I watched Spy Game last weekend. Loved it!

Also finally watched Saint Maud. Great movie but I was expecting something much more disturbing I think. Great score but as my girlfriend pointed out: "Do they use this music for a lot of movies?".... It has that 'dark' sound you can hear a lot in the show Dark for instance.

Land of the Dead Dir by George Romero
I'm not sure when I watched this last, it was either in the theater or when the DVD came out, either way it's been a very long time. It holds up better than I thought it would. The practical effects were quite awesome, a lot of fantastic gore gags. I particularly liked the one with the zombie elbow deep in the dead persons mouth and pulling out it's guts. The cast is completely of it's time, there was so much gel in everyone's hair I wasn't sure where they were getting it in the post apocalyptic world but they obviously still had it to style their hair. I completely forgot about Dennis Hopper being in the film. Now that I've rewatched the Dead films all with in the last year and half I can safely rank them in the order they came out.



Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train Dir by Haruo Sotozaki

Well they sure threw the budget at this film. Aside from some weird CG choices the film looks spectacular. The fights were incredibly animated and just beautiful to watch. The first season ended on quite a bit of a cliffhanger and this picks right up. The main characters meet up with one of the top level Demon Slayers, he's an intense and kind of funny looking designed character. My friend told me that the film was slow and didn't have any action until the end, not sure what he was talking about I thought they mixed action with backstory quite well. They did a great job making you feel the fate of a character at the end of the film that was only introduced in a few episodes before the film. I had a great time watching this, while you can probably get some enjoyment with out seeing season one I would not recommend it, you'll miss a lot of stuff.

The Green Knight Dir by David Lowery
I went to the theater for the first time since February 2020. It was a 345 matinee and zero people in attendance which made me very happy. What a film to mark my "return" to theaters. I absolutely loved this. Beautifully shot, acting was impressive, visuals were really nice (CG Fox could have been better but that's minor tbh), score and sound design were a big highlight. I pretty much only knew the set up and watched the first trailer so I went into this fairly blind and it just sucked me in for 2 hours. I highly recommend this one. It is very much an "A24 Film" set in high fantasy. It's weird to me that A24 has become synonymous with high quality art house/horror/drama but they definitely have a specific style that many don't do right now.

Loved it!!! And the score is def one of my faves of the year, up there with Cruella, In the Earth, Sound of Metal and Saint Maud!

There‘s a mini hype going on for this film that just came out on blu from Severin. I had never heard of it before but it sounded like my kind of thing. It‘s a solid Canuxploitation take on Assault on Precinct 13 from 1983 - perfect late night entertainment.

Watched 2 A24 movies this weekend together with my girlfriend who is extremely difficult with movies. She liked the first one and disliked the second one. I loved both :-)

Suburban Gothic Dir by Richard Bates Jr
I can't quite figure out what exactly I like about this film but I find it highly entertaining and get the desire to watch it at least once a year. I couldn't sleep saturday night so I opted for putting this on. It still makes me laugh and I think it's Kat Dennings best role. Ray Wise is having a lot of fun playing the crazy father/coach character. I can see how the film would rub most people the wrong way, it's very frantic, in your face, dialog is a bit much at times but it all kind of works for me.



The Suicide Squad Dir by James Gunn
I'm not even sure what my expectations were going into this film but I felt underwhelmed by the end. I laughed and enjoyed quite a few parts of the film but overall it just kind of felt like an exercise in the DC universe done by a very capable director who delivered an OK film. This is not one I would return to often if ever again. Cast was really good even though they killed off 2 actors in the first 5 minutes that I had hoped would have a little more screen time. Idris and Cena play off each other quite well (really weird that John Cena actually pulled his own weight in a film with a lot of quite established actors). Story was bland, the SUICIDE SQUAD is sent to a foreign island to destroy a building housing evil experiments. Surprise!!! it's US government covering up it's own ass. Definitely one of the better DC films but that's not exactly hard to do. I want Gunn to step away from superhero movies and make something else again but it looks like he won't be doing that as he's making episodes for the Peacemaker series on HBO and involved with Guardians 3. Also I think they under utilized King Shark as a character in the action scenes, this was a hard R film and we got one or two ridiculous kills done by the shark man.

How are you watching it? I go to the page but can't buy "tickets" to view the stream. I really want to see King Knight. I've seen all of his films as well, I'm a fan. Although the few interviews I've heard with him on podcasts makes him sound a bit insufferable at times. Excision was excellent. Trash Fire was good but not one I want to rewatch much and Tone-Deaf was a bit uneven, the good stuff was great though.

The Boy Behind The Door Dir by Justin Powell & David Charbonier
I had read some positive things about this one and one of the hosts on a podcast I listen to recommended it. It's 88 minutes so I threw it on last night and was not quite prepared for how intense it would be. The basic set up is two boys, not sure their age maybe between 10-13, get abducted. One of them breaks out of the trunk of the car, tries to escape but hears his friends cries from the house he's next to. The rest of the film is the one friend trying to rescue the other, while discovering what actually happens at this house. Nothing is shown directly but the abuse inferred is awful. It's a tense/tight little thriller where the main character makes stupid mistakes but you can't fault them for due to their age and what is unfolding in front of them. Not a pleasant evening of movie viewing but well worth checking out as I think the film itself is quite good (even though it's not something I'd revisit)

A Classic Horror Story Regia di Roberto De Feo E Paolo Strippoli
A new horror film from Italy??? I immediately was interested to see what this had in store for me. The beginning of the film was a bit iffy, I thought maybe they were going to do a weird blend of cell phone and traditional cinematophrapy but thankfully it did not go the cell phone route. Set up is people are carpooling to some where, vehicle gets into an accident they wake up in their vehicle in the middle of a field with a road no where in site and a strange cabin. I would say nothing really that original happens but overall it's a very enjoyable experience. I thought the set up and execution was fun, the final act didn't quite land for me but that's probably just personal preference more than anything as it was executed just fine. It's shot really well and the leads all do a great job. There is one scene in particular that has an incredibly brutal ankle break that made me cringe. Worth a watch, it's on Netflix.

Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone

I'll keep this one fairly brief, the new Evangelion Rebuild film 3.0+1.0 released this past week and I wanted to revisit the first 3 since it's been 9 years since I last watched one. My wife watched these with me, she's never seen the series. Even though they are simplified (well the first 2) condensed versions of the series they exist with the assumption that you have seen the series. So much character development left out of the films, she was extremely confused during the first film, I had to fill her in on lots of stuff. After that though she really enjoyed the huge spectacle that these films offer. The battles are insane, the budget is so big for these movies compared to a lot of other anime film adaptions. I actually enjoy the deviation from the series that part 3 brought, it was an interesting and insane direction to go in. My biggest issue with it is again the lack of character development, Misato is reduced to being an angry captain stereotype with maybe 5 minutes of dialog in the entire film. It also ends on a crazy cliffhanger that we had to wait 9 years to see the conclusion of. I can't wait to watch the final film, hopefully will have time this weekend. If you want to see weird giant robot combat with a story that barely makes sense with context of the original series and makes no sense with out that context, give these a watch they are good. All of them should be on Amazon now with redubs for English that actually use original cast members (unlike the baffling Netflix redub of the original series) and has great subtitles for the original Japanese track.




Sputnik Dir by Egor Abramenko

A new science fiction film from Russia about the return of an astronaut from a mission in the 1980's that has an issue. From the hours of 2-5am a creature emerges from his body with out him being aware. The creature lives inside of his stomach during the other hours. He is being kept under surveillance at a military base, a psychologist is brought in to study him and try to help figure out what is going on. I really enjoyed this one, it has some good ideas, the ending didn't quite land for me but everything else was great. I highly recommend checking it out if you are in the mood for something new in the sci-fi genre.

Encounter of the Spooky Kind Dir by Sammo Hung

I just got this bluray from Eureka, never seen this one but know that it's pretty highly regarded by HK fans and considered one of Sammo's better films (not his best but usually in his top 10). It apparently kicked off the silly trend of HK vampire/horror kung fu films of the 80's, the most famous being Mr Vampire. Sammo stars, directs, choreographs and generally just does everything here. It's a lot of fun, some very goofy scenes and just some absurd stuff sprinkled through out. I had a lot of fun watching this one and highly recommend it to any one who's a fan of 70's/80's HK cinema. The final moments of the film and the end credit freeze frame are one of the most absurd things that I've seen and did not see coming at all. It would be considered problematic by todays standards lol.
