Regarding Eraserhead. I bought the DVD in the early 2000's I believe. I thought I had watched it back then, but apparently I did not. I think I kept postponing a viewing because I knew it was going to be something else. So last night was my first immersion into that strange world. A restored version (I assume the same as the Criterion Blu-Ray from 2014) with exceptional audio quality.
Although I find it hard to understand what it is all about it was an absolute treat to see it on a big screen. Afterwards I was reading up on all the symbolism and themes people think it revolves around. For me it does not matter. I did not expect that is has never been made clear how the baby is created. That little creature appears very real.
In the David Lynch exhibit you get to see matchbook sketches he made around the time he was filming Eraserhead. Apparently he used whatever was around to sketch and draw during shooting periods. Those matchbooks are very special. Looking at Eraserhead you do see recurring things like the tree in the pile of dirt next to Henry's bed.

Illang The Wolf Brigade



Kim Jee-woon's live action adaption of Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. So I watched Jin-Roh well over a decade ago after being told it's one of the best anime films ever by lots of people. A friend and I spent a lot to get a copy and sat down only be disappointed. I'm sure if I revisited it now I'd probably appreciate it more but at the time I felt like I wasted time and money on it. This new film takes elements of the original and adds some Korean flair to it. I really liked this, it probably won't be for every one but it kept my attention, had great action sequences, the cool armor from the anime recreated with incredible detail and glowing red eyes! The movie is a little long and you can get lost easily if you look away for a second (I hate when my phone goes off during movies) so I had to rewind a few times to catch what I missed. The cinematography is quite beautiful, most of it takes place at night but it's so well lit, with nice bits of neon and it never feels like they shot it in day time and just graded it teal/grey to make it look like night time. I would say if you are a fan of the director or Korean action films you should definitely give this a watch. Like I said I don't remember the original anime so I can't say how close or far from the story it deviated but either way it's a great action film even if it's a bit long winded in it's run time.

@Bez - I enjoyed reading about your experience. It is interesting to me that you just viewed the film for the first time. My first viewing was a strange one... I was dating a girl and on my first visit to her home she popped Eraserhead into the VCR for us to watch. Make of that what you will.

@inks - I appreciate the info on Jin-Roh. I was also underwhelmed by the anime many years ago, but I do remember that the art design was interesting. I will probably check out the live action film.

No problem @deaf, I hope others like it. I used to be really into Korean cinema about a decade or so ago and I've fallen off, I know there has been a ton of great stuff released since I stopped keeping on top of it but I've only caught stuff from my favorite directors (Chan Wook Park, Kim Jee-woon, Bong Joon-ho, Hong-jin Na) and other stuff that's bubbled up into US market.

What I make of it, sir, is... my kind of gal!! ;)

I have a pair of friends who went on a first date to the flicks, and he chose Eraserhead. She lasted about 10 minutes and walked out... but waited in the lobby for him/the film to finish. I've always thought that to be so sweet. And they did keep seeing each other for a good while after that, so obviously no lasting damage was done! There are a few of us who still chuckle about his movie choice for that date, knowing her (and how no-nonsense she is) as we do. It was a bold choice.

Agreed... I saw it on something like a 25" TV with an internal speaker, and it was almost certainly a multi-generation dub from an old VHS tape. Hard to imagine seeing a modern 2k/4k scan in a digital theatre with the latest surround mix for the first time...

I'm in the same boat with Eraserhead, I watched it on 27" CRT on some old beat up VHS from the local video shop. I'm not sure how the film would even look all these years later cleaned up and pristine from a new scan. Eraserhead has always been an experience to me and one I'm not willing to take a second time. I love Lynch and I have watched all of his films multiple times except that one. I actually watched that film with my girlfriend at her parents house, she liked it and stuck around, now my wife.


Any one who has Shudder should check this film out immediately. It's surprisingly creepy, very minimal jump scares and builds tons of dread. Basically a family lose their mother, their father needs to go find a way to make money and leaves the children and grandmother alone in the house for days. The oldest daughter is in her early 20's and takes care of the family with the youngest child around 4-5 and is deaf. Weird ghostly things begin happening and it goes from there. I really enjoyed this one a lot.

I saw Satan's Slaves at the Fantasia Festival in the summer. It's a cool flick, very classical horror (in a good way) with some genuinely great setups. it's a remake from the movie of 1982 with the same title, Pengabdi Setan, which was a bit more silly, slow, low budget movie, but with very cool zombie design :

One of my favorite moments of the entire film was the two little boys in their beds, the deaf one rolls over sees his sleeping brother on the other side of the room signing "I'm going to kill you or I want you dead" (something to that effect). Just imagining seeing your brother signing that to you in the middle of the night is terrifying.

Woah... those are dangerously close to Lynch finally admitting that he created the little fella. Until now he has famously been extremely tight-lipped/maintained that it was 'real'.

Dude.... this is a baaad film... but I love it. Would so not get made today (for very obvs reasons...) Gordon Willis only film as director. Great Morricone score, unreleased!!

Just got back from seeing Spider Man: Into The Spiderverse with my wife and daughter and damn if it wasn’t really, really good. Like my favorite spiderman movie to date good.

Also Pemberton’s score is killer. I really hope it gets a vinyl release.

I liked it too inksb. It was my first time seeing it, I enjoyed it, it's cheesy fun. After the viewing I realized that the director also directed Battle Royale !

After reading the synopsis of Windows on Wikipedia I am not going to delve into that one :-)

My screening of Blue Velvet was fantastic. I did not remember much from my first viewing 15 years ago. And some stuff I remembered wrong. What a brilliant film. Dennis Hopper is truly menacing and insane. The scene where a prostitute is dancing on the roof of a car while In Dreams is playing and Frank puts on lipstick is ... (insert a word that combines wonderful+bizar+brilliant).

@Static: can you tell me where this Spiderman is situated in the whole Spiderman universe? Do I need to see another one before checking this one out?
