I loved Patlabor! I first saw it around 2000 (maybe a couple of years earlier) on the BBC. Jonathon Ross had a great film program where he showed animes.
Later I bought Patlabor 1 and 2 on DVD.

WHAT IS THIS POSTER?!?!? Seriously, I was laughing my ass off when I found this and realized it's a real poster for the film. Tequila never wears that outfit during the hospital scene and the baby is wrapped in a blanket the whole time. So ridiculous. I've seen this film a bunch, always loved it but it's been quite a few years and the wife had never seen it. It's a classic Woo film but I'm pretty sure I prefer The Killer over it. It needs new scan and bluray though, the one I watched was terrible, it only looked slightly better than my old DVD copy.


Another entry in the Hulu/Blumhouse show Into the Dark. The only thing I knew about this one was that Barbara Crampton was in it which means I'll watch. She was great, pretty creepy in her role but she's a side character. I won't really go into detail on this one as it will reveal what's happening pretty quickly. It was decent, if you are looking to kill an hour and half and have a Hulu subscription it's worth a watch. I do think one about the serial killer was the best one of the series so far so if you haven't watched any of them then check that one out first.

As consolation for the apparently disappointing anime doc on Netflix (I've Not seen it but it's had lots of bad reviews from anime heads) this is a Japanese, made for an international audience, documentary about the making of the first series of Gundamn. They even mention the Vinyl BGM OST release. Features a lot of the original team behind its creation. Really great stuff

I started DC's Swamp Thing which I had heard lots of good stuff about, first episode was not great, I'll give it a few more before I stop.

Also started The Boys and that is highly entertaining. It's way more fucked up than I expected it to be.

The wife and I finished The Boys last night. What a great series, I had zero interest in this until I saw a few in here talking about it. It's fun deconstruction of Superheroes (and the most accurate depiction of what they would be like in real life). This show fully commits to a lot of it's fucked up ideas. That whole Pop-Claw climax scene left me with my mouth open, I couldn't believe I saw that on "TV". There was one moment in the middle of the series that I said out loud "HOLY FUCK!" which then the Butcher said himself and made both me and wife burst out laughing. It's a good time and I really look forward to what they have in store with S2. Have any of you read the comics? Are they worth checking out? I know Ennis is great writer but I just haven't heard much of this one over the years.



I finished Part 4 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure over the weekend, Diamond is Unbreakable. It's the best season so far (although I've been told Part 5 is better). The characters were a lot of fun, the main antagonist was quite different than the "destroy the world" type bad guy you see in shows like this. He's a quiet reserved man who happens to be a serial killer but doesn't want to be disturbed, he lives a normal life and tries to avoid people. He only kills when his urges bubble over. It's an interesting story and quite different than the previous 3 parts.

We finished the YouTube series Impulse last night as S1 is free to view while they build up to S2, which we are happy to wait until it’s free to view also. It’s well made for sure, enjoyable at times but suffers from several filler episodes where everyone pouts around looking sad. But when the plot suddenly lurches into life it’s actually excellent. “We’ve got 20 pages of scenes we can’t use, let’s make an entire episode from them and I’ll see you in the bar for shots”. It’s also the first YouTube Original I’ve seen, in the ever expanding Big Bang of tv platforms filled with stuff nobody will watch. It’s the same as broadcast TV, hundreds of channels of crap nobody wants, sprinkled with gems.

Yeah it's on Hulu, I don't think anywhere else but it's exclusive to them in the US at least. They are pretty easy to find online if you download TV shows at all.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I've seen a handful of those films and really enjoy them. I have even more on that list that in the queue, just need to find the time. I've always wanted to see Eyes of Fire but that's been stuck on VHS. The DVD that was released was just a VHS rip put on DVD. Unfortunately it is stuck with Lionsgate and they really don't show movies like that any love and don't let companies like Arrow or Scream Factory license stuff either.

Dagon is a ridiculously underseen/underrated Gordon-Lovecraft flick- really got under my skin for days, love it. Fantastic Carles Cases score too.

Agreed Bez - and I know it's a really good horror flick when I can entirely forgive cheap-ass CGI in the finale :)

I had a bit of a catch up with the films of Robert Harmon this morning (he of The Hitcher fame...)

Realised I had only ever seen his excellent early short China Lake (with the amazing Charles Napier) and his just-about watchable Van Damme filler Nowhere to Run.

Started off with Highwaymen which is an entirely forgettable battle-of-wits-between-killer-and-victim flick (very similar to The Hitcher in many ways, but, you know... not good) with Jim Cavezial. It did have a really interesting Mark Isham score though.

But the real find was a Dimension monster movie from '02 that I'd never even heard of, THEY. (or, 'Wes Craven Presents THEY', for some reason. Probably just a marketing gimmick.)

And it was definitely worth the watch. Some of the performances were bland beyond belief (and horribly written to be fair) but the lead actress was very engaging if limited, and it has two real trump cards sneakily up it's sleeve if you stay til the finish: there's an actually very solid suspense set piece climax set in that old favourite, subway tunnels (I know right? A-yawn - it really reminded me of Mimic in lots of ways, especially this aspect) but then to top it off, it springs one of the bleakest climaxes to a major horror film that I have seen in a long time. Maybe I was just hungry for something (anything) to rise above average in the movie, but it's final shots really came out of nowhere for me and had me exclaiming loudly 'holy fuck nuts!'

I recommend it for a low-expectation early-2000s horror watch (you know what you're getting into with Dimension from that period..)

I'm a fan of Dagon as well. My only two real issues with the film are it's color grading is just too blue (minor complaint, I know what Stuart was going for) and the lead actor, he's just not good. I know the film would have never been made if it hadn't been for Yuzna's Spanish deal but this film could have been so much better if Stuart actually made in the late 80's/early 90's like wanted to.
