I loved the 'reversal' in this one, very clever.
I hear good things about the film 'Frequency', it's on my list as soon as I'm through the final season of Breaking Bad 😬

This was really good during the first half. Roly Porter's score upped the suspense enormously during that part. The final third I found to be dragging a bit.

I’m watching a small indie called “an English haunting” on prime. Good atmosphere, solid scares, nice design. MR James by way of Dennis Wheatley, by way of modern Hammer-esque throwback. If that sounds like your thing, and it is very much mine, then consider this a recommendation

Yeah I don’t hate it, I’m just baffled by a lot of decisions he made, I think there’s a very good film between the two of them, I just don’t know that it exists yet.

Fear Street Part Two: 1978. Dir by Leigh Janiak
I enjoyed the second part almost as much as the first. Finding hidden caverns with satanist/witch paraphernalia was fun. I like the main actress who is from Stranger Things. It's nothing special but worth watching. Some really fucking aggressive kills, the axe to the face like 4 times was just brutal. The main thing I didn't care for was the fact that they didn't really play with the 70's camp slasher tropes, that's literally all this is, just some one trying to make their own camp slasher like the ones they grew up loving.



Fear Street Part Three: 1666. Dir by Leigh Janiak
This one really didn't work for me. The sets felt off, a lot of the side characters and background characters were not convincing and once again we follow the story of a 1600's small town setting where some fuck wad who doesn't get what he wants accuses a woman of being a witch. The conclusion to the Fear Street story during the final act was fine, not spectacular but still I'm glad I watched them all.


House of Wax [2005]. Dir by Jaume Collet-Serra
I'm going to start by saying that contrary to the "horror community" opinion, the 00's are the worst decade of Horror and not the 90's like some many like to say. I continually get suckered into watching these films from an era I didn't like due to others saying they are actually good. They are not, people just have a weird nostalgia for them. I'll take shit like RotLD3 & Wishmaster over this. It has a few good kills but it's so terribly by the numbers, unoriginal and a slog to get through.

Big fan of HoW. The last act is genuinely surreal and beautiful, and how often do you get to see horror with A GAZILLION BUCKS thrown at the production design? (Well ok to be fair, that was definitely a late 90s thing it seems... The Haunting, Thirteen Ghosts, Death Ship.... perhaps the idea was to make up for any lack of originality with such startling large scale sets, set pieces and prod. design that they hoped we would be distracted? Worked for me in this one is alls I can say ;)

Seeing the house melt was awesome but there was just so much dumb shit going on around it I was annoyed. Like her running into the room, pushing the wax baby bed in front of the door only to have the person cut the wax babies down the middle just like when they were kids, really?!?!? Then she couldn't get out of the room! which was on the second floor and had an entire wall made of glass. Break it and jump out. Nope she then runs out of the room and directly into the wall and falls over, yea that's how hallways work you probably shouldn't run straight into the wall. Then the twin falls onto the body of his brother and their faces line back up as they get engulfed in wax, again really?!?! And the final moment of stupidity was them digging through the wax wall (that's actually cool) but they come out into the building logo, House of Wax, as it's melting and just sets them down on the ground (my wife let out a huge laugh here and bluntly said that was fucking stupid).

100%. The most irritating part of some of these examples is a few of them wouldn't be bad at all with a few adjustments. the Haunting has a great JG score (like legitimately one of his best of his later period), great sets, and for most of the run time is actually a very solid adaptation of the novel. The cast is a little on the nose, but Taylor is perfect as Nell, and I can even deal with the story changes, but those CGI ghosts really just destroy it, but you know...i still watch it once in a while. that and remake of House on Haunted Hill which is shockingly a lot of fun are some of my favs from this weird period. and honestly, these remakes of 50s/60s horror have aged better and are more watchable than the following wave of slasher remakes we suffered later on. they aren't good, but i'll watch any of them a million times before i bother with the RZ halloweens et al.

13 Ghosts I actually really enjoyed when it came out (I saw it in the theaters and bought the VHS) but it did not hold up on a revisit a year or two ago. Which sucks because I want it to still be good. CG is really rough but it was mostly the editing and terrible acting that bothered me.

Gunpowder Milkshake. Dir by Navot Papushado
Full disclosure I love Carla Gugino and Karen Gillan so my enjoyment for this movie was slightly colored in their favor. With that said this film is fun but nothing spectacular. Action sequences range from highly entertaining to poorly shot and choreographed. The biggest issue is that Karen really isn't an action star and you can tell she had a hard time doing some of the stuff required here. Fun characters, goofy action scenes, playful kills (although some very graphic ones) and an overall mediocre storyline that's kind of been told a million times, hitman (woman) working for big agency kills the wrong person, said person's family member wants revenge and big agency severs ties with hitman. If you're looking for some light fluffy action entertainment where you can turn your brain off and enjoy some fun set pieces this is it, otherwise I'd say skip it. Lena Headey, Angela Bassett and Michele Yeoh all do great work with what little screen time they have. Desert Eagle bayonets are cool.

Werewolves Within. Dir by Josh Ruben
I thought this was really fun. It's a murder mystery in a small town with a bunch of oddballs. Cast is really great, lots of funny little moments sprinkled through out. It is a more comedy than horror which was fine with me. Recommended if you want something more light hearted and entertaining. I think it is coming to Shudder in the near future but not 100% on that.


In the Earth. Dir by Ben Wheatley
This is the type of weirdo shit I want to see out of Wheatley. I know a bunch of folks on here were saying how they wanted to watch this but did any of you? What were your thoughts? In particular @bez and @scojo? I thought the cast was great, in particular Reece Shearsmith who I've become quite familiar with working through Inside No 9 over the last few weeks. I didn't even recognize him at first but once he started talking I realized it was him. This a small and quite contained film, probably the closest he's done to A Field In England since that film. A great score, some trippy visuals and my kind of story, folk horror wrapped in obsession. It definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, it's sitting in the 5's on IMDB. Some insanely graphic and uncomfortable gore, he just lets the camera linger on gross shit, not cutting away. I'll take this over Free Fire or High Rise any day. Have any of you seen Happy New Year, Colin Burstead? That one I missed and wondering if it's worth checking out

I enjoyed WW quite a bit although my interest waned in the last 20mins. Id happily rewatch though.
ITE wasn't for me sadly. Not a big Wheatley fan if I'm blunt (his first two films were great and Ive liked nothing since). This one I found pretty grating, both the story and characters. A real 'trying too hard' folk horror fetishism but sortof ludicrous rather than disturbing?

I agree with you on the last 20ish minutes of WW. The final reveal wasn't as good as the previous hour or so. But that previous hour was really charming and entertaining.

I've got that film I See You on the docket for this weekend or next week, just waiting to see if I can find a digital copy. Hopefully gonna check out Spiral From the Book of Saw, I have super low expectations but still feel the urge to watch it.

Thanks for posting those flicks @inks they were not on my radar at all. Man I got to up my current movie game. I also have to get back on the Tony Scott Train. I’ve had a busy couple months and had no time for things I watch alone. Boo-urns.

I remember when I watched The Invisible Man (the last film I’ve seen in a theatre) spiral was one of the trailers. It sucked me in so hard until I realized it was another Saw film. I literally let out a awwww as I’m not into the saw films at all. I was duped. At some point I’m sure I will watch it but I’m in no rush at all.
