The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has returned, I watched the first two episodes yesterday and enjoyed both of them. I have been slowly watching Love Death Robots which might be the most cringe inducing series I've seen on Netflix. The first half of the series has been terrible, it's like they let 16 boys write the scripts, "oh man boobs! yeah put boobs in there, say fuck, YEAH! they said fuck! quick put a penis in there, ha! they let us put a penis in there hahaha" It seems in the second half of the season that nonsense is cooling off and we are getting some more interesting and better written stories. There is one in particular that really irritated me, the Dracula one, it had a fun and interesting concept and was completely ruined by amateurish dialog.
An interesting sequel, I wasn't really expecting it go in the direction it went and I applaud them for just not making the same movie again. The problem lies in the two leads of the film, neither of them are captivating or entertaining to watch. I'd say it's worth a watch but don't go in expecting anything as good as the first. The HD transfer that is on the Arrow bluray boxset is pretty good, it's not as good as The Ring but still a good upgrade over the previous versions.
I finally convinced my wife to go to the theaters with me (she's getting her masters degree while working full time so she has limited free time). We were torn between seeing Us and Pet Semetary but since PS just released this weekend I figured we might have more time to see that one on the big screen in the coming weeks. I really loved the film, it had a lot more humor than I expected, the casting of Tim Heidecker and Elizabeth Moss was a surprise and quite funny. The film is not perfect but it is incredibly entertaining. The score really elevates many moments, I don't know if I'll ever buy the score as it doesn't feel like one I'd listen to on a day to day basis but it was quite impressive in the context of the film. The main cast was fantastic, Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke were extremely convincing in their respective roles. The little moments between them and their kids, the little eye rolls, muted reactions, felt so natural. I know there are major issues with the logic in the film but it's just that, it's not real life. In the end it felt like a really great twilight zone episode coupled with a great home invasion film. I also loved the split diopter, even though the content of that scene seems to have bothered a lot of people who didn't want an explanation, I just always get excited when I see one. It's too fresh to make any judgement on it compared to Get Out but I am very excited that we have such a strong new and refreshing voice in "bigger" budget horror.
