I need to pick up the Scream Factory bluray of Someone's Watching Me! it's one of two Carpenter films I haven't seen, the other being Elvis which I own but I haven't set aside the time to watch it as it's close 3 hours long.

I really like Elvis a lot, Kurt Russell is great in it and you can see carpenters style even with the drastic change in tone and genre.

I do not know about Letterboxd.
Sometime I forget what I do for a living. Yesterday was one of those days.
Normally I do not have a lot of time to watch movies. Normally I am very jealous of the amount of movies you and @ScoJo watch. Thankfully normally means that exceptions have to occur.

@ScoJo: nice one. I have not yet seen Il Profumo Della Signora. I do have an Italian 7" of the score.

I have also never seen Someone's Watching Me nor Elvis.

I did finish Sharp Objects last weekend. The last two episodes were great. Any grievances I had in episode 2 - 6 went away when the show was finished (the large amount of super short flashbacks and focus on alcohol).

And I watched Zodiac a couple of day ago, the director's cut. It had been about ten years since I had seen it. And I never had seen the director's cut. I couldn't remember a thing from back then. It was as viewing it for the first time. Not as suspenseful as I had hope.

Is it just me or does the change in pace in movies feel much more dramatic between movies from 2005 versus 2018 then from 1950 to 2005? I do not mind slow movies. I do not remember Jaws to be a slow movie. But the 18-year old in the house stopped watching Jaws because he found it to be too slow (boring?).
Maybe it is not the difference in pace in the last ten years or so (because of higher quality tv-shows?) but more the difference between and 18-year old watching 'old' movies versus a 38-year old watching any movie.
I do remember watching Avengers years ago and that I simply could not follow everything that was going on on the 40" screen. Maybe the answer is a bigger screen.

@ScoJo: Yes, Someone's Watching Me! was a rewarding rewatch. It could be debated if it could profit from beeing trimmed by a couple of minutes but that's probably nitpicking. edit: Or to link this to the question/observation of Bez from above, I'm sure younger audiences would find it (too) slow. I found myself checking the runtime sometime in the middle of the film as I thought it was dragging a bit but then things got really engaging again.

I read somewhere that it's a mix of Rear Window and The Conversation and I get why someone would do that comparison. That said I found it to be a very solid contribution to the thriller genre with JC's distinct signature all over it (the ending is so well shot and tense and there's great sequences and shots also before, like the guy with the cigarette above Lauren Hutton ...). Amazing that they only showed this on TV at the time.

And Perfume of the Lady in Black is high on my watchlist.

@inksb: The Scream blu was the way I watched it, it has a good looking transfer and solid extras (always nice to see Adrienne Barbeau in a video interview).

i dunno. movies today a really long. aren't all the superhero movies at least two hours long? and all the mission: impossible movies are way too long, which is one (of many) reasons why i don't care for them. but, to your question, maybe what's changed is the editing style. i think older movies were more "patient" in terms of editing. today editing is more frenetic, which might make someone feel like older movies are too slow.

I will also add VOTOMS and Future Boy Conan to the list.

For both @Dollar and @inksb - Crying Freeman is definitely one of the series that really stands out in my memory from all those years ago. It was very serious in tone compared to all the other comedy/lolz OVA, and obviously has a lot of adult material and violence but no scifi, just straight yakuza assassin business.

Supposedly, this was the first anime show to feature mechas with a human pilot in a cockpit. The show was also dubbed in Spanish and was huge in Mexico in the 1980's. It influenced Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim. Ah well, at least I got to catch Robotech back then.

VOTOMS is actually up on a streaming service called Hidive. They also have a few other vintage anime series, for example Casshern and Gatchaman, and they have at least one for the hissatsu TV series which I'm really intrigued to check out.

I've not seen violence jack or genocyber, somebody recently was asking me if violence jack got an LP ost release, sadly I don't think it did. I do vaguely remember watching the first part of the guyver anime, which was awesome, I also have the ost on LP which ain't to shabby either;).

Mazinger and other go nagai era mecha shows were pretty huge in parts of Europe apperently back in the day. I've heard of djs in Italy dropping the steel jeeg and goldorak (mazinger) themes and the crowd going wild!

Letterboxd is just an app and website that people use to review and track movies. I try to use to keep track of what I've watched but have fallen off over the last few months. Most of my movie tracking is just in this thread.

I don't think the movies are slow, I think the editing style has changed and caused younger people to expect a certain thing visually and if they don't get it then they are bored. It's strange. I find a lot of modern movies way too damn long and they don't keep my attention even if they are frantically paced. I think it was Rob G or Elric on the Shockwaves podcast that put it perfectly when it comes to my views on length of film, "you need to earn every minute over 90". Basically if your film is just long to be long then I don't need that shit. The average movie these days is 2 hours, even kids movies are pushing that length, there is no reason for it. Most of these stories can be told in 90 minutes or less. A lot of the super hero movies tend to be 20 minutes too long, I have a really hard time watching LotR trilogy as they tend to be long winded while leaving important stuff out (The Hobbit's were the worst). Hereditary was just over 2 hours and I felt it the length was just fine, it kept me engaged the entire time and I was never looking at the clock.

Enough of this though, I watched this for the first time last night....



I rather enjoyed it, Miguel Ferrer is always a pleasure. The creature design was awesome.

As excited as I am for anything that he puts his talent to, I admit to being a little bummed that he seems attached to lotsa (admittedly awesome sounding) existing properties, but there's been no chatter about another 'original' Peele project. We'll see I spose. (Just please....no Get Out 2: Sunken Boogalloo!!)

Get on Murder Party ScoJo if you haven't seen it. It's quite good. Not on the same level as Blue Ruin or Green Room but you can see the beginnings of Saulnier's style in there.

And I'm all for more TD, it wasn't rushed, hopefully they took the criticism to heart on S2. Which I didn't hate, it wasn't exactly great but had some great performances. Farrell obviously, Rachel McAdams was better than I thought she would be and aside from his performance in Brawl in Cell Block 99, it was Vaughn's best performance in almost a decade. It just had too high of a bar set by S1 to even come close. I think S3 will turn out to be some where in the middle (hopefully)

@Monster - Can confirm that Murder Party is fun, fun stuff. Great tip on him directing some true Detective. I have moderately high hopes for the new season already.

@Inks - Deep Star Six is a very enjoyable Abyss/Leviathan knockoff. And I maybe sort of am kind of possibly related to someone involved in the making of that film.

@ScoJ - I didn't hear about Peele/Candyman. I was admittedly excited to see him produce a new Twilight Zone, but was definitely looking forward to a new original picture. I love Candyman. A lot. Hopefully I'll love this too.

Right out of the gate I'm loving the weird atmosphere, and southern-US setting. Very much has flavour of Fulci 'set in US' horror. This was one of the OG 'video nasties' here in the UK. Haven't seen anything that explains why yet (it's often that way with those 80s banned flicks!) but I suspect it may be something to do with children.

Typically dramatic score by Riz Ortolani.

My fave bit of IMDB trivia:
The entire crew had to be still and quiet during the shooting of any scenes involving the Rottweiler dogs.

@monster - Murder Party was just what I needed for a perfect viewing tonight. I found myself with a couple hours of free time this evening to watch this. This film has just the right mix of dark humor, so damn good.

Halloween is coming! My favorite time of year.
