The Shining

It's been quite a few years since I last watched this and I decided to give the shorter cut a watch. I didn't feel like it was missing anything important so that's good and I appreciated the brisker run time. I think I would have to watch the US cut sooner than later to form any sort of opinion on the matter. Either way the film is fucking incredible, it's crazy how many moments and scenes are just engrained in my head.

Dirty Harry (1971) -> Andrew Robinson -> Shoot to Kill (1988) -> Tom Berenger -> Platoon (1986) -> Willem Dafoe -> Auto Focus (2002) -> Rita Wilson -> Kimi (2022) -> Erika Christensen -> Flightplan (2005) -> Jody Foster -> The Brave One (2007) -> Nicky Katt -> Sin City (2005) -> Rutger Hauer
Rutger Hauer -> Flesh + Blood (1985) -> Jennifer Jason Leigh -> eXistenX (1999)

Another one I hadn't seen in 20 years. I remember it being among the first dvds I ever bought. I liked it but not as much as I hoped I would...

But where to go to now... Jude Law would be an obvious choice. Willem Dafoe I already used... I might go with Don McKellar... I see a lot of Atom Egoyan movies are options. I remember really loving Exotica. I will find something :-)

Decided on Gattace. Never seen it before and wanted to watch it for some time. It was pretty good. And it still looks like it could have been made yesterday. If not for the young looking actors one would not think this is already 26 years old...

I guess Uma Thurman next? However I could use Alan Arkin and watch Wait Until Dark from 1967...
Interesting!

Terrific flick! Alan Arkin looks like Elijah Wood's character in Sin City!

This weekend I went down a rabbit hole related to Shirow Masamune, the creator of Ghost in the Shell manga. I didn't realize so much of his work had been adapted into OVA's in the late 80's and early 90's. I've had Appleseed on my list for years to watch and had no idea Dominion Tank Police was based on his manga. So I ended up downloading a ton of manga to read as the only thing from him I have read was GITS back in the late 90's.

Appleseed dir by Kazuyoshi Katayama

I believe this was the first adaption of Shirow's work? I don't think it's particularly good but it's not bad, it's just mediocre 80's OVA. There are far worse that I've seen but this one just kind of lacks anything of substance story wise and the animation is decent, lots of cheap scenes and a few fun action scenes. I'm excited to read the manga though as I heard it's quite good.

Black Magic M-66 dir by Hiroyuki Kitakubo & Masamune Shirow

Shirow's first and last venture into animation himself, apparently he hated the experience. This one was a bit more interesting to me, some really great animation with some impressive foreground/background scrolling. This is just personal preference but I don't like the robot designs in this as they just look like puppets instead of robots but outside of that I thought it was quite good.

Dominion Tank Police

The cover for this is quite infamous, I've seen it so many times over the years but never looked into what it was from. This is a 4 part OVA, I started ep 1 late Saturday evening but didn't finish it but really enjoyed it, the tank designs are super cool. There's a sequel type series that released a few years later called New Dominion Tank Police that I will also check out after.

Wait Until Dark -> what now...
I am tempted to go with Audrey Hepburn in Bloodline (1979). I have the terrific score by Morricone but never seen the movie.
Or of course the more logical route: Richard Crenna...
Typing this I already made up my mind: Body Heat. I believe I have seen this once upon a time but that could also be me remembering wanting to see it for such a long time...

I'm a fan of Body Heat and the score by John Barry is also very sweet and recommended for any collection.

Body Heat rules. Look out for Mickey Rourke in a small (but key) early role.

Body Double dir by Brian De Palma

We are kicking off our "Shocktober Programming" this week, my wife's idea was to do a Barbara Crampton retrospective. I knew what I wanted to watch from her filmography but went through IMDB just to see if there were any that I was unaware of. Well lo and behold she has a brief (5 seconds?) scene in Body Double which has been on my list of films to watch for many years. What a fantastic film, I had a blast watching it. It's shot so incredibly well, I loved the tunnel scene. And that house he's staying in is really something else.

Seems like everyone is all horny up in here just now.

As for Babs Crampo's bit part in Body Double..... a scene that was laser-etched into ScoJo's expanding young brain back in the VHS rental days!

The looks he gives him is cold too, she looks surprised then kind of happy he caught her. My wife made me rewind the scene and put it in slow mo which made me think about how I probably would have done that back in the day with the VHS lol.

I might have mentioned this before, but when I was a young lad the corner shop had a one-sheet of Body Double in their window for years. It was a small window and the poster fit perfectly. It was an eye-catcher for a young kid rolling up on a bmx bike... nothing like the local VHS rental store back in the day.

In later life, I grew up and married that poster…

btw guys, it’s DePalma’s birthday today!

It's fun but not nearly as good as the original. So as long as you keep your expectations in check you should enjoy it.
