Yep. It took almost 2/3rds of way through before it fully clicked for me.

Wow, I fucking hated this thing. I was recommended to watch it by a few people, the premise sounded interesting. I almost bought the bluray for $25 on these recommendations but instead opted for a digital watch first and I'm glad I did. Here is what I liked in the film, the set design and death effects. That's it. It has the single most annoying and pretentious cast I've seen in a film in a really long time. The main character is the most unlikable person in the cast, his girlfriend looks annoyed to be there, his best friend is trying really hard. All of the peripheral characters are annoying. The concept of the film would have made a great short, a feature length is boring and drawn out, made worse by bad acting and unlikable characters. The writing is atrocious, lines are just put in places that seem like they should go with out any natural life to the lines or how they connect. The whole script felt like copy and pasted lines of dialog that some one felt was clever or a "good line". Two big thumbs down from this guy and a recommended skip for those mildly interested.

We watched three episodes Monday night and two more last night. Jamie loves it. I keep glancing over at her during the more bizarre scenes and she just has a huge grin on her face. I asked her about the Brazil inspiration and she agreed. Brazil is my favorite film of all-time, so I'm willing to see how this all ends. I still can't get used to seeing this Bizarro/slim version of Jonah Hill though.

I have to say that the director and premise, not to mention the atmosphere and influences, really make me want to join you fellows in watching Maniac, but, aside from not being a huge fan of Theroux, I really don't enjoy Stone or Hill very much either. I've never really thought about it much before but I definitely avoid films that heavily feature these folks and the few I've seen that I did get a kick out of have never been revisited. Maybe I have a brain ailment or something.

I absolutely love this film. Outside of Carpenters original, it's my favorite Halloween. I program a month of movie viewing and TV watching for my wife and I, occasionally friends as well, in October. I usually set up themes for weeks or nights, double features and other fun shit. This year my wife decided to go back to get a Masters degree so my programming has been severely truncated. Season of the Witch always opens the month for me, I usually close with Halloween and Trick 'R Treat. Happy October every one!

re: Maniac - I was shocked by the Fulci-like gore scene they snuck into this... yikes. I am going to try and watch Mandy this week if at all possible. I thought I had all the stars aligned over the weekend, but I sailed into rough waters.

(As an aside...I used to work in an art house video store, and took it upon myself to deface the back of the Swimmer DVD sleeve which GAVE THE SHOCK ENDING AWAY!)

Guys! Guys! What if we have a sequel to the boring Godzilla Netflix movie last year and we make it even more boring and....wait for it......don't have Godzilla show up until the last 15 minutes of a 100 runtime? I think we may have struck gold here.

Completely agree Mateo. Slither is hands down one of the best horror films of the 00's. And Slugs is an underrated gem that's often overlooked and was shot less than 30 mins from where I grew up!

I love this film, am a huge Ellison fan. If you're interested I can't recommend highly enough the Richard Corben/Ellison adaptation of this story as a two part comic. It's stunning.
