The 1-2 pounds extra for the special edition is purely for the additional cost of the extra colour vinyl. Normally there is only 100 units of the special variants so the costs are definitely noticeable to me as opposed to someone like Milan pressing 1000 copies of a variant, where the cost is minimal. Basically it’s economy of scale.

Don't sleep on this one! Possibly my favorite new release of the year so far.

I love this score, it’s so clever, one of our best score releases to date. Bums me out that not more people have taken to it yet. As a Shudder original, I guess it’s a little more hidden than it should be and will probably be a slow burn on watch lists.

I'm both surprised at the price of the OBI and the price with out, because I see so many postings that don't have the OBI but want to charge damn near the same price as one with it.

You get it on discogs or through one of the Japanese auction sites?

I definitely did not pay 300 for my copy with obi… but I forgot how much it actually was.

Is the music the same as the Cinevox OG? I never checked if the Japanese had different tracks. A lot of Japanese versions appear to differ a bit from the other releases.

I've never heard that one @chrismcqueen the cover is beautiful, I absolutely love the title font. Do you know what the sound quality is on the repress for that? It seems pretty cheap

Also that looks like an incredibly clean copy, most white jackets are discolored with spotting or mold on them these days from that era.

@Inksb: Yes, the sleeve is nice and clean. It helps that it is a laminated sleeve. And yes, a huge part of why I wanted the OG is the sleeve art, it has always intrigued me.

But as Bez said, the Easy Tempo is a very good deal overall. In general, Easy Tempo releases are great.

awesome pickup!! that is a real classic. love the quintessential italian sound to the main reprise, but the whole thing is good. and the cover on the original is iconic! one of my favorite covers. the whole thing is a very stylish affair. I want to get that Arrow blu ray. the picture quality looks incredible from the trailer

ink- used to have the easy tempo and still have a white label OG, the easy tempo sounds great and is very affordable

@Texas: Yes, the Arrow blu is very good, the movie looks great, they did an excellent job.

I quite like Bloodstained Butterfly it has a great mood. Bit slow in places as it’s quite heavy on the police procedure thingy but that‘s often the case with the gialli from this era.

Funnily, the trailer doesn‘t use any music from the Ferrio score.

Duccio Tessari and Gianni Ferrio is one of the best combo's. This year I will still be buying at least one OG from that combo.

Tessari directed only three gialli and each one I love. My favorite is La morte risale a ieri sera a.k.a. Death Occurred Last Night from 1970.
Una farfalla con le ali insanguinate a.k.a. The Bloodstained Butterfly is fantastic as well and L'uomo senza memoria a.k.a. Puzzle is great. All are scored by Ferrio.

He also made some great poliziotteschi: I bastardi a.k.a. The Bastard from 1968 and Tony Arzenta a.k.a. No Way Out / Big Guns from 1973 are terrific.

And then there are his spaghetti westerns from 1965: Una Pistola per Ringo and Il ritorno di Ringo (available on one Arrow BR). Score by Morricone.

All kidding aside, do you find that dynamically this pressing is a little bit bright/shrill @Bez? On first listen I’m just hearing some quite piercing top end in the mastering, and overall a little... thin/brittle sounding perhaps? Will be having another spin or two today, to check that my ears don’t need cleaning out.
TG has provided me a nice rip of his Italian OG, and I’m planning to do a comparison between both of those and the AMS expanded reissue. I won’t include the DW release because it doesn’t interest me.

I do not find it to sound a little thin. But I am not good in describing how stuff sounds. I did think it sounds very dynamic. The bass at the start of the first track does sound like a bass but as I type this I am listening again to the first track and it does have a lot of highs in it. I would not describe it as shrill.
Now the guitar on track 2 is playing and to my ears it sounds how I think it should sound. I am very curious to know if the Italian version sounds different.
What is the instrument on track 3? Some drums? Love how that sounds.

I can‘t judge the sq of the Japanese version but at the risk of oversimplifying I find that Japanese albums of that time often do sound a bit more bright and ‚clean‘ than e.g. the Italian versions. Kind of like temporary albums are mastered, so it‘s a quite ‚modern‘ sound. A good case in point is Dawn of the Dead - the Japanese version sounds different than I was used to (the Italian mastering) but after a while I really found myself enjoying the very detailed and dynamic sound, I prefer it to the Cinevox now (which sounds a bit muffled in comparison). I know the Varese has the most „punch“ which is also cool.

Back to Schock: I have the Cinevox and think it sounds really good, it is for sure not bright.

And finally, just to repeat, one shouldn’t over-generalize - there are a lot of album both from Japan and Italy that sound like shit. :)
