BN should offer two options for classics... Standard classic press for the $25 price and then the exact same record packaged in a glossy tip-on for $40. I have a few like Basra that sound awesome, but the sleeves are kinda meh

Craft announced a Kenny dorham for one of the rsd drops days. Kevin gray master, tip on jacket. I'll be trying to get one. Looks like 3900 copies so hopefully that will be plenty to go around.

Quiet Kenny is a really good album, almost bought the 2017 Analogue Production also mastered by KG the other week but decided to go for something else from the same seller. The AP is stereo this one seems to be mono but I might be mistaken, the Craft newsletter states „all-analog mastering from the original mono tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio“.

Nice catch! even better it's a mono.

This came today. Some of these srx sound good (Moanin', Songs for my Father), some sound great (Afro-Cuban, Speak No Evil) but a couple like Sidewinder and Solid explode off the needle and for whatever reason just absolutely scream.

The guy who runs People's Records listed a few of these consignment. I had the scratch to buy Solid. Wanted others but they went too fast and cost too much! He had expensive but very fair prices compared to some. I almost picked Blues Walk but am happy with the choice. The rhythm section lays down a heavy groove and Joe henderson knocks you upside the head. "Grants tune" is awesome.

There is some investigating going on whether the Mono is a fold down done by KG or a 50/50 recording being cut to mono according to RVG's notes by KG. Either way, it's exciting to see more AAA stuff coming from Craft at a sub-$100 price.

@Texas: Sounds like you did the right choice then re the SRX. I actually have Blues Walk (my only SRX) and while it sounds really good I can't say it particularily stands out vs any other good audiophile Jazz release (Mofi, Analogue Productions, Music Matters non-SRX, ...).

@Mateo: Thanks for the additional intel, I will try to get hold of that one in any case.

So this Craft reissue of Chet Baker's "Chet Stereo" is a fantastic pressing. Maybe one of the best I've heard. Ive noticed Craft tossed around here a bit lately. So can someone give me the quick skinny?

Edit: it's just "Chet". doink.

texasvinyl wrote: Thu Apr 08, 2021 8:07 pm Chris I'd be interested to A/B one of the ones they pressed on standard and SRX wax to see if there's a difference.

I found one guy who compared a 2x45rpm, BN80 and SRX

https://audioexchange.wordpress.com/201 ... ict-is-in/

Today's spin is Johnny vol 2
Yeah, would also be interested in that comparison. I guess ultimately with these it comes down to the mastering (if they used a different one which is the case if their first release was several years ago) and personal preferences.

Nice one! I suppose it‘s also the SRX version?

I‘m kicking off my Friday evening with this one:

Amazing album, Chris! That opening cut is almost ECM level moody. Which pressing? Did mmj do one?

Yes, Mateo it is a MMJ pressing - came out in 2011, there isn‘t a better/more cost-effective alternative yet.
Normally this album is perfect late night listening for me but just felt like starting my evening with it today.

Wicked fun series, JM.

Chris, I have an 80s (I think?) repress. Seems a perfect fit for the Tone Poet series to me.

Nice one it's hard to find any copy of that jackie mclean

The Johnny is the srx yes sounding really good. I like the record, the three tenors give each other space and the whole thing has a good vibe.

Current spin is this Village of the Pharoahs, another with a good vibe. "Memories of Lee Morgan" is my favorite here a really beautiful spiritual track

Also picked this up today. My other copy is remastered so I was curious how an OG compares. There’s so many different pressings for this one. Anyone have some intel on which one is the best to get? I just love it so much.

@Pete: Yeah, I think this is a great pressing to own. Can‘t speak for it from personal experience, have it on my wishlist. There’s also a 2x45 version if you don‘t mind the side flipping: https://www.discogs.com/Herbie-Hancock ... e/16493715

@Texas, nice! You slowly but surely seem to get all the SRX releases.

This is my favorite pressing as well. Although I will say that the Music On Vinyl Hancock reissues are extremely good, Headhunters included. I honestly don't think most peaople, or their systems, would disagree.

I checked it out and now I’m sorely pressed if I need this copy. I’m leaning towards yeas. I do have the Music on Vinyl version so maybe I’ll sit with it give it some more spins. See if I can justify a third copy.
ChrisMcQueen007 wrote: Sun Apr 11, 2021 7:32 am There’s also a 2x45 version if you don‘t mind the side flipping
This is an eternal debate I have with my self constantly. I have a bunch of albums set at 45 speed. I cool with them if I’m sitting down actually listing to the album but it can be a chore sometimes to be constantly flipping. Especially if I’m doing other things while I listen. This head hunters version might be a little silly as I would assume that would mean just one track per side.

First spin of the day is another favourite of mine. Is there an audiophile version for this?

Red clay is a classic!

I prefer 33 to 45 nearly always. A longer record where sonics were nerfed for a 1LP cut are good candidates. But I really don't like records with 5-6 minute sides with a single song.

Snagged this Bass on top for $20 on discogs, what a good deal these are. The arco solo in Yesterdays is worth the price of admission.

The blue note order from the spring sale is just hanging out there, they don't seem to be in any hurry to fill these orders.
