I have no clue if the image they posted for the Hauntlove cover is actually what will be on there but I wasn't digging that pic on bandcamp so I went with the standard edition. I cruised through the album about 3 times this afternoon. It's pretty damn good.

After regretting not getting the Hauntlove covers for the two Slasher Film Fest albums (especially Crimson Throne...I'm a sucker for skulls in spacesuits) I spent the extra $$$ to get the Hauntlove edition for the Broken Lamps LP. I bought the cassette EP/demo/album thing a few months ago from Broken Lamps and it was great. Haven't heard anything from this latest release but I'm pretty sure it will be super chill.

I think I have the two haunt love covers and was bummed because they aren't full sleeves. Just a front and back, no bottom or top, so essentially a large foleded print with a record inside. The art is great though.

Update on the repress of the Sacred Bones Halloween 'Art' edition. I've noticed them appearing through normal retail (Rough Trade UK, even Amazon). Release date in about 3 weeks.

Without the threat of Customs charges, I'm very pleased to be picking this version up at last.

- VS is doing a 180g reissue of Vertigo, remastered from original tapes. Supposed to drop 3/22.

- Sylotone is doing a super deluxe Marnie reissue, due 4/26.

I preordered Marnie from edsawesomesounds (seemed to be cheaper than anywhere else) and I lamely pre-ordered Vertigo from Amazon because it seemed to be one of the few places that had a pre-order option (at least in december when I pre-ordered).

I might add, I emailed one of the guys who runs Stylotone last year, and he told me that the label has been very busy. He also confirmed for me that the Psycho 7” was indeed from the master tapes (I can tell it’s the same performance as the original but it suuuuuure sounds different than what we hear in the film, in terms of reverb/soundstage).

So they obviously have the Psycho tapes and my guess would be that they’re going to release a full LP next year for Psycho’s 60th Anniversary.

also, it seems really hard to believe that Psycho is a 60-year-old film.

I really need to add to my sorely-lacking Herrmann collection. I picked up the Twisted Nerve 7" from Stylotone, but did not throw down for the whole album as I find their LP's to be quite expensive. I just saw that Marnie is $50 USD at Ed's, yikes. Hoping the Vertigo reissue will be much less than that. I appreciate properly licensing the material from the estate and also all the effort that goes into restoring these from tape, but it's still an expensive album.

I have a fairly complete and ridiculous Herrmann collection. I need to do some comparisons because I have multiple versions of many of his scores.

They’re claiming Vertigo is pretty nice-sounding. Not a comprehensive release, but much cheaper than Marnie.

I got that deluxe Twisted Nerve and it’s great, but I admit that I just waited and waited until someone was basically giving it away on discogs. I think I got it for around $30.

As far as Vertigo goes, I haven’t heard the original mono LP (or the ‘76 Japanese repress of that), but I’ve gone through a bunch of other versions and the best one I’ve heard is the ‘77 “Golden Imports” version from the Netherlands.
From what I understand, it’s the original stereo mixes on there. Sure sounds like that to me, as well. Mine is a little noisy but I probably need to clean it.

I’m still excited to get a new version, though.

I have the black Psycho 7” also and I was sort of on the fence about it at first. I hate pretty much every other recording of this score that isn’t what’s in the film. The film version seems to have a small soundstage reverb or something (I always assumed it was the natural hall) and it’s been all compressed to hell and you can really hear how ferociously the musicians are playing. I just love that original recording and nothing else has come close to being as exciting for me to listen to.

I asked the guy why there’s no reverb on the 7” (it definitely sounds like the original performance but it is soooooo dry).
he said that the “perception of reverb on the film’s soundtrack is (primarily) the result of an unfortunate chemical process affecting the theatrical elements held by the studio”.

@havershaw wow so I guess what’s happened is the corruption in the theatrical masters has created additional harmonics. Without knowing exactly what the corruption was it can’t be recreated. I was literally reading about this today, in the 60s you could easily find ten large transformers in the recording path which made all sorts of unquantifiable harmonic changes. Unpicking that process is impossible

While it’s true that were a lot of transformers in the audio path during that period, I don’t think that’s what he’s talking about.
When he says it’s a chemical process affecting the elements held by the studio, I think it’s something that’s happened to the actual physical elements (the tape or film the score was committed to).
I know a lot about what happens to magnetic recording tape over time, but not much about film.
The Psycho we’ve been hearing on various bootlegs (which is the isolated score from that laserdisc) likely comes from the optical audio track on the film itself (like the newest Mondo Halloween) release.
My guess is, over time, the film print has aged poorly and there’s maybe been a chemical degradation of the actual optical audio track?

(I really really don’t know much about physical filmstock, so apologies if I’m mauling this explanation.)

I agree that the Dutch release is currently the one for me, though my copy is super crusty so definitely in the market for an upgrade. Fingers crossed it's well handled/pressed.

While I was typing this, I checked on the track list one more time to make sure that it was the same as the Dutch, and according to the link above, it is.
But I also checked on amazon, and it’s listed as being two discs on there. If it is, then it must be a more complete score than we’ve ever had on vinyl!
(it’s also cheaper on amazon - but it’s still close to $30, which, for VS, is consistent with 2xLP pricing for them, I think?)
