I am thinking of going to Deadpool this weekend.

Today working from home and doing some pc tinkering at the same time.

As a few of you know, I’ve had something of a rough year. Six months I’m very glad to be seeing in the rear view honestly. Not much time nor enthusiasm for a great deal of spinning.

Decided to have a proper session today while doing house chores, to work through a growing stack of unplayed arrivals. These are the annotated results of my journey….

KING OF THE ANTS
Bobby Johnston

Really enjoying this, score for a Stuart Gordon film that I don’t revisit because I found it too distressing! Highly percussive, with a sortof 70s crime score vibe in some ways, like David Shire. New UK label Treasured Films. Terrific pressing and nice sleeve art/inner notes.

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE
Paul Williams

Somehow never had a copy of this, despite my really liking the De Palma flick. But my Phantom geekiness hit high gear earlier this year when I showed it to my gf and she flipped her wig - it was like I was seeing it for the first time, and it just hit on every level. This is a reissue which is fine, until I score a solid first pressing or somebody expands it with the unreleased instrumental underscore.

A SCANNER DARKLY
Graham Reynolds

I’m not big on Linklater’s rotoscope films, esp. since this one is an adaptation of my guy PKD and it just didn’t work for me despite making sense on paper. But earlier in the year when I was gearing up to support Reynolds live I decided to grab this - really enjoy it! Like Bobby Johnston he’s a multi instrumentalist with a restless imagination musically, mixing analogue with digital in interesting ways.

CROSSTALK
Chris Neal

Already thanked @bez for putting this strange early 80s Oz tech-thriller on my radar, and loooove this synth score! Getting a lot of play, it’s really a banger. This is a very cheaply priced reissue (shame they changed the sleeve/added giant ugly logo on front!) as the original release is just a little pricey for a punt, and all Discogs copies are Oz-based.

EXORCIST III
Barry De Vorzon

I skip most WW these days but had to lay down sheckel for this one. Jesus H. Christ what a sparse, spooky listen! It’s a two disc affair, somehow - I know for a fact there is barely 30 mins of actual score within the movie so presumably this includes lots of additional atmos and sounds that BDV prepared for Blatty to use as he saw fit in the edit. More perfectly proficient comic-book style art from WW *shrugs*

WHITE OF THE EYE
Nick Mason & Rick Fenn

Floyd’s keyboard guy with guitarist Fenn, crafting a phenomenal, moody desert-meets-high tech score for Donald Cammell’s amazing, super idiosyncratic 80s serial killer drama. There are one or two ‘redneck blues/country bar band’ tracks that sully the mood but I forgive it. This one snuck out on wax not long ago as the score was previously part of a 3xcd box set of Mason solo albums. But somebody (aherm) really needs to make a custom sleeve as this minimal one hasn’t got a single reference to the film/being a soundtrack (maybe something legal?)

KNIVES OUT

Got both of these as Xmas gifts for my gf, only just cracking the seal.

We stan these films and scores hard round these parts, and honestly cannot wait for the next Benoit Blanc misadventure!

JOURNEY OF PERSEPHONE
George School Theatre Arts and Music Departments

A return to form for Trunk, with a loving repress of a rare small press school music album from ‘73 - an accomplished, sincere musical fable written by Robert S. Mandel and Lars T. Clutterman with heavy shades of Galt Macdermot and Cat Stevens amongst others. Beautifully captured live and performed by students, I live for this kind of project. Bliss.
