I recently got the Arrow BD of this but haven't made it all the way through yet... i am finding it difficult to buy what its selling.

I find it such a fun slasher. It's not winning any awards but does exactly what I want, terrible 80's cheese, bad acting, fun creative low budget effects, Ted Raimi (his first film!) and plenty of unnecessary nudity. I will admit the mother is one of the most grating aspects of the film. On the flip side of the coin I have seen lots of praise for The Mutilator over the years, blind bought the Arrow blu, which after seeing this film and hearing praise from like minded folks I was so excited to watch, only to find it to be one of the weaker slashers and Arrow pick ups I've ever made. Love the gore gags and theme song (Fall Break) but that's about it.

It's the first time I've seen the film in full. I used to catch parts of it on cable all the time years ago but never sat down and watched it all. I enjoyed it for what it was. It's really lacking the family dynamic that makes Poltergeist, well Poltergeist. A lot of really good fun effects and camera tricks. They really are the big draw.

Agreed, the effect with tangina in the walk in freezer is really cool, but without Dianne, Stephen, and Robbie it’s just missing something. And while it’s not the new Kane’s fault, without Julian beck the character is not nearly as ethereally terrifying. I know the second one is not as highly regarded by the majority of people, but I hold it in just as high esteem as the original.

Poltergeist 2 seems to catch a lot of shit, I avoided it for years because lots of people said it was terrible. It's not that bad, had some creepy moments and some nice effects as well. I don't hold it as high as the first but it's a decent sequel that was way better than I expected


So what's a Steven Spielberg film that inherently feels like a generic CG fest cashing in on modern trends while trying to wink at nerd culture while at the same time feeling like it was written by people who never played online videogames ever? Ready Player One that's what. If you told the director of Battleship or some other generic CG summer blockbuster directed this I'd believe you, it's so devoid of that magic Spielberg touch that I have a hard time believing he did anything other than say action and cut to the live action scenes and let others handle the CG sections of the film (ie 90% of it's way too long run time).

Oh I hated this flick. I believe it is, provably, terrible.
But fun trivia time: the only thing that kept us in our seats was spotting some of the exterior locations which are in my home town/where I cycle through almost every day! The funniest thing was seeing how little dressing the streets/tunnels needed to have that dystopian future vibe!! Haha...

Yeah this film was tedious and bland even without that excrutiating 'Shining' sequence. With it? I was fucking fuming!!

I thought Ready player one was decent. I had a fun time watching it with friends that have more mainstream tastes than mine. Probably wouldn't have watched it if they didn't all agree on the spot to watch that one during one of our movie night. I like that Silvestri took the original Gojira theme from Akira Ifukube, and reworked it for the scene with MechaGodzilla. I see it as a fun but disposable movie. I have never read the book. I don't have any strong emotions about the movie. It's a movie you don't think about anymore once you've seen it.

I rather enjoyed this one. After watching the documentary Haunters: The Art of the Scare on Netflix this films seems much closer to reality than I would have believed. It's fascinating that people want to do that to themselves and if you do come across some one who's not quite as stable as they should be these types of things can cause more severe problems. The gore was good, acting was decent and strong directing. Worth a watch if it shows up on Amazon Prime in the future (most of the Dread Presents stuff has).

Ready Player One - What a shitshow, and the book is excellent, imho. The depth of the 80's D&D and Tokusatsu nerd lore in the book is very enjoyable to read, and there are entire segments on WarGames and Monty Python and the Holy Grail that were completely cut in favor of that crappy sequence of The Shining. A lot of the Tokusatsu references were "Westernized", although they at least kept Mechagodzilla (though they dropped Ultraman and Leopardon (Japanese Spiderman giant robot) in favor of Gundam and The Iron Giant). Ugh, I was really disappointed with the end result.

UK folks that are into John Carpenter films and have 4K TV's should really pick up the Studio Canal 4K releases that just came out. I ordered Prince of Darkness and Escape from New York, the steelbook editions are cheaper than the collector sets. Collector sets look way better IMO but paying $40 for those films hurts the bank account, I opted for slightly cheaper steels at $32 from Zavvi.com They also have The Fog and They Live. I will order those eventually but my love for those other two took precedent. Actually US folks interested should pick them up as well, UHD is region free, the bluray 's that come in the package are region B locked though.
