Lot's of movies for me yesterday.


The Seventh Curse directed by Ngai Choi Lam who also is responsible for bringing us the glorious Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. This on was brought to my attention by a podcast, the film is currently on Amazon Prime in US. It's a gem, I wish I had known about it before, it's ridiculous in all the right ways, fantastic gag effects, a bat shit insane plot and Chow Yun Fat & Maggie Cheung. The basic story for the film is the main character has been blood cursed, he has 7 days to find the Shaman that bewitched him to stop his death. The film is broken into three sections, section 1 which serves as an introduction to the characters plays out like a cop action film, the main character shows the first sign of the curse, section 2 is the back story of how he came to be cursed one year prior in a very Indiana Jones type flashback, followed by section 3 which is tracking down the tribe & shamen for a final showdown. Oh and one last thing I forgot to mention, the shaman just happens to have a Brain Damage/Aylmer thing he throws at people who eats, stabs and rips apart what ever it falls on. I loved this film. If you like absurd gore gag filled Japanese cinema give this a shot.


This is one of those J-horror films I always wanted to see when they were hitting it big in the early to mid 00's but I never found a copy. It just showed up on Shudder recently. It's a great "found footage" film about demon possession. I really enjoyed it even though it's a touch long. I'm not a big fan of found footage but this is definitely one of the best and I will revisit the film again in the future which I can't say for most of the genre.


Not much to say about this one other than I thoroughly enjoyed it, it's extremely self indulgent from a filmmakers standpoint but for a film that moves at a snails pace for it's 160min run time I was fully engaged. The acting is great from every one, I was quite happy to see the one and only Udo Kier show up for a scene. This is not a film for every one but I feel like if you enjoy Zahler's previous films then this one should work for you.

I don't have access to most of the movies you put up here, I wish I did. But the Japanese horror film on Shudder, once I figured out what the title was, I've added to my list and can't wait to check out...it looks incredible. I now wish they had a simple way to sort their foriegn films by language, region, etc....!

My bad for not putting the title to Noroi: The Curse, I just realized after your comment I didn't use the poster with the English title. What country are you in? Assuming it's not the US. A majority of the movies I watch and post about here I actually buy the discs, I usually only call out the ones that are available for streaming in my region. Dragged Across Concrete I bought the bluray, although Amazon has picked up the digital streaming rights to Zahler's previous two films so I expect the same with that one eventually.

Oh, no worries at all! I actually enjoyed the search and found a few additional titles I was interested in....I'm in the US as well, just budget wise I'm squarely in the strictly streaming and library demographic these days. I saw the Dragged Across Concrete was out either this week or next on DVD, I'll definitely be checking it out....

Mercy Black. Directed by Owen Egerton. This was a fun urban legend/creepy pasta type film. The main character kills a girl when she's a child based on a "ghost story/legend" she was told to beleive in. After spending 15 years in a psych home she is released, she returns home to stay with her sister only to find out that the story she was told as a child has become an internet urban legend and it may or may not actually be real. I was really worried as the final act started that they were going to go in a very generic direction for this type of movie and I was quite happy with it's resolution. This is streaming on Netflix in the US.



All That We Destroy. Directed by Chelsea Stardust. Released on Hulu through their Into the Dark series. I haven't watched all of the films in this series but out of the few I've seen this is by far the best. The story was great and fascinating, the budget was definitely limited but it really didn't hinder the movie too much. The basic set up is a mother lives in the middle of nowhere with her strange son, who is a budding serial killer. It is set in the near future, the mother is a geneticist who developed technology to clone organs. After she discovers that her son has finally killed a human, she decides to clone that person over and over again, studying her son and trying to rid him of the desire to kill people. Which he continues to kill this clone over and over. That's about the first 15 minutes of the film. I recommend checking it out if you have a Hulu sub

How did you like it? I remember that one fondly, had it on DVD some years ago and found it very entertaining.

I'm curious as well to hear what you thought @bez. Violent Naples is often listed as one of the best in the genre.

It is a lot of fun. Second poliziottesco starring Maurizio Merli. Who looks a lot like the more popular Franco Nero. It is the best of the Commissario Betti trilogy. But Roma Violenta is a very close second.
I still have 12 Maurizio Merli movies to see this year, but I don't think they will top these two. Next week I'll watch Umberto Lenzi's Roma a mano armata and that should be in the same league.

So this was alright. Zac does a pretty good job with the material. I was expecting something different from the film. It's about Ted Bundy, you would figure we'd see some of his killings but instead they chose to focus on his relationship with the woman in his life that he didn't kill, his life on the run and his courtroom appearances. It was probably to keep it a little classier and not drag up awful images for the families that are still effected. I think my favorite part was the during the trial with Malcovich as the judge, their banter was great. Worth a watch but I can't give it a super high recommendation as it in the end the film didn't do much for me and just serves a good vehicle to show that Effron isn't just a roided out bro.

Brightburn is wildly predictable and disappointing. You'll be two steps ahead of it/the characters all the way, and the script is thuddingly generic/on the nose. Not helped at all by the fact that the trailers have told you everything. It never has a single idea to add beyond it's high-concept premise.

It's so mediocre, I'm actually shocked that it wasn't retro-actively folded into the Cloverfield Universe somehow, since that's now the repository for failed genre flicks ;)

It will probably convince a few people of it's merit though, due to a few gory set-pieces.

I loved JW 1. JW 2 I liked but not as much as 1. Looking forward to JW 3!

Yesterday I watched Prisoners (2013) for the first time. Very nice thriller. Wolverine was really good in it.

Today I watched another Umberto Lenzi/Mauricio Merli gem. Not as good as Napoli Violenta but close.
