Have fun Bez! I grabbed the new UHD of Halloween and will be watching on the 29th.

My vacation has ended and I am now forced to go back to the daily grind which does not involve watching nearly as many films. Sad times. I squeezed a few more in this weekend though.


I adore this film. It's so fucking gooey, the practical effects are incredible. Jeff Combs, Ken Foree and the beautiful Barbara Crampton. I'm sure this isnt' a popular opinion but I prefer From Beyond to Re-Animator (although I love both almost equally).

Interestingly, I have actually heard this opinion voiced a fair few times. It's a pretty close race for this guy tbh. I shan't reveal the photo finish results. That's between me and my god.

H20 is my third favorite Halloween (if I take #3 out of the ranking, but that’s what makes horse racing.

Ottomans music is great and all the reworked stuff from the original score is his doing and his orchestration, I love his opening titles to this movie, the meh stuff in there is largely recycled beltrami tracks from I know what you did and scream that the studio forced on the film after ottomans score was largely rejected. Ottomans score is certainly more orchestral than we are used to in the series, but I would recommend seeking out his “portraits in terror” which is his complete and largely rejected score. It may still not be your cup of tea but I give him a fairly big pass on this one, and I do love that they kept his quoting of the psycho theme in that one moment.

Hartnet cut his own hair on that movie and was scolded by the filmmakers for it, he agrees he doesn’t know what the hell he was thinking

It’s not perfect, and maybe I put #4 above it sometimes when I think about it, but I will absolutely put it above 5, 6, resurrection and both zombie movies.

I’ll also allow I have a soft spot for 90s dimension horror, so that might skew the ranking.

And then there's me over here who dislikes 5, 6 and H20 about equally, really really dislikes Resurrection and doesn't mind the Zombie films, which are not great but I do occasionally put them on, which is more than I can say for the above four movies. And the Directors cut of Zombies Halloween 2 is much better than the Theatrical and both versions of his first one.

Yeah (we can all agree resurrection is just the absolute worst I think) the directors cut of zombies Halloween 2 is an interesting movie.

I have complicated feelings about it in general. If a movie is bad because it’s lazy or boring or just kind of vapid then it’s easily dissmissable, zombies Halloween 2 is none of those, it’s complicated, nuts, and reeks of the effort and love he put into it, and is that much harder to then dismiss. I don’t think it’s a good movie, but I think it’s a beautiful experiment that truly comes from a place of love for the material and a desire to make something special. Dourif’s discovering of his daughters murder is one of the few times I feel like a horror movie really bothered to seriously consider and show the utter loss and pain that these characters we are watching go through, it’s such a heartfelt scene and is legitimately “horrifying”

Zombie could be a great filmmaker if he could curb his excesses a bit, I found lords of Salem to be so upsettingly unpleasant and ugly that I doubt I’ll ever watch it again. HO1kC is a lot of fun and devils rejects is rough as all hell to get through, but i think those are the only two of his films I can say are “good.” I never doubt his intent or his sincerity though, and that’s more that I can say for a lot of film makers out there

The Devil's Rejects is considered his best by most people and if Lords of Salem didn't exist then I would agree. I haven't watched 31, I have it but all the negativity around it has kept me away but it won't stop me from watching it eventually. The Halloween's are his worst films and I wont' argue that but I've always felt Zombie suffers from not letting some one else take the reigns in the writing department. He's a talented director with a clear vision but he's not the greatest writer. None of his films are perfect, he's rough around the edges but he's an interesting director that I'm always willing to check out.

For me it as the first seeing Halloween on the big screen. It looked fantastic. Unfortunately there were some young'uns laughing too much during the last 20 minutes. Really annoying and took away a bit of the experience.

Oktober 31 I am going to check out The Exorcist - director's cut on the big screen!

Good stuff Hatter - I will definitely check out 'Portraits in Terror' thanks - it makes total sense now you've clue'd me in on the Beltrami off-cuts, as that's excactly what it sounded like.

I recently rewatched the first three Scream movies and REALLY TRIED TO LIKE THEM MORE, but their well-documented 'Scooby-Doo-ness' just makes them a joke to me. So I'm pretty sure I'm not a 90s/Dimension guy. (I'll try and ponder on some that I do like....hmmm..... are the Final Dest films Dimension? I freakin LOVE all of those!)

Final Destination is a 00s New Line Cinema thing. That is why you like those in stead of the 90s Dimension things. New Line beats Dimension!

Oh yeah if Scream doesn’t do it for you there’s no way H20 is going to ever work for you, by contrast I never really got into the final destination stuff but will go through all 4 screams on a regular basis.

Different strokes etc etc etc. that’s what I love about this genre, it’s a big tent with something for everyone in it. One of my closest friends is highly enamored of what one of us on here once called “post-millennial ghosts stories” I.e a lot of the modern mainstream stuff (apologies, can’t remember who that was but it’s been my go to since they posted it) and by and large I can’t STAND those types of movies, with James Wan’s work being the major exception. He in turn has no time for the indie retro horror boom of the last 8 years that I’ve been jazzed about almost consistently.

Mandy was... interesting. I felt some of the scene transitions were jarring or just lazy writing, but I still have enough psychoactive residue in my brainstem to transport me directly into that world without any trouble... I mean, I do live *here*, haha. That biker crew could have shown up anywhere in the Pacific NW and I would have just nodded and asked what was in the jar...
