I will always look back at Village of the Damned as a missed opportunity. When working on that project I was tasked to sculpt the final alien transformation sequence. It was broken down that I would sculpt three different stage busts of the lead girl Mara into the alien. The first stage (bust above on the left) the forehead starts to change. There is a second stage bust that I can't seem to locate photos of. The above right photo is the final stage alien wich Carpenter really liked. Also I found a test strip from ILM of some early composite shots. The problem is we always thought the alien would be revealed as a stand alone entity. In the end it was only just a composite shot over the actresses real face. So for me it was kind of a disappointment that they never showed the finished puppet. It was mechanized extremely well. These types of situations happen often and I was already used to it. The recent soundtrack release has kind of rekindled that early excitement about the film and it is cool to see people spinning it. Can't wait to get a copy.
Great stuff Evan, thanks as ever for sharing your experiences and artistry. Stunning work here.
Slightly irritatingly for you, the choice of full-face image on the ost rear sleeve will only continue to remind you of your disappointment I'm afraid :(

This change-o sequence reminds me of the Stan Winston (I believe?) gag from Starman - have you ever visited the Museum of Moving Image in Astoria/Queens? It blew my mind, they had a ton of original fx there (Blade Runner/Tyrell Corp model, Dick Smith's Exorcist '180 head-turn' puppet!) and the series of around ten different Starman heads which were used in the boy-to-adult transformation sequence. Fuck, I was in that place for the best part of a whole day haha!
Here's the pics anyway - I recall this sequence was complex and involved more than one artist actually now I think about it, but pretty sure Winston was involved

Scott thanks brother. Yeah I got over the disappointment real quick because of how often this stuff goes another way. I will always appreciate that thought from you when I view the lp back cover :)

I have been to that museum twice. It looks like they updated with cleaner busts cause those pics look really good. I know the scene you speak of well. That is only a small fraction of the busts for that few second scene. If my memory is correct they made about 100 busts for replacement animation...wich is almost crazy to do. So much work for few seconds. Yes Rick Baker, Stan Winston and Dick Smith each handling a part of the scene.

100 busts! Goddam... can you imagine how they'd approach this effect in a science fiction flick today? About half a day's work for a single spotty CG droid in the corner of an fx house ;)

Just arrived and hitting the Red Baron!

Looks and sounds incredible as you'd expect from MOV - those Dutch fellas know their onions :)

Obviously like a lot of you I'm really pleased to get this score with the fantastic OG sleeve art - I also have the Dagored release, and what do you know: different tracklisting!

At first glance it looks like there are some bonus alt takes on the DR, but I will have a listen through both this morning to decide whether I need to hold onto both versions. Anyone interested in a little Comparison Corner action, let me know!

*EDIT* Oh right then - turns out the red vinyl Dagored release is the complete score with bonus cues, and the MOV release is reissue of the shorter original RCA/Intermezzo album presentation. I'm still going to do a comparison I think, and work out if there is entirely diff material overall, esp if there's stuff whihc is unique to the RCA/MOV :) Also, judging by Discogs it also looks like the DR goes for about a hundred bucks these days and is likely to keep it's value since it's expanded - so that's groovy!

They are tits. Or The Tits, depending on your regional preference ;) I suspect MOV use Optimal or MPO, they continue to put many other reissue labels to shame tbh

Today's other new arrival, snagged at bargain price from the Varese flash sale. In stark contrast to the dark, psychological magic of Morricone - 30secs in and huge smile on my face!

I went to that museum once as a kid on a field trip and it’s frankly absurd that I haven’t gone back. When things lift here a bit I’m planning on hitting up a lot of thE NY museum scene I’ve neglected over the years, you get used to the access and don’t even think about it. Hoping to never take that access for granted again.

Scott you sent me on a quick search about that scene in Starman....it was actually 140 full busts for few seconds of film. Dick Smith was a genius but damn what was he thinking with that concept.

Yep it's nuts alright. Having admitted that... it's an effect with a completely weird, distinctive feel to it that even as a kid I was like, 'there's something really odd going on here!'

Thanks for the Dick Smith/Baker update- yeah I thought that Winston was also involved. Starman was a movie (along with Christine) that I watched endlessly back then. The stories, filmmaking, casts, scores..... all added up to *chefs kiss* for me in my formative years.

Scott you are not wrong. Rick baker did the alien baby part , Stan Winston did the boys torso stretching stuff and Dick did these heads. It did have a weird look..almost like blurry gasoline vapors in front of it.
