Just finished the movie “Come and See”. Pretty crazy film

Big budget Korean sci-fi. This one was really fun. It feels different than American sci-fi, by that I mean that even with it's serious stakes, it's not afraid to let characters be fun and witty with each other. Everything doesn't have to be super serious. Basically a rag tag group of space junk collectors stumble across a child that may be a hydrogen bomb. Two factions are after her and the crew goes from trying to make a quick buck by selling her to realizing bigger things are at stake. The relationships through out grow and turn into some nice little moments sprinkled through out. Space battles are big and a ton of fun. Some cool set pieces through out. And a very enjoyable cast. I will admit the film is a little too long but there was never really a dull moment. I recommend it.


I haven't seen this since it came out over 10 years ago. I remember enjoying it but I didn't remember anything outside of cool animation. Well I watched it in HD this time and boy does that animation hold up, from Madhouse who are responsible for tons of great anime TV and movies over the last 30 years really deliver on this one. I watched the dub due to having to do some work while watching it but it's a really good dub so I can't complain, there were a few similar voices and upon looking them up was surprised to see some of the bigger voice actors for anime dubs were doing work 10 years ago and I was just unaware of them. If you want to watch a really fun incredibly animated racing film, watch this. I believe it's on Amazon Prime right now.

This film was released under one of five titles, depending on the country it was released in. It was released under the names 'Lionheart', 'Full Contact', 'A.W.O.L Absent Without Leave', 'Wrong Bet,' and 'Leon '. The film was independently funded and so was sold to various distributors throughout the world. It is therefore assumed they just picked the title that had the most impact in their respective territories.

I am placing it between Cyborg and Kickboxer for the moment. However everything behind Cyborg is very close together and are very different from each other.

For any one who did not order the big Dawn of the Dead UHD boxset from Second Sight last year, they are releasing a slimmed down version at a lower cost. I just grabbed a copy from Diabolikdvd for $43 which isn't bad for a 4 disc set.

I'm struggling with this because i just don't know if it will ever get a US release, just sucks to not be able to play the special features. but also thats a stupid reason not to get. decisions decisions

Also the main special feature is Document of the Dead which i have.

For me it's completely worth to just pick it up at that price for UHD's. I have a region free bluray player (they can be had for $120-$150) but I most likely will only watch the film and it's various cuts. So while the special features are nice I may only watch them once if ever. I can guarantee that if it's released in the US it will be expensive just to recoup the cost of licensing it.

My last few Shudder viewings:. Boar, Luz, Cub (Welp), and The Beach House, along with some older giallo I had not seen yet. The Beach House was interesting in where they kept the level of tension throughout the film, recommended. Boar was a good laugh. I love a big monster movie. Luz was weird af.

Regarding the film club, it seems difficult to keep interest going here. I remember trying to use polls for dates and hype adverts but sometimes it was still just two people showing up. Still willing to stick with it and keep trying though.

Luz was the perfect level of weird for me. Definitely not for everyone though. Nice to see others check out The Beach House, was quite a surprise last year when I watched it. I couldn't get into Boar, I do enjoy big monster movies but holy hell did the characters bother me in that one. There's been a handful of new Shudder flicks I've been meaning to check out but I just haven't had a ton of time for films due to our consumption of Schitt's Creek over the last few weeks. We are already half way through season 4.

Damn Bez you went a tare today. Cyborg at the second spot eh.(so far). I think it’s time for a rewatch for me. I’m curious to see how your list unfolds after the next couple. Double Impact is pretty sweet. I wonder if anything will take bloodsport out of the number one slot? I guess time will tell.

I second this, for the longest time I was hesitant about getting a region free bluray player. After my last player crapped out I decided to go for it. I didn’t want to get a 4K player as my tv isn’t 4K so I decided to go for a region free player now the world is my oyster.

Endlessly quotable yet criminally unknown for some reason. Not entirely, but It does not have the status it should, maybe a top 10 comedy for me, definitely a top 20.

Also an underrated Elfman score....that harmonica

Was this in 89-91? The one film where he plays a crazy religious person that comes to mind is The Pit and the Pendulum which came out in 91.

inksb thanks for bringing some clarity to my memory. Pit and the Pendulum is the film I was thinking of (Lance in top maniacal form) but because of the date...can't be. You sent me on a quick search and it was around 1995 he got married to the women. So it could not have been pit. All I remember is he was in Rome filming something as I was creeping thru his pad. I also remember Lance came into the shop for the film Quick and the Dead. I believe we cast his hand for some effect. He was smaller in person than you would think but impressively shredded and lean. Now thinking about it I sculpted a fake forehead appliance for a bullet hit effect on that film. I don't remember for what actor and to this day have not seen the movie.

Are you saying you’ve never watched The Quick and the Dead? I’m a sucker for anything Sam Raimi. Did you get to work with him at all? Seems like he would be a good dude to hang and shoot the shit with. Also just curious working in the industry does watching movies become old hat? I know for me in my industry working in a factory I’m just use to the process but when a visitor would come in and you can see they are in awe and they have all these questions and you can see they’re genuinely interested you can almost forget how unique your job is.

Pete apologies for the late reply. Yeah never got a chance to see The Quick and the Dead...I remember hearing good things about it. As far as working with Raimi...never on set. All thru the 90's Robert and Sam produced a bunch of TV and films so they would come into the shop frequently. Other then the most casual Hi and Hello that was about the extent of my contact. Although I did go to a wedding for and old boss that Rob and Sam were at. Another one of those bizarre moments looking over at the next table and seeing Sam eating fish cakes. I remember his hair was all @ucked up like he just rolled out of bed. I think one of the first things I worked on when I got to LA was the tv show Hercules that went on for years...also Darkman 2 & 3 and a little bit on a show called Mantis all produced by Rob and Sam. When they did a simply plan, it was just a fake head of a dead pilot in the studio...but another artist handled that sculpture. Yes it does become old hat like any regular job (wich I have had several over the years).
It actually can be more destructive than regular work if you have purely true, artistic aspirations but that is a whole other book. It's a real meat grinder. I will do a bunch of years in and out of the business to keep my sanity and artistic lifeforce intact. I have been away for a couple years now but will go back next year depending on certain outside factors.

@evan, Literally just watched Quick and The Dead, the actor you probably did the forehead effect for was Jonothon Gill as Spotted Horse, that’s the only visible forehead shot in the film (I was looking after you mentioned it)

I think you nailed it when it comes to doing anything for a living that involves your particular art. I was saying this about writing in another thread, it’s great to be able to use your artistic side professionally, but oh man is the burnout real. Having once had an idea to really hone my sculpting skills and go into your line when I was in high school I can only imagine what a balancing act it is.

Pete absolutely fair question. There has been a handful of things I've have worked on that I still have have not seen. I think that The Quick and the Dead situation was more because I was not really designated to work on that film in the shop but it was a quick hand off to me as I was on another assignment. Like oh can you quickly sculpt this forehead appliance for a few days. So probably because my contribution was so limited, I never really pursued it. Now that you say that scene came off nicely, I shall. Also you are not wrong in your assumptions of leaving work behind. Once the work day is over I don't want to think of that world at all. All film viewing on my time has nothing to do with my history. Funny you bring up this topic as of just two weeks ago I ordered from Amazon two really low budget films I worked on years ago....so I am starting to track down stuff.

5 I think, only saw that one once. When it comes to DW, the first 3 are great and then it’s a STEEP drop for me. Michael Winner is tough to beat for that sort of grim affair.

Bronson is just so much fun to watch, screen presence you just don’t see too much anymore, he’s magnetic. You can see it in his supporting roles in the 50s and 60s, just itching to take the lead.

I’m a huge Elmore Leonard fan so I come back to Majestyk a lot, and he really just feels like a Leonard character come to life.

I did a double feature of breakheart pass and red sun at the very beginning of the pandemic.
