Got one of these last week from someone cheaper than retail thinking it was going to be the RSD, I did get the variant. It looks great.

The record was super gritty/dirty so I highly recommend giving it a good cleaning first.

I got the Paranorman on ebay as well ($33 shipped) and got the variant. Mine was super dirty/gritty. The sleeves were filled with a grit almost like sand. I threw away the sleeves and cleaned the records and they sound great. I have never seen that before. I shook out the sleeves and had a small pile of grit and they were still really full of grit held in by static. I though maybe it was just mine.

Just ordered my Paranorman and Coraline! Can't believe I missed the drop. Usually I catch it right away, but of course, I walked away around 11:15 and it drops shortly after. Thank goodness it isn't the old mondo days or I would be a sad Panda! I'm hoping maybe to get my first variant with this batch. Both of these looks amazing! If I had to pick, I'd go with the Paranorman because it looks better with the packaging, but the Coraline one looks pretty darn awesome too!

Both of these are my two year old daughters favorite movies right now so I hope she associates the vinyl with the movies and for once is interested in listening with dad and fingers crossed being dragged to the record store with dad

I think it has something to do with the haze variant. My haze variant of DW's The Fog was the same way. Grit in the liner bags and on the vinyl. You definitely want to give them a good clean.

I think I will stick with Amazon UK as they are far cheaper on pre orders than any webstore online and the music is all I care about. At least people are smart enough now not to buy several copies of something to get a variant. Just take your chance with one copy.


I hope that these labels keep supplying places like Amazon with just the regular copies as they are much cheaper than all the of the labels official webstores by some margin. It's surprised me just how cheap Amazon is and how low the prices go during the pre-order faze and that includes shipping. I think variants should be given to those who pay the high price from the official web stores. I'm not going to mention other companies in this thread but what Coraline/Paranorman would cost me to buy and ship to the UK, next week I am getting 3 soundtracks delivered at roughly the same cost. I know there is places in the UK selling Mondo releases but they must be able to price their releases accordingly. I think for a lot of things these days they just tend to change the $ sign to a £ sign and it can't work like that.

@crazybeats - i did order Mondo's MANIAC from amazon US and got the variant, so it is possible they do the random variants through amazon as well. wouldn't swear to it, but i did get that one through them once.

I had the same grit issue with the "early" batch of Paranormans that hit the web. Plays fine though.

And I had successfully held out on Gravity up until now, I had a "what the hell, I'm already here buying records" thought go through my mind. So much for my willpower.

I know it does happen and people can get lucky but I think that all the labels should sell a variant on their webstore and supply everywhere else with their regular copy that doesn't come with anything fancy so that customers always know if they order from the store they will get what they want. I know that means things can still sell out but they can do it, it might mean a smaller run of regular black/clear vinyl but the demand is there. I don't know what Amazon get, if they get a lot of copies or maybe just depends on what the label wants to give them but sometimes the prices are just too good to refuse and you can save money and put it towards another release that you will pay extra for to try and get the variant. I always wondered aswell if labels even knew what records were which because it's a factory doing it all right? Once they are sealed who knows what is in them unless you open them to check and reseal.

@layne, it was rough, man - a minor personal battle that I lost, it's like I didn't even have control over what was happening. However, I initially put 2 in my cart (in hopes of getting at least one variant), and in some stroke of sanity managed to only order one. Phew.

I'm in for Coraline, had already ordered Paranorman from elsewhere. Been on a pretty good run with mondo lately considering I wasn't interested in half of their early releases. They even apparently sent me a variant of blue sunshine although that was of course the one I sent on to discosucks. Ha!

Not picking on you at all NQ as I read sentiments like this often, but when "in the old days" did a Mondo vinyl release sell out in a few hours? Excepting of course variants that had been sold elsewhere like Halloween splatter or the Tales From The Crypt 7"s (thank you JMCTodo!).

Anyway, I bought one each of Coraline and Paranorman, but I managed to stave off the urge to add Gravity as well. A minor miracle as I've withheld on that and Creepshow in the same month. Now that I've said as much, I'm certain to cave in a matter of days...

@mateo - some of the early releases were gone very quickly - deadly spawn and drive were two of those if i remember correctly. not anywhere near aas quickly as the posters, but if you missed it by an hour or two, you were out of luck.

still not on board with this score... never even seen the movie all the way through. too much hype. and john williams, while he has done some iconic movie scores, his stuff is way too bombastic for my taste. this might go the way of GRAVITY for me. i think i could easily skip out on this one.

It is nice to have some scores that you know you don't want. The past couple of months have been brutal. I won't be getting JP, either. I also didn't go for Coraline or ParaNorman, even though I liked the movies and the releases look beautiful; I'd listen to them once and probably never again.

On the other hand, Slumber Party Massacre is available this Friday, right?
