@ Jode_Steele - up until a couple years ago I managed an indie store here in the States (and still do most of the ordering for that store, including RSD). Some of the retailers are left just as much in the dark as the customers. The distribution of titles is kind of fucked, depending on what label they are on/what distributor they are affiliated with. There are really only 2 HUGE music distribution companies left in the US now. They provide a master list, and stores can order however many of whatever titles they want. But what they end up getting is a whole different story. Different stores may have accounts with some of the smaller distributors and/or buy direct from some labels. In these sorts of cases, they can order the same title multiple times from multiple sources. However, there is never a guarantee with ANY of these sources. I guess what I'm trying to say (perhaps not very well)is that it's really a bit of a crapshoot for all involved.
There are other factors too - obviously the biggest titles that are really limited get ordered by everyone. However, certain stores may cater towards certain clientele. Like if a store has a focus on Blues and Jazz, and you contact them inquiring about a Slayer RSD release - there's a chance they will order one, get one, and it will be in the bin when walk through the door. On the other hand, a Bill Evans or Miles Davis release might sit on the shelves for weeks at a store that caters to Metal/Hardcore fans.
As a general rule every store I know of limits the releases to 1 per customer, does not hold anything for anyone, and will do their best to get particular releases if they are getting requests for them. There are so many releases on RSD now that most stores don't order every single title (at least the true Mom and Pop indie stores), as the expense is huge and you run the risk of having items in stock that don't sell.
