

Also saw Jimi Tenor and big band play an accompaniment to Mister Freedom by William Klein - a crazy and fun experience!

Back in 1987 I saw the LPO conducted by Carl Davis play the soundtrack for the 1925 version of Ben Hur at the London Palladium - part of that year's London Film Festival. It was amazing - I think live soundtracks only really work properly with silent movies.

Hi @Lazyben, as an aside - I performed a live soundtrack at a few festivals last year, to the cult Canadian 3D horror film "The Mask (aka Eyes of Hell). We're hoping to self release a recording of that this year, a no-holds-barred-bank-busting-vinyl limited edition

That film has dialogue btw, but we chose to only score the nightmare 3D sequences and leave the rest of the film as it was, rather than try something clever with working new music into the fabric of the existing dialogue/music. It seemed to work well (judging by responses

I saw a screening of the film Dark Star last year, however, where the band (Animat) did just that - weaving new live music into and around the existing soundtrack, sometimes replacing it entirely, other times augmenting. Against my initial concerns it was actually pretty good. And apparently Carpenter totally gave his blessing to them!

But I have to agree with Dr Rhythm - on the whole, silent cinema does work best for such things. My cohort and I are planning some more scores this year....mainly silent 16mm shorts I think.

Phillip Glass did a tour where he played a score to Dracula. It played across the street from my dorm and I didn't go. I was a bit foolish then.

I've seen Pere Ubu performing live to Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3D! That was especially wild.....it was a looong time ago, but I do recall David Thomas doing all sorts of weird stream-of-consciousness stuff on the mic underneath the film's dialogue, almost as if it were the character's secret hidden thoughts!

I'm currently rehearsing for another live score for Flatpack Film Festival in March. We did 60s cult 3D horror The Mask for them last year. I was asked to choose something as a suppport for an Imax screening of Silent Running, and decided to re-score Peter Fonda's 1972 eco-disaster-time-travel mini epic Idaho Transfer. Well, not re-score actually: we're going to perform an adaptation of Bruce Langhorne's original music from the film to a radically re-edited version of the movie. Should be fun!
I'm such a huge fan of Langhorne, and the music in Idaho has echoes of his beautiful score for The Hired Hand a year before, but with some Arp-ey synths and soundscapes.

Wow disco, actually performing a score, revised or not, in front of an audience is way beyond what most of us will ever do. Noodling along to Dead Man is about my limit

As for performing live music - I do all sorts of often challenging stuff both professionally/creatively (film making, teaching young people, design and photography to-order...) and this is BY FAR the most nerve wracking thing to do. I've been in bands for 20 years and for me, performance anxiety is a fucker (and rarely gets better). But having said that, the possibility of pulling it off (and then, more often than not, seeming to have done so) is without question the most satisfying thing ever.

So... I reckon you should get that Dead Man live-noodling re-score project into gear!!
