Read an in-depth review of the new Death Wish, the gist of which was nicely summed up by the strap-line:
'A film by and for assholes'

It really does look bad. Even the previews just look off, tonally. They tried to fix that in the latest version of the trailer by slapping a grindhouse filter over the top of it. No dice. Everything out of Willis' mouth is either emotionless or a John McClane style one liner. Bronson's performance is subdued and laconic, but it is nuanced and not at all flat. He isn't letting the audience in on a joke; he's deadly serious. And he really emotes. As much as it pains me to say, I'm not sure Willis is up to the task. Or, perhaps more accurately, I'm not sure Roth is up to the task of getting that kind of performance out of him. All that said, I'll still be seeing this in the theater. I want people to make more movies like this and release them theatrically so I will support it.

In fairness, the review (B.M.D. I think?) was focussed mainly on the film's blockheaded and unfortunate 'reading of the room' as regards current feelings about such matters, tho it did give Roth a pretty rough ride specifically. Like the reviewer, I really liked Cabin Fever but have found everything after that to be Not My Thang. John Carpenter in an interview once referred to him as 'that haircut Eli Roth', heh heh.
Clearly the kind of 'push button/reactionary' b-flick that needs seeing with warm bodies around you though, fair play @mateo.

Yeah, I find myself liking the idea of Roth much more than his actual work. Though I will add the Thanksgiving trailer to the list of good things he's done. Bringing the grand total to a whopping two.

PS - I watched DW2 late last night/early this morning. Jimmy Page's crazy guitar strains are pretty great. You can best believe that 3 is in my near future as well.

DW2 - love that score!! And DW3 is mostly a blast! Tho not as much fun as the trailer for DW4: The Crackdown (Junkie Punk: "Who are you??" Bronson, emblamed, disinterested: "I'm death" Perfunctory shotgun blast: "BLAM")

This is my recollection as well. The first one is a Film. The rest are movies.

3 is a personal favorite, cannon at the height of its nonsense powers. After that, they really go downhill fast. And yeah the trailer for 4 is just gold.

But for my money, the mechanic is where it’s at for Bronson

I mean, for all the shit that Michael Winner has gotten - The Mechanic, The Stone Kller, Death Wish, Chato's Land.... these are the great Bronson flicks.

Point well made about Winner, but I can't help feeling you're short-changing some great 80's Bronson flicks. Death Hunt, 10 To Midnight, The Evil That Men Do, etc.

Enjoyed it a lot, even more now the second time round. And yes, ScoJo, the guys behind It Follows did the Tarantino on this one.

Sorry, Mateo can‘t help you out (I currently don‘t own a PC), but maybe someone else from here.
I watched the Code Red Blue which I ordered from Diabolik along with Criterion‘s Night of the Living Dead. Sole Survivor is not exactly cheap on Blue but for me it was worth it (it looks great and I listened in to the audio commentary which seems to be a very solid extra). ‚Night‘ however, is absolutely AMAZING, the joy of watching this is up there with Suspiria from Synapse.

I've had more than a few tapes that have bit the dust in the last few years, but these Media Home Entertainment ones still play really good. A true classic that I will never get tired of.

Nice one Mateo! Death Wish 3&4 are so much fun to watch. I really think they're borderline black comedies. They look like figures from a wax museum! lol!

It's a glorious split second (and I mean maybe three frames) re-establishing shot of Trejo and another heavy before their table explodes. It's pretty great. DW3 and 4, while different, are almost laugh out loud funny pump your fist in the air funny. Such a wild change of pace from the OG. There's a Robert O Ragland score that ditches the Page riffs they recycled for 3 in favor of meandering sax solos over a slapped bass. It's lots of fun.

Right?! The wine rep skit is hilarious. The whole first two thirds of the film are just a grip of sketches and action pieces loosely connected with some narration. The script is especially lean on this one.

As for a DW3 score, outside of the opening and closing pieces, I think all of the tunes are just re-used Page cues from DW2. That's why they never issued a proper soundtrack for it.

Ok, I've seen his name on the opening credits of DW3. It's funny I've only watched DW & DW2 a couple of times each. When it comes to 3&4 I have repeated viewings of those films; It's probably because of the absolute absurdity of the those movies.

Meanwhile, I watched “the ritual” on netflix, solid lost in the woods horror with a moody score by Ben Lovett (synchronicity) the last act is great and has TRULY bizarre and unique creature design.

Just did Sole Survivor. Pretty entertaining I guess. It had some genuinely funny lines and a couple of clever twists, but for such a lean film, there sure are a lot of plot holes. Might need someone to explain this one to me.

PS - Disembodied whispers still give me the heebie jeebies every time.

I made a fake head sculpture for Robert De Niro in Casino for an exploding car scene. I remember it was like a jump cut scene so you really barely see it. Some other folks in the shop did a joe pesci death scene head that kind did not come off too good being that it is in broad daylight for an extended period of time. The crew also got boned on their screen credits and just the studio was named. Happens sometimes...casualties of the silver screen. I liked Casino but if felt a little too much like Goodfellas for me.
