I actually really liked Land when I saw it in the theaters but I haven't watched it since. I've been meaning to revisit it. I have not watched Diary or Survival though. They didn't really interest me.

btw I LOVED The Leftovers, event television for me when it aired. Loved it soup to nuts. There's a deep convo to be had but I wouldn't dare step on spoilers for anyone who has yet to watch it. My advice is keep going! I was knocked out by where the series goes, and the finale was incredible.

Awesome, that's very exciting to hear. I would love to discuss it a bit after I finish.

Justice League Snyder Cut. Zach Snyder
Yup this is Snyder's version through and through. Heavy on slow mo, desaturated color, lots of big epic set pieces. Overall it was interesting to watch, weird that it even exists and not really worth most peoples time. I didn't watch the Whedon version, it looked like shit and I had no interest in it. This one while not good, has some stuff worth watching if you're into JL/DC shit. The fight after Super Christ returned from the dead was one of the worst things I've ever seen. But the final fight with Steppenwolf was a lot of fun.

These older horror movies don't impress him much. His only real comment was, "these people aren't very smart". He also brought up that the boy they rescued on the river just disappears. After the scene of the piranha attacking the river raft and they make it back to land he's never seen again. I had to remind him of the type of movie it is. :)

He's not wrong. I mean the fish are smarter than most of these people. That's a funny thing to notice about the kid. I'm just so used to actors wandering in and out of Corman pictures that I barely even notice anymore. Filming probably went long and the kid got in trouble for breaking curfew so he wasn't allowed back the next day or something. I double featured this for years with Humanoids From The Deep and later with Mosquito. I love it.

I'm not sure I've ever seen Mosquito. I'll have to see if that ones on Prime. Humanoids was available a few weeks ago and is on my list to watch (again). There are quite of few of these old movies on prime at the moment but they tend to come and go rather quickly.

We watched Soul last Thursday. I really loved it and found the whole concept very inventive and well thought out. I might buy the score as well at one point. Does the score also have the jazz parts on it?

Now that's a sub! I really would love a bigger sub for my system but unfortunately my wife does not like anything loud. And while I would normally just grab one anyways, we watch 90% of movies together so it would be a wasted investment.

Update on my HBO Max nonsense I posted about a few weeks ago. I decided to get a Roku Premier as it was only $35 and it will allow me to get 4K + Dolby Atmos from the HBO Max app. I got it all set up last night, programmed my remote and did some testing. Works like a charm. Looks and sounds fantastic. I can't wait to watch it this evening!

43. Universal Soldier (1992)



I couldn't wait till next weekend. And if I have to believe Mateo (and I know I should) the UniSols only get better.

This first one is very enjoyable and for me great to see that young JCVD face again. I forgot how I love it when an action movie has some scenes of simply shooting up some buildings. Reminds me I need to watch the mini-gun action in T2 again. Or the newer Rambo's of course :-)
Anyways, Universal Soldier has a lot of shooting and explosions and not as much JCVD kicking. But the diner scene is very fun old school JCVD scene. The Dolf by the way is also brilliant. And the end credits song is Body Count.
This is not top tier JCVD but top half easily.

I don't think I have ever seen the other three UniSols and I am looking forward to watching those in the coming week. I'll wait with ranking these after I have seen them all.

When I started this endeavor I had no idea how much I would end up loving these flicks.

44. Universal Soldier (1999)



Well, this was not what I was expecting. It is only 83 minutes long. And that is a good thing. The first half I did not like it. Too cheesy.
But around the halfway mark I was really enjoying it. It is ridiculous in a lot of ways. You appear to have half the WWF starring. The soundtrack consists of some excellent hard rock and metal (I will be playing that one a lot while trying to get in the same shape as JCVD). The strip bar scene was fantastic.
The iMDB trivia page is wonderful as well.

The strip club scene is filmed at The Clubhouse in Dallas, Texas. The legendary strip club owned by Vinnie Abbott and Dimebag Darrell of the band Pantera.

This is good to know when I watch the next UniSol:

Due to the film's critical and financial failure, subsequent Universal Soldier entries ignore the events of this film and outright contradict it in several ways. While still an official entry, it is no longer considered canon.

All in all an enjoyable watch if you are not in a serious mood.

Godzilla Vs Kong. Dir by Adam Wingard
Well I enjoyed the hell out of this one. It was exactly what I wanted, big knock down fights with Kong & Godzilla, I had a huge shit eating grin on my face during their fights (12 year old me would be freaking the fuck out over this). As with all kaiju movies, there's too much human elements but here they cut the one character I hated the most from King of Monsters, Kyle Chandler. He had maybe 5 minutes of screen time. Unfortunately the side story involving the guy from Atlanta, the girl from Stranger Things and the kid from Hunt for the Wilderpeople, was very flat and not very funny. But the action was a fucking spectacle, looked so good, sound was excellent. I had a blast with the 2 hr film and will probably revisit it before it leaves HBO Max in a month. It's definitely the best out of the three new Godzilla films and on the same level as Skull Island for me.

Also I thought they did such a fun job bringing in the other monsters in the last one that their absence, Mothra especially, felt conspicuous, but overall I had a blast with it.

I do not care for UniSol2. It is all the thing you said it was and less. Typical mid-budget sequel dreck.

The fight leading up to the last fight was quite glorious, the crane distraction in particular was hilarious. I love how clever they made Kong. And while I agree with the last fight not being what I wanted, it did end particularly well.

I have not read any comments about Godzilla Vs Kong because I abhor even the most minute of spoilers, but I'm diving in now. For the record, I expect this to be a CGI-ridden piece of shit on the level of Transformers 9: Robot Dawn (I bet at least one of you looked that up) just like all of the other Godzilla and Kong films of the last thirty years have been with the exception of Skull Island which was shockingly enjoyable.

PS - Adam Wingard looks like the kind of chinless ninny that even other nerds would have stuffed into a locker in high school so I'm conflicted about my alliagences here. Time will tell how I rate this skin husk.

G vs K was not for me. Killed it after 30mins.

On the other hand this netflx doc blew me away last night - incredible story, the less known going in the better. Seems like it is going to get super dark around half way in but fortunately it doesn't. Highly rec'd if you enjoy 'outsider' film stories like The Wolfpack.

The G and KK films made in the digital era have been a total wash for me, like watching someone else playing a video game for two hours. Which I... wouldnt do.

Well Godzilla Vs Kong was much better than I expected it to be. It was still a plotless hodgepodge of interstitial sequences staffed by TV level acting at best where every adult human character is a terrible person exploiting children and monsters in equal measure. It begs the question of who are we supposed to be rooting for here? Everyone in charge or imbued with some other form of power are reprehensible to their core. Every monster fight must kill literally thousands of innocent civilians yet we stand all glassy-eyed and self-congratulatory, thankful for their service and our hand in it all at the end? I will say they didn't hide the CGI monsters in darkness and I could tell who was fighting who the entire time so they get big props for that. Some of the visuals were fun. Now it was still very bad and I did fall asleep during the second Godzilla v Kong battle. And while I probably won't ever go back to find out how they teamed up to defeat RoboZilla, it must be said that it was not nearly as suboptimal as I had presumed it would be going in.

Inks - Fair point made about Godzilla films in the past thirty years. I was hastily referring to these past few American-made versions and the Jean Reno flick. I can't speak to any Japanese or other international productions.
