Slaughters Big Rip-Off along with Black Caesar are two of my favorite scores of the 1970s. Excellent work. I have an original Japanese pressing of Slaughter's.

Deck update:

And it looks like I'm a winner - I believe this is the slightly later model GL-85 manufactured under license by Goldring, which has the added diode mod to prevent motor damage, fully working (which my previous deck never was) including ON/OFF, speed control, speed adjust, auto stop, fitted with a SHURE M75EJ cart. The arm lower doesn't appear working, so can look into that at some point, but this came with the OG lid (rare as rocking horse shit!) in amazing condition, AND all of the anti-skate mech furniture which you never see on these old Lenco decks. I just have to decide now whether I pay through the teeth to have the actual weight, or just use some fishing shot for pennies ;) Somebody(s) have really looked after this beauty, and the recent full service hasn't hurt either. For less than £80? I honestly can't believe my luck.

A cool surprise is that I am actually rather fond of the wood-colour plinth, and think I'm just going to leave this deck intact, and try to replace the motor/generally service and upgrade my other GL-85 as a spare. This one doesn't have the Lenco badge on the front, strangely - will have to look into what that 'means' in terms of it's manufacture date etc.

Another surprise is how great this deck sounds - and I'm convinced it's output is louder than my previous GL-85. Either my old one had a failing pre-amp, or this model has an improved one, either way it sounds freakin amazing and once the ground loop is sorted properly it'll be a stunner: the current earth lead is very short, so it's temp earthed through the base of my iMac! And as quiet as an ant not even thinking about pissing on cotton :D

But boy am I happy to be spinning again! I have a pile of wax which I'm loading up and will report back...

Happy days though, that was a rough few weeks!

I'm on my fifth spin of Side A, can't get past it- this is another Varese 80s monster!

DOWN TWISTED

Lashings of mid-80s Tangerine Dream, quite a bit of Faltermeyer and a healthy dash of Moroder...good times! There's even a rather lovely ballad thrown in, 'I'm Closer Now'. Who the fuck are Berlin Game??

Gonna have to hit the flick soon too - it's an Albert Pyun joint for Cannon Films at their very height! Kindof a post-Romancing the Stone rip-off...has to be amazing right!?

*EDIT*

Aha! I was spot on with the TD reference - Eric Allaman (one half of Berlin Game) worked with them on Legend!

Also, I had heard of this movie before but couldn't think why - it's because Oingo Boingo make an appearance in it! Now I recall watching that scene on YT while I was researching a DFC special on Oingo....damn, definitely gonna have to watch this flick now! :D

STUDY IN TERROR: Sherlock Holmes Vs. Jack the Ripper
The John Scott Orchestra
1965, Roulette Records

Starts in full-on Hammer territory, but then gets really interesting with lots of Touch-of-Evil era Mancini flourishes and a bit of Anton Karas zither style on one track, then goes a bit Basil Kirchin...mostly very British mid-60s sounding though. Very nice.

@scoJo what a find!

I’m currently hammering the Goblin DOTD live in Helsinki. I can only imagine what it sounds like on a better turntable than my project 3 from 2003

@scojo welcome back to the fold! :) I like the wood grain plinth as well.

Those tables don’t have built in preamps but that shure cart has a pretty high output, even for a high output cart. I’m guessing that’s why you’re noticing the difference in volume :)

Ahh really? Don't know where I got that idea...hmm...thought it mentioned pre-amp in the service manual but 'parently not! Thanks for the intel, my fact-checkin' cuz!

PS - ScoJ, is that plinth an after market job or just a lesser seen OEM variant?

I love this movie and I love this score. First saw it on a plane, I wish John Neville had played Holmes in more productions. The Warner archive dvd was a stunning transfer and I’m excited to see what the new Blu-ray coming out looks like. I was thrilled to find a copy of this in the wild years back.

^ Always a thrill to see things 'in hand'... hope you don't get lost under it's Messianic spell @Spun....

This just landed, got a sweet deal from a US supplier with free shipping (Rarewaves I think?)

Wanted this for loooong time, from what I understand it's a 'grey'/unofficial release (though the back sleeve has all kindsa licensing info so who the heck knows??)

Sound QT is pretty darned good - a little noisy and a bit of compression evident in parts, but really not at all bad. I dig it. The re-orchestrations of the Morricone cues are very well done for the most part by Larry Hopkins, with only the very occasional bit jumping out slightly as 'off', mostly due to massive over-familiarity with the source! And all the more impressive for being digital orchestrations I think? Need to check my facts on that, but seem to remember (in the complex history of The Thing score releases!) that that's the case. And yeah, I can hear it occassionally tbh. Not quite as dense/tonally varied as the OG orchestral recordings.

But what a thrill to finally have Howarth's recreations of the Carpenter cues he worked on, now on wax. Will be getting plenty of plays!

And thankfully, they ditched the crappy CD artwork which they teased the release with, in favour of a much nicer front image- not amazing (as we've sadly come to expect of everyone now!!) but really quite acceptable, for me at least.

Spun out of control wrote:Next up on the deck at Spun Towers.... an obvious labour of love from @ScoJo this one, as we knew it would be... ;)
That looks awesome, I can't wait to get mine. Unfortunately the USPS hates me, every order I place with Twoheadeddog takes 2 weeks from "shipment" to delivered for some awful reason. Meanwhile I can order from discogs and have some one ship from the same damn area and it arrives in less than a week.

I don't think that's the USPS slowing you down.
