Chatting with @static last night, was saying how much I loved the first movie (second not so much at the time, but I'll give it another watch soon) and this is easily my favourite of Manfredini's horror scores. Highly effective, disctinctive, varied, flavourful - love those low cello notes that open proceedings (reminds me of Reanimator quite a bit) and glorious 80s synth stabs, but then with House but even more so in House II, an almost cartoon-ey scoring style which really reminds me of Scott Bradley's MGM work.

All in all it hits all my nostalgia nerves, tingles my spine, tickles my funny bone and gooses my gander... I frickin' love this score!

Lastly - just more praise for these VS original pressings. This one is 40 years old y'all, and the Near Mint copy which I received surely sounds as fresh and full as the day it was born. I am constantly blown away by the quality of their records, and will undoubtedly be a Fan for Life.
This is probably my favorite Manfredini score, i picked this up about two years ago and i'm planning on giving in a comparison listen with the waxwork reissue. The HOUSE series is so strange, the first one is really a great little ghost story with some really unsettling effects, and the line between camp and horror really puts it right into the "EC Horror" wheelhouse. the second film is kinda fun but also goofy to a fault, and i have a hard time really enjoying it for the most part. the third one isn't really a third one at all (although i guess you could say the same about part 2) and the fourth...well...Anyone who has seen it knows...that pizza..i mean.

100% agreed on this, although I never did watch past House II... I always had a real prob with many of those sequels to such great little original horror flicks: Reanimator, Return of the Living Dead, CHUD II, House, Fright Night...I could name many others. Although esp. in the case of Fright Night, I always avoided the sequel but when I finally caught it a few years ago it was actually pretty good! I guess the lesson is that sometimes you need a bit of time, particularly when it comes to movies that you love.

I think William Goldman summed it up pretty well tbh, in What Lie Did I Tell: he called sequels 'whore's movies', in that original movies are made for love and out of creativity and a desire to do something new, whereas sequels are almost always just about mo' money.

Hear hear. I completely agree with this assessment. EC Comics indeed.

As to the 4th. I used to be fairly well acquainted, in a roundabout sense, with one of the writers of that...ahem...film. The script began as another haunted house picture, but eventually got wrapped into the House franchise somewhere along the way to make it more saleable. Apparently it worked.

I'm Jelly! Been trying to add this to my VS collection for a while now. I passed on the WWR release because I'd rather have this one. One day it will be mine!

Ahh, so many! I mean, there's a hit list of classic stuff but tbh I'd love to have them all eventually... gotta collect em all!
Is there a complete list somewhere? I guess not all titles are on Discogs.
And what is the first release of VS on vinyl?

Tbh I think the Discogs list is probably fairly complete...? Especially as far as OST releases, anyway. The first VS soundtrack release on vinyl was a reissue of Silent Running in '78 - on green vinyl, n less! (Interesting since I personally can't think of aonther VS release that's on colour wax...)

I caved in and bought the real gone music repress on "predator blood green" even though it's quite expensive. I didn't want to miss out again, by waiting for the prices to go down.

I was doing a search and found the list on wikipedia. It states that the score to a musical was first: https://www.discogs.com/Bruce-Kimmel-Th ... se/3328383

Followed by Les Baxter's score to: https://www.discogs.com/Les-Baxter-Orig ... se/1322881

Scojo: you know better than me I am simply stating what I found :-)
Inneresting! They are all '78 releases, so I guess I'll trust the Wiki hive-mind in terms of which was released first.

StarCraft: Remastered. Good stuff. Really want to see a super deluxe Diablo box set-- I, II and III complete edition. Maybe one day. Digging the StarCraft record though.

Puppet love
That's a great Carter Burwell score, @tex - and for once, I really enjoyed having the dialogue woven throughout. It's like listening to a radio play version of the film, and since it's animation/the voices have all been recorded 'in the booth', they have a real presence which is intimate and affecting. What a movie!
