Pretty much a perfect Sunday lunchtime movie anyway...

Jesus god what an utter piece of shit.

I wouldn't have this soundtrack in my collection if Charles Band paid me.

It looked like Beuchler was handed a ziplock bag filled with microwaved cheese string and moldy diapers, and given 45minutes til they rolled camera on fx.

@Evan, if you reveal that you worked on this - I'm cancelling you.

I never had an affinity for this or many other "gremlins" knock offs but i have friends who LOVE these. i love a quirky creature feature as much as the next weirdo, but stuff like this is best enjoyed with the silhouettes of wise cracking robots attached if at all.

It may still be worth a watch for you. While I don't hold it in very high regard, I was mildly entertained last time I watched it. It's kind of typical Charles Band fodder, so if you know what you're getting into and you want to see some bad effects in a weird satanic cult film with some bad acting then throw it on.

Jakob's Wife. Dir by Travis Stevens

First things first, I loved this, it was made for me. It won't be for everyone so take my praise with a grain of salt. Travis Stevens directed the fairly entertaining Girl on the Third Floor in 2019, when I found out his follow up film was going to be a Barbara Crampton lead film with Larry Fessenden I was all in with out any other knowledge. I left it that way, I ignored all press, reviews, most images of the film (a few slipped by but with no context). So I went into this film just knowing the players involved. Barbara carries this film, this feels like the meatiest role she's had, there's more to this character than a majority of the roles she's cast in and she plays it to her fullest. Larry on the other hand is playing the most normal character I've seen him portray in ages. He's just an old minister who is too controlling of his wife, that's it, nothing weird or out of the ordinary. It was really awesome to actually have Larry in a role that's longer than 5-10 minutes as well, he's in the film the entire time. It's a fairly basic vampire film that involves lust, love and finding yourself. It has a few minor twists on the formula but it's more about the characters involved than trying something entirely new with vampire mythology. Score was pretty good, I definitely took note of a few cues. This will be coming to Shudder in the near future, I couldn't wait and rented it the day it came out for $6. If any of what I described sounds interesting you should check it out. As a big Crampton and Fessenden fan, this film delivered.

love Larry, was looking forward to this, sounds like i'll dig it as much as you. i used to see him when i worked downtown all the time, i don't know if his office was down near mine or he lived int eh area but i used to see him in the neighborhood pretty frequently.

Ghoulies, Critters, Munchies, and Hobgoblins are all hilarious films when watched properly. Like with a large group of people plied with alcohol.

I will defend Critters, I think it's a good film. The rest I agree with you.

I saw the most beat up 35mm print of Critters a few years back, it was tinted red in so many parts, the scratches near reel changes were almost unbearable and a few were into the optical track which hurt the ears a touch but it all added to charm of the film and experiencing it such a state made the whole thing feel worth going out to see. I have pristine bluray at home but seeing that beat up print felt special, something that many people had also experienced over the years as well.

I saw a print of Halloween like that once, it was one of my favorite movie experiences. It was red throughout, dusty and speckled and scratched, and it felt perfect, like this thing had been screened so many times for nearly 40 years you could feel the grindhouse energy of it.

The print I saw of Halloween a few years ago wasn't terribly scratched or beat up but it was very pink/red through out. That's one thing I've been very fortunate with over the last 5 or so years. We don't have any archival theater houses or Alamo type places that play stuff like that on the regular but we have a wonderful independent theater and the George Eastman house. Both of which have access to very big library of 35mm prints. Fright Rags the t-shirt company partnered with the local independent theater and hosts monthly 35mm screenings of horror, cult and 80s action films. I've seen Evil Dead 1 & 2, Alien, Aliens, Creepshow 1&2 double feature, FF13 films, Critters, TMNT, Robocop, Predator, NOES 1 & 3, Halloween 1 & 2 and a handful of others. When I used to live closer I was going every month but when I moved about an hour away from the theater I became much more picky, now I'm dying to get back for a screening of just about anything. One I was very bummed about missing was Big Trouble In Little China. I would have loved to see that on the big screen.

Ugh, yeah. My Alamo is likely not reopening, unrelated to their restructure. hoping they can figure something out because i practically lived there. I miss things like that so much.

I didn't know Fright Rags did stuff like that, but i also forget they are up there. i buy from them every now and then these days but i used to get nearly everything they put out, i've got a PILE of their old designs from like 2008-2012

I had a run of doing a regular 16mm cult feature night here a few years ago, hiring out a small indie cinema theatre once a month. It was during the time I was rabidly collecting prints, I had a really nice selection. One of my favourite screenings was Assault on Precinct 13, with an aud of about 25-30 people. It was everything I'm against as a cinephile: beaten up print, in cropped 4:3 (not even pan/scan, just a centred frame so there was sooo much missing!), and really faded/pink. It was an incredible way to see that film, such a fun show.
Another standout was Cat People, also a scratchy, faded print - what was amazing to me was that, stripped of the 'artful beauty' of it's look, it revealed what a schlocky grindhouse flick it basically is.

for sure, and It's an interesting thing you bring up, because if this was the first time i was seeing any of these films i'd be disappointed. i want clean, AOR, spotless-full-grain-intact-as-close-to-new-and-as-intended-to-be-seen as possible, but that is almost a separate "craving" . at home and for the sake of the film I need the best print available. but getting together with friends to see something we are all famialr with in a unique and special presentation, I'm totally fine with these beat up prints because of the experience.

I saw the restoration premiere of night of the living dead at MOMA with Romero speaking, it was one of the best cinema nights of my life for obvious reasons. But so was seeing that beat to hell halloween print and for completely different reasons.

KC Alamo closed too. COVID and a workplace sexual harassment situation. I love the offerings at Alamo, but I'm old school and don't need to eat a cheeseburger during a movie. It can be very distracting. The perfect hybrid for me would be a small arthouse without food, but those don't make enough skrilla.

I didn't realize they did food like that at Alamo's. There used to be a theater near me in NH that did that type of thing and my friend always tried to get me to go but I never would, I didn't understand why he wanted to eat dinner while watching a movie. I can barely get all the popcorn in my mouth while watching, dont' think I could handle a burger and fries
