16. Double Team (1997)



This was very enjoyable. Great action sequences. But I find it hard to classify. I liked Maximum Risk more. But I also liked every movie in spot 7. So it goes with that bunch. At this point I have seen only 1 bad JCVD movie: Street Fighter. Black Eagle is not a bad movie but I found it to be too boring and JCVD is not the main star. It is going to be very hard to see if I can place other movies somewhere between spots 1 to 7...
The top 6 as it stands now are different enough from each other and all terrific. Everything under 7 are variations of those first 6 I think... Although Cyborg is a class of its own :-)

This is such a cool flick, one of my criterion blind buys whenever it was they put the disc out. I just remember looking at the cast and the director and thinking it would be a slam dunk, and it was.

@Mateo: have you seen all of the JCVD flicks? I managed to get a copy of all of them except for one. And that one has a rating of 7.4 on iMDB ... Full Love (2014). That one sounds like a brilliant movie. I tried looking for it under the different names it was released but cannot find a digital copy. I will find it eventually (or buy it ...).

It looks like I have 44 movies with JCVD in a starring role. So I am 1/3 of the way. Thankfully I have time during the week to watch these. I hope that will remain the case for the next couple of months.

Seagal, Norris, Bronson.... I think I might need to catch my breath after my JCVD run. But who knows. I do love a challenge!

When searching for Full Love it appears it has never been released. It looks like there were a lot of issues with rights. Also some reshoots. No idea. I can cross that one of my list then :-)

It was released in 2010 in Cannes and two critics were not impressed. In 2012 there appear to have been some reshoot according to some site. I doubt this will ever have a normal release.

Bez, I have never seen that film, or heard of it. Probably for all the reasons you fleshed out. Scanning that IMDb, I believe that I have seen every major JCVD role through 2018. I'm not counting cameos and voice roles. Remember, though, that I saw many of these in real time so my views of them might be pretty different than someone packing them all in over a short period. It's a lot easier to enjoy the subtle nuances of DTV flicks when you're not trying to power through your fifth of the weekend.

Any love for Michael Douglas action flicks? I love the likes of Black Rain, Falling Down, The Ghost in the Darkness and the Game to name a few. Just thinking about it I might throw one of these on tonight.

All three fine, fine films. Black Rain is probably my favorite there, but it's a tough call.

Ghost in the darkness is a cool flick but I actually think Douglas might be a little miscast . Actually I think both of them are on the cusp of being a little miscast and I’m not sure Kilmers accent sucks it’s landing so to speak, but I still dig that movie a lot.

Black rain on the other hand is excellent from every angle.

17. Knock Off (1998)



I do not know what to say... But I want that song that is used in the credits on a 12". When looking for it on youtube one of the comments under that video says it best:

The movie goes from stupid to genius once you understand it's actually made to be a knock-off of the HK action movies.

At first I was thinking that one needs to be under the influence of a substance or 12 years old to enjoy this movie. But the action sequences are insane. And the cheese is totally different than in Double Impact.
It is a must see JCVD for sure.

I have no idea where to put this. In the beginning I was really thinking to put this in the one to last spot. Moments later it went up another spot. And by the end is to different and great to be put together with the bunch.

This was very entertaining. I really liked it. Do I like it more than Maximum Risk...It is very close though.

All in all I had a very enjoyable and surprising JCVD afternoon.

I didn't realize so many of JCVD mid to late 90's films were directed by HK vets like Tsui Hark & Ringo Lam. At the time when I watched them I just didn't know who they were, many years later it's fascinating to learn. I need to revisit Knock Off, I have zero recollection of it and seeing it placed in the top 10 means it's time to watch it.

I ended up watching Maximum Risk over the weekend and realized I have actually seen it and just forgot what movie it was. Very good and an incredibly young and attractive Natasha Henstridge.
