After a shit day yesterday, today a day off and now I am sitting in the cinema for a noon screening of 2001: a space odyssey.
Has been 10
Years since I have last seen it. And never on the big screen.
Only thee people in the theater... always nice. Almost a private screening :-)

Enjoy! I was able to see it on the big screen projected in 35mm about 8 years ago and it was an incredible experience. That was the last time I watched it. I even bought the bluray when it came out but just never put it in. I think it's my favorite Kubrick but that kind of changes over time.



Last night I watched Sequence Break, written and directed by Graham Skipper (actor - Almost Human, The Mind's Eye, Beyond the Gates) and starring Chase Williamson (Beyond the Gates, John Dies At the End, Victor Crowley). The film focuses on Chase's character Oz, who works at a Arcade shop doing repairs. A mysterious game board shows up one night, he decides to hook it up to a cabinet and a hypnotic game starts up. From there it delves into some Cronenbergian body horror that get's real gooey. The film is very low budget but I found it incredibly well made, good acting and a story that seemed made just for me. I grew on arcades, I miss them dearly. It's available on Shudder right now.

I saw the then-new 4K remaster in the cinema a couple of years back and it was stunning. Enjoy the film, Bez, and have a better day today!

I had grand plans to watch lots of films this weekend but weather was too damn nice and I spent one day on the lake in a boat and the other working in the yard. I did squeeze these two in though.



Spasms is a really low budget snake slasher film. It's kinda fun, has some terrible / entertaining giant snake effects, nothing really special but if you like C or D grade horror films check it out.

Strangers Prey At Night is a more entertaining film than the original but it's lacking the tension of the original. This one has more kills, gore and better effects. The soundtrack is really fun. I don't really care for the original all that much, home invasion films don't really do too much for me but they are both effective for what they are. If you liked the first there is no reason you wouldn't like this one and you may even like it if you didn't like the first one, I did.

Spasms is a bit slow but like you mentioned but I do like some of the effects..especially the death of lead actor Al Waxman after being bitten. Al bubbles up in an extreme fashion. It was a low budget film but master makeup artist Dick Smith did the effects. I remember trying to hunt that damn movie down as a kid just to see the bladder effects. Years later after knowing the makeup artist he gave me a little box that had a bunch of the snake bite appliances from that film. Must be almost forty years old now. Somewhere I have some of the face and arm pieces for the bladder makeups. Such beautiful sculptures and the foam still cotton soft, as if they were baked yesterday.

Sunday Evening Programming:

This is a film I saw a few years back on DVD, wasn't really sure if I would be into it, that poster is extremely misleading. But I had been told it was a really fun slasher. Well, it surprisingly was and I've been a big fan ever since. Scorpion Releasing just put out a beautiful new bluray taken from a 4K scan of the original negative and it's a thing of beauty. I showed my wife the film for the first time last night and she had almost the same reaction to it as I did. She has been avoiding watching it because it didn't sound very good but I finally convinced her. If you are into Slasher flicks and have missed this one or avoided it you should give it a chance. It's worth your time.

I watched Thor: Ragnarok and Death Wish (2018) last night. Thor, and its score, were very good and I don't typically care for superhero films, or their scores, and Death Wish was pretty meh and I typically love films of its oeuvre. It just couldn't decide what it wanted to be.

I'll watch Death Wish eventually as I like to see what Eli Roth is doing. I'm in the camp that thinks he's a good director who consistently makes poor choices. I like Cabin Fever and Hostel. Hostel 2 was an excercise in excessive violence. The Green Inferno could have been a decent cannibal film but was brought down by juvenille humor and a too on the nose comment about social media activists. Knock Knock was actually pretty decent with a great performance by Keanu. Death Wish had me worried the moment they cast Willis who I have deemed the Sleepwalker as that is how he seems be performing for the last decade or so. He acted a little in Looper but that was more JGL's show anyways.

DW, like Roth's films in general, could've been something much better, but instead had a couple few good moments and the rest was largely forgettable.

Nailed it in one, Deaf. As per. Ive long maintained that Thanksgiving is Ruth's best film. It still suffers from all of his usual pitfalls but at least it's short.

Indeed, I also watched the trailer for Green Inferno and left it at that -- an enjoyable trailer. ;)

DW felt like a neutered version of the film it was reimagining and didn't have any of the internal struggle that Bronson as Kersey had in the original. Bruce (who is looking stranger as he ages, and appears to not have an upper lip anymore) plays a surgeon who just starts killing random people and he's perfectly cool with it. Also, all the blood/gore is all CGI which looks like complete shit. Even a small hand wound that Bruce suffers from firing a gun improperly is created with CG effects and it looks like garbage.

Evil Genius is on my dock to try and watch over the next week but I also just found out about Sion Sono's new show on Amazon Tokyo Vampire Hotel. I'm a big Sono fan so that's up first.


Watched Angel Heart last night and about 20 minutes in realized I had seen it but it's been a good 15+ years as only certain images were retained. It's a decent film, it's a little slow but has some great scenes. I can't believe how much Rourke's appearance has changed over the years.

I've mentioned this in here before, but Angel Heart's great undoing is similar to that of JC's Vampires. It plays as if a producer repeatedly demanded a five minute slimmer runtime than was being delivered so sat over an editor's shoulder while they proceeded to knock a further couple few seconds from every cut. There is just a beat missing at the end of nearly every scene and most transitions feel very rushed as a result.

Also, every time I watch Angel Heart I am almost surprised by the amount of scenery chewing going on in the film. There's no judgement in that statement. It's just that the film is a bit more...stately in my memories than it plays for me in real time.

Final Exam is a slasher I've heard both sides of the spectrum from people that I generally agree with, some hate it while others love it. I've been putting it off for a while, didn't want to commit to buying it with out seeing it first, I noticed it was Prime Video so I took a stab (bad pun). It's a halfway decent college slasher. It feels like it is taking place on campus which is a big plus, the characters did nothing for me but I enjoyed seeing their demise. I didn't enjoy it enough to run out and grab the bluray but it's worth a watch if you enjoy slashers.
