The release of the new clipping album on Sub Pop was announced a while back, and it turns out that side 4 of the vinyl consists of 100 locked grooves, each with its own looping beat.

Needless to say, I'm tempted to buy it for that alone. Any other particularly crazy gimmicks you guys have come across in the past?

Lee Ranaldo - From Here to Infinity. Still one of my favourites, with etched Savage Pencil "Ouroboros" snake/dragon-eating-it's-tail design and mostly locked grooves. I would have thought it was more collectable really, but goes for pretty cheap on Discogs:

I have this from when I was a Britpop-loving teenager, that has two grooves on the A side; you get a different song depending on where you start the needle.



Also, I don't own this but it's pretty cool, where everything is 'reversed', from the music, to the sleeve text, to the sleeve material, to the vinyl playing from the inside out:

If you're a fan of Sonic Youth you won't be disappointed - although this is far from melodic, more Melvins'ey fuzz drones/harsh noise with great infinite looping drones. I fucking love it!! (have done since i was a massive SY nut in my mid teens...)

I have this "Saigon" 7" by Martha and the Muffins (of "Echo Beach" fame...)
which has a B-side with a split groove - you either get the track "Copacabana" or the same track...in reverse!! Awesomeness.

I can't believe I didn't think of this initially, I guess I just never saw it as a gimmick. Dreamend (one of my favourite bands) released their two connected albums "So I Ate Myself, Bite By Bite" & "And The Tears Washed Me, Wave By Cowardly Wave" as animated picture discs. They both feature gorgeous art by William Schaff on the A side that acts as a phenakistoscope, an old Victorian animation machine.

before clicking, I was all excited for an LP filled with the sounds of skateboarding. the rumbling, scraping, rolling sounds of skateboarding need to be put on wax, where is the label for this kind of a release?

It's tricky to get a decent photo of it (will try in daylight tomorrow, but the 12" of the Screaming Trees' Something About Today EP has an "etched" B-side that consists of vague scribbling and a drawn-around hand.
Which sums up 1990 rather well.

Funnily enough, when I was about 13 I bought the 7" of Therapy?'s Stories purely because it was on orange vinyl. Now, 18 years later, they're still my all time favourite band.

Ha, I just asked Spencer about laser etching the other day after I put my Split Enz "True Colours" album on. I thought that was the only laser etched record they released but apparently one of the singles from their "Waiata" album came out as an etched 7" so I'll have to track it down someday.

The last few years the band The Marshmallow Ghosts have been putting out an album every year on Halloween. Last year's was a fantastic 10" limited to 666 copies, in six different colourways, each colour designed after a fall treat: Franken Berry, Count Chocula, Fruity Yummy Mummy etc. Graveface Records does some of the most fantastic colourways, always complementing the art of the overall package superbly.

The band I mentioned above that did the animated picture disc (another Graveface release) also released an album in a gatefold that opened to reveal a complex pop-up diorama. Each copy apparently took 45 minutes to carefully assemble by hand. It's a packaging gimmick rather that a vinyl one but dear god it is beautiful.
