The directors cut of the second one is the most ambitious disaster ever. I think I’ve spoken about this in here before but it’s a movie I have a hard time dismissing out of hand. It’s a misfire in nearly every moment (save some nice work from Brad Dourif) but god damn if it does WANT to be a masterpiece. Say what you will, Zombie isn’t a lazy filmmaker, the effort is there, the result is just a spectacle

I think this is an excellent way of explaining how I place his films. I've only seen four of them and I wouldn't recommend any of them. But there is real effort there which results in moments of success. If I enjoyed his style of cinema, I don not, I'd be inclined to continue to chase the dragon and see if he ever puts it all together.

Precisely, I want to like his movies so much more than I do, because he is obviously putting a lot of love and care into each of them and on the surface level I’m all there! But they just miss their mark or are just on the other side of nihilistic, grimes, and brutal for me.

Never got around to 3 from hell, I’ve watched lords of Salem twice thinking I’d like it the second time...I was wrong.

I think house of a thousand corpses was mostly pretty fun and it’s likely the only one I’d go back to. Devils rejects featured some fine acting but was too much for me. I like my bill Mosley a little campier (and from interviews, I think he does too)

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure I remember hearing something about House of a 1000 Corpses was highly cut and a lot of the material being lost. I think there was a website that had a different version but I don’t think I looked that hard into it.

Wasn’t Rob Zombie supposed to do a movie based on the Philadelphia Flyers team from 76 or so? I’m pretty sure it would of been a period piece. I thought it would be good for him to do something completely different other than a horror, a nice change of pace could of done him some good.

I picked this up on a whim - DJ Muggs' dark-soaked instrumental soundtrack to the film Dies Occidendum. I don't know anything about the movie, but I dig Muggs so I just grabbed this up when I saw he was working with Sacred Bones on this release.

Record is creepy and sinister sounding. Mixing a lot of obscure dusty sounding samples with piano and drum loops. Sounds like he's combining ingredients of psych & gypsy folk with modern elements of trap. Definitely a unique soundtrack in my collection.

Aside from all that, are you guys aware of the Halloween III theory, that suggests how it directly ties into the rest of the series? I love it, and if I ever feel like watching any of those godawful drekky entries beyond HII it really makes them a lot more fun imagining they are all different Michael-bots each time created by Conal Cochran. It's the little things :D

To be fair to zombie, “What if Laurie was Michael’s sister?” is the second film’s premise and the rest of the series up to the 2018 soft reboot follows that thread. May not have been a great idea all things considered (individual mileage may vary) but it wasnt Zombies. In that instance he was just fooling canon.

First two point stand though, just not the point of the character

Also we need to remember that Weinsteins had their grubby little paws all over those movies. Not saying they would be better than what they are but that was a contributing factor. You know damn well if Harvey said something should be there then it was either there or the movie doesn't exist.

I wonder if Zombie just borrowed themes/plots of Halloween, like Rob Zombie’s vision of a slasher movie instead of doing a remake, would I maybe like it a little more. What if the movie had a different name and the character names were changed, I’m sure It still would of sucked and I would of walked out thinking this is just a poor rip off of Halloween but it wouldn’t be Halloween. Just like 1000 corpses/chainsaw massacre.

Also for me the worst part, what killed it the most is his wife’s shitty acting. Yikes
