Many squibs were harmed during the making of this film. I haven't seen The Killer in over a decade, it was like watching it for the first time. I forgot how incredible the shoot outs were. The two final set pieces were incredibly impressive. Seriously though, how many squibs did they use while making this. I have a few more Woo films to watch in the coming weeks, hopefully revisiting Hard Boiled, checking out A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2 for the first time. Any one have a recommendation or two of his films to check out? No US productions, I've seen most or all of them, I'm looking for his HK stuff.

Hej Inksb, You should for sure watch Better Tomorrow I (II is solid, too) if not only because it‘s here he really developed his trademark style and themes (friendship, betrayal, honor...). Bullet in the Head is a very good and intense film, so would highly recommend watching that one.

This is a highly seasonal film for me, I need it hot outside, but kinda grey and maybe a storm coming in. I picked up the 4K recently and am just waiting on the weather haha.

My wife bought her first bluray in over 2 years this weekend. My Hero Academia is one of her favorite shows, for those that don't know what it is, it's about teenagers who go to school to be super heroes. 60% of the worlds population is born with quirks (aka super powers), some are useful while others are mundane dumb stuff. The story focuses on a kid who was born quirkless but wants to be a super hero so bad. The worlds most famous super hero is essentially losing his power (unknown to the world) and he decides to pass his power on to this kid. The show focuses on him learning how to use that power and deal with his classmates and school. It's very fun, lighthearted, well animated, great voice cast for both Japanese and English. The film is just a one off event that happens between semesters, a handful of the class visit a remote island dedicated to technology, during a press conference something goes wrong, bad guys show up and trap all the super heroes and it's up to the kids to save the day. Being a film with a bigger budget than the TV show they use it to it's fullest extent, there are fantastically animated sequences. The best thing about the movie is that there isn't some crazy cliffhanger to pull you back in next week for the next episode, it's a self contained story with a proper conclusion. I'm not sure how much some one will get out of the movie with having seen the first two seasons of the show though, I think you would miss a lot.

Thanks @bez, I like to live vicariously through your posts on Italian cinema as well. I love a lot of it but there are too many things for me to watch and I have a hard time staying focused on one thing. Your ability to do a full year of these films is beyond my means, haha. I forgot to ask when you finished last year's run, what would your top 10 films of your year in Spaghetti Westerns be? Just the ones that you enjoyed the most and think you would revisit again down the road. Since I've only been a consistent visitor of the forum over the past year and a half, did you do anything similar in years past? Perhaps a year of Gialli films? Or maybe that's next year ;)

I have to get back to you what my top 10 spaghetti westerns is concerned. There were a lot of gems but also a lot of very slow burners. One I do remember surprising me was They Call me Trinity. Very funny.

I watched around 100 gialli in a two year period starting five years or so ago. I still have around 30 I think ready to watch. But I think I'll keep those for next year. However, I am planning on watching eurohorror next year. I have not seen a lot of those.
At the moment I try to watch one or two Italian crime movies during the week. And every other weekend I try to watch a current movie combined with an 80's slasher or other type of 80's horror. I thought I had watched a lot of movies during the nineties but I am now learning I have missed a ton of fun flicks from the era before CGI.

Yeah, I was always the "movie guy" in my group of friends growing up but the more I fall into film the more I realize how far from that title I really was. I had one friend who was a super horror nerd and got me into the genre much deeper than my surface level love but over the last decade I have drifted from keeping up on more modern movies and just fallen into stuff I didn't know existed or only seen through snippets of magazines in the 90's. I look forward to your trip through Euro Horror as it's something I've always been interested in and wanted to watch more of. Mondo Macabro just released a special edition bluray of The Devil's Nightmare which sounds and looks really interesting. A regular blu should be out in May I think.

Do you categorize Naschy films as Euro horror? Or do they kind of fall into their own Spanish category? The wife and I discovered him last year and we both love almost everything we've seen from him. I bought the two Naschy collections from Scream Factory and picked up two from Mondo Macabro.

I have to do a lot of research and make a list of what movies I am going to see. I mainly am interested in the Italian directors/producers, but Paul Naschy's movies are not a bad idea to include.

Well after making the boneheaded mistake of trying to go to Avengers on Sunday only to be told the next 5 showings were sold out I decided to sneak out of work yesterday early and catch a matinee because this movie is 3 hours long and I wanted to be home at a decent hour. Since we don't have a spoiler tag (or at least I can't find one and the usual code for most forums does not work) I will leave this spoiler free as I don't want to ruin anything for any one. I'll be blunt and say this is a mid tier Marvel movie, it should be one of the best but unfortunately (at least for me) it is not one I plan on revisiting. I understand why the film is 3 hours long, I get what they were trying to do but there were way too many moments where it felt like they held a scene 2,3 or 4 beats longer than it needed, that adds up when it's almost every character moment. It was a decent resolution to the 10 years that preceded it but damn did it test my patience in the first 120 minutes, the last 45 minutes are pretty stellar and everything I wanted, in fact the big finale almost made me forget about how bored I was leading up to it. It hit me in the feels at the end too, although as I get older I've become more of a softy anyways. Most of the spectacle looked incredible, the VFX work is top notch, except for one particular suit that is worn, every face you see through the front of this suit looks bad, really bad. The funny thing is it's just a helmet, if they had used a real helmet rather than CG the whole thing it would of looked great. If you've watched all the other films you need to see this, there are great moments, boring moments and brilliant action. If you haven't seen Marvel films prior to this you will be lost, you won't get much out of it if you haven't spent time with these characters in the past. I was afraid I was going to miss something because I couldn't make it to Captain Marvel in the theater, no worries on that, if you have a basic knowledge of the character then you're fine.

@inksb I liked Endgame, didn’t love it. There’s a few scenes in there which are particularly great, and the slices of Americana work quite well as usual. The sense of humour is fine, the script is good enough. It’s just too much! The best character Ant Man vanishes with the soul about halfway through, and it just explodes and rumbles to the end.

spoiler I guess ** I guess the most annoying Iron Man moment was when he invents time travel. The films subsequent explanation of time travel is something quite different to time travel, a version of quantum physics dimensional travel and it annoyed me. Ok you take some suspension of disbelief, it didn’t distract from the point. I just thought it was a bit smug, very busy and tried so hard to avoid the ‘LOTR happy clappy hour long deleted scenes accidentally included in the theatrical release’ ending.

I would have loved a really surreal ending, like recycling iron man into a bridge support or railway track, but so he winces when someone drives a train over his face. Or something.

Yeah the time travel stuff I just ignored, it was so dumb and I hated so much that Tony was just like, yeah figured this out right now, I'm amazed at how amazing I am. I think it would have worked better if he said no and continued to work on it for years and eating away at him until it finally worked, not just a few hours or days. I did like some of the more human moments with Tony which we are rarely treated to. Even with it's bloated run time there were things in the finale I was like wait, is that? why are they here? what ever. I personally never liked Sam/Falcon, nothing he's done in previous films really stood out but he had one really awesome kill with his wings that impressed me and I was like finally that guy did something that justified him being on screen.

It's funny because at times the writing is great, so many great lines being thrown around (I know it's a highly contentious plot point but I loved Thor through out the film) but there are moments where really dumb and useless lines show up and it amazes me that it got through the 40 passes on the script. Like I said it falls right in the middle of Marvel's movies for me, it's not amazing, it's not bad, it's too long and has some great stuff. One thing that does excite after seeing the final moments of the film is where they are going to take Thor.

Lot's of movies for me yesterday.


The Seventh Curse directed by Ngai Choi Lam who also is responsible for bringing us the glorious Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. This on was brought to my attention by a podcast, the film is currently on Amazon Prime in US. It's a gem, I wish I had known about it before, it's ridiculous in all the right ways, fantastic gag effects, a bat shit insane plot and Chow Yun Fat & Maggie Cheung. The basic story for the film is the main character has been blood cursed, he has 7 days to find the Shaman that bewitched him to stop his death. The film is broken into three sections, section 1 which serves as an introduction to the characters plays out like a cop action film, the main character shows the first sign of the curse, section 2 is the back story of how he came to be cursed one year prior in a very Indiana Jones type flashback, followed by section 3 which is tracking down the tribe & shamen for a final showdown. Oh and one last thing I forgot to mention, the shaman just happens to have a Brain Damage/Aylmer thing he throws at people who eats, stabs and rips apart what ever it falls on. I loved this film. If you like absurd gore gag filled Japanese cinema give this a shot.


This is one of those J-horror films I always wanted to see when they were hitting it big in the early to mid 00's but I never found a copy. It just showed up on Shudder recently. It's a great "found footage" film about demon possession. I really enjoyed it even though it's a touch long. I'm not a big fan of found footage but this is definitely one of the best and I will revisit the film again in the future which I can't say for most of the genre.

Not much to say about this one other than I thoroughly enjoyed it, it's extremely self indulgent from a filmmakers standpoint but for a film that moves at a snails pace for it's 160min run time I was fully engaged. The acting is great from every one, I was quite happy to see the one and only Udo Kier show up for a scene. This is not a film for every one but I feel like if you enjoy Zahler's previous films then this one should work for you.
